Arriving at Hatsuhana means diving into a world of luxurious relaxation. We had a nice suite with a private onsen on our terrace. Nevertheless we tried one of the spacier private onsen which was spectacular. Booking in advance is recommended.
A maximum of privacy is guaranteed in private dining and breakfast rooms. 
We could not try any treatments because they were already fully booked. 
Communication is a little difficult because only a few staff members speak English.

Beautiful place and experience

Odakyu Hotel Hatsuhana is a luxurious onsen/ryokan that was recently renovated and it showed on its amenities and price tag. We were there in Feb 2023 for 2 nights which included breakfast and 2 kaiseki dinners. The highlights were the large private open-air onsens. It was even more spectacular when it snowed on our last day.

Most travelers will take the Romance Car to Hakone, we took the JR to Odawara Station and rented a car to explore Hakone. The hotel entrance/lobby oozed opulence: luxurious sofas, fire place, bottomless champagne/wine/coffee. We booked the Comfort room for JPY86,300 per night, it was actually the cheapest room here, yikes. Furnishings were new and comfy: lounge chair, HD TV, super comfy queen beds, large bathroom with separate bathing area before you hop into your own private onsen on the balcony, with a view of the majestic green mountain to boot.

There are multiple public baths which we relished, but there are also 4 large private baths that you can RSVP (no additional fee) for 45 min sessions. Akari was nice but our favorite was def the Kawato private bath. It was open-air, quite large, and you are few feet away from the trees and the forest. We went there twice, the 2nd time it snowed heavily and the experience was surreal. Because it's a private bath, you can take all the photos and videos to your heart's content. There are endless supply of beers and milk, you just grab it from the mini fridges, no extra charge. There was a cable car that takes guests from their rooms to different onsen and various floors, so cool. 

For the meals you can choose Western or Japanese Our Japanese BF was good, but the kaiseki dinners were fantastic: wagyu beef, shark fin soup, pasta, sushi, etc. Guests dine in their own private rooms. If you are still thirsty or hungry, the lobby offers 24 hr beer/wine/champagne/coffee, also afternoon snacks and desserts. During our 3-day stay we saw everything: rain, sun and then snow at the end. The snow made it hard to drive but it was spectacular for taking photos and videos

Umtra-luxurious ryokan with public & private onsen & 9-course kaiseki meals

If you pass by the Yumoto station on your way to Hakone, then you must stop by that amazing restaurant and give a try to their incredibly tasty soba! 
The soba noodles are prepared in the pure traditional style, using fine ingredients and clean mountain water. 
The broth is delicate and flavorful and the interior absolutely charming.
This is a must try for an unforgettable experience!

Luxurious place, excellent service.
Please take note this place is not kids friendly: no proper baby chairs, no laundry service, expensive kids breakfast, very slippery floor in the onsen. Quite common in Japan, which is becoming a retirement home the size of a country :(

Very comfortable (not kids friendly)

We stayed as a family for 2 nights in Aug. We drove to Hakone which I highly recommend as the town is quite spread out and Cycling/walking is a challenge as parts of the area are quite steep.

The hotel was located off Highway 1. Very easily accessible for those coming by car. Closest train station is Hakone-yumoto stn. Greetings were personalised and welcoming. Coffee, Japanese tea and snacks were served at a waiting lounge as you check in. You arrive at the lobby on the 6th floor and rooms are below. There is a restaurant at lobby level where breakfast and dinner are served. This is important to note as not (as we later learned) all hotels have a restaurant and in general everything closes by 5 pm! 

We were shown to our room by a tiny earnest staff. The room was a tatami room with beautiful view of the hills. The room was beautiful - touches of gold, well maintained tatami, floor chairs, mood lighting, decor and vanity corner (with Jewelry stand). It was a well thought out room - yukatas for different heights, stool for shoe wearing, complete bathroom with generous amenities, own shower, automated toilet etc. 

Breakfast was amazing and the hand-made tofu was wonderful! The menu changes daily. We didn’t try dinner at the hotel (@yen10k per head) which we regretted as restaurants close early and choice of food is fairly limited to fast food Japanese fare (tonkatsu, tempura etc). Book early and note, it’s impossible to change times. 

The public spas have an external bath which we highly recommend. Do try the 2nd floor onsen (other than the one in the 3rd flr) which is accessible by a funicular car and less crowded. 

For traveling families, note that there is no laundry service at the hotel which is a minus for me as the weather was hot and clothes were generally drenched in sweat by end of day. 

Beautiful & luxurious hotel 

We’ve spent in this hotel for 2 nights. There is only public onsen in this hitel but of course separate male and female. The staffs and service are good. As we’ve tried another onsen as well, could say that this one is the most convenient in Hakone. The breakfast would come in set but many sets.  You could wear Yukata all the time during stay here.

2nd Ryokan in Hakone

This was the highlight of our Japan vacation, we booked a room with a private open air bath facing the forested hill which I strongly recommend so you can enjoy onsen in a very private way. The rooms are spacious and super comfortable, we asked for western beds just in case. Dinner in the room was exquisite, a multi course experience of fine japanese cuisine with superb service. I rarely write such raving reviews but this place was worth every bit

if you must experience a Ryokan this is the place

Hatsuhana has a wonderful onsen, especially for ladies, with two floor options. The outdoor baths are immaculate and fantastically maintained. The evening dinner was delicious and one of the bests I have had at an onsen. Japanese breakfast was also spot on. The only reason not to give five stars was that the entrance and "slope car" was a little old and outdated, but otherwise, a fantastic experience. Rooms were large and comfortable.
  Although my father told me the futon mattress was too thin and uncomfortable.

Wonderful onsen experience

My one daughter's family (they live in Australia) and I spent two nights at this resort.  We enjoyed the room, the food (we purchased the all inclusive package), and of course the onsen experience.  My grandchildren only ate one meal in the dining room--not their cup of tea, and they ended up having room service.   Two nights might have been an overkill.   The dinner menu is 8 courses, beautifully presented, but too much pampering.   Facility is well organized and overall a great experience.
