Zuisenkyo offers the ryokan/onsen experience at a bargain price. 

Beautiful rural location, set in spacious, attractive grounds, with pathways along a wooded gorge.

Traditional tatami/shikibuton rooms, onsen and rutemburo, very friendly staff.

Meals are good, served buffet style in a shared dining room.

Free shuttle to Ichinoseki station and World Heritage Site Hiraizumi. 
Local bus service to nearby Genbikei rapids, and to Mount Kurikoma.

Popular with ordinary working Japanese, and rightly so.

Exceptional Value

Service was great. Food was nothing particularly unique or spectacular, but it was average kaiseki. Very good quality, with no special ingredients to speak of. The best feature is the onsen. The outdoor bath was dramatic in the snow. Rooms are large and very clean. It seems to be well kept-up. No visible wear-and-tear.

Average food, but great room and wonderful hot spring

This onsen hotel is in the middle of nowhere. it's about a 30-minute drive from Ichinoseki train station or the UNESCO World Heritage temples of Hiraizumi. We rented a car, but I think there is a hotel shuttle from the station and maybe even a public bus (I saw a bus stop in the hotel parking lot. The hotel sits at the end of Hondera (formerly Honedera), a valley of rice paddies that once belonged to Chuson-ji temple in Hiraizumi.

The rooms are tatami, sleeping on futon laid out by the staff each evening. They are well-heated with private bath. We had a nice view of the snow-covered landscape (mid-January) and a stream that flows through. Yukata are provided, and you can wear them anywhere in the hotel, as well as to sleep.

The set dinner was served in private dining rooms on the first floor. Ours featured choice cuts of Maezawa beef that we grilled ourselves. Breakfast is buffet-style in a large room on the second floor.

The public bath was big and spacious, and also had a nice, but small outdoor bath (rotenburo). The onsen (hot spring) waters are supposed to be good for your skin.

The hotel was quiet when we were there, but some other reviews note that it can be noisy if a big group comes and has a late-night karaoke party after dinner.

Zuisenkaku is a middle-sized(45 rooms) ryokan, a traditional Japanese accommodation, at the foot of a mountain and about a 30-minute drive to the world heritage-listed area, Hiraizumi.
Complimentary shuttle bus service is available that connects between the ryokan and JR stations of Ichinoseki and Hiraizumi, which requires advanced reservations.
The room I stayed at was so simple with a sink and a bathroom without a shower, not having a nice view from the window, and the area of the room was about 16.5 sq.m. 
So nice for me was an onsen here with open-air spa facilities. Hot spring water is coming directly from  the source without circulation. I got smooth skin after bathing in an onsen here. But I was disappointed that a fence of men's open-air spa spoiled the view of the valley.
The accommodation cost me 10,000 yen plus taxes per night which included fixed Japanese dinner except beverage and buffet breakfast. 
Brochures are written in English about how to bathe in an onsen and use the facilities of the ryokan.
The TV channels are restricted to Japanese programs. Not available to watch English TV programs like BBC nor CNN. 
It could surprise you that the futon is already arranged when you come back to a room after dinner.
Zuisenkaku would be nice for those who like to have an experience of staying at a traditional Japanese onsen ryokan.
