Definitely not the ordinary type of Japanese hostels, this one is slightly older and with fewer facilities. There is no key for the room I stayed in, Male dorm on the 3rd floor, so the door was left unlocked. There's only one air conditioner in the dorm which was quite sufficient for my side of the room but I heard complaints from my fellow roommates that the temperature was unbearably hot.
However, considering the price they charge and there're only two hostels in Kagoshima, this hostel is value for money to me. At least better than what I expected from reading the reviews!
P.S. The entire building shakes when large vehicles pass through the road in front of the hostel!

Better than what I expect!

The good things about this hostel are that it is very communal. Easy to meet people with some good hang out areas on all floors. The room (shared dorm) was fine. It's in a good location as it is easily reached by tram from the central station (Kagoshima Chūō) and is located on the waterfront just a short walk from the ferry terminal to get to Sakurajima Island and see the volcano on the other side of the bay. The not-so-good-things were the fact that the hostel is located by a very loud main road and that the staff at the hostel are a little bit off. They seem to deal with guests in a way that feels like they are being put to some difficulty by guests which creates a somewhat odd welcome and atmosphere.

The hostel is very near to the Ferry to go to Sakurajima Mt. (10/20 min walking).
10 minutes to connection to the center.
Supermarket 24h is so close from the hostel.

Very good location if you're taking the ferry toYakushima - terminal is just a 10-minute walk away. Also a 10-minute walk to a tram stop connecting with the JR station. Bar/lounge area is very nice and pleasant. Price for the wine was moderate. Wifi worked well. I stayed in two different dorms: the 12-bed mixed dorm (capsules) is quite good and provides decent space for the guests.  

The 12-bed male dorm however (bunk beds) is very cramped (barely any place to put a backpack), was too hot, had a stench of humidity and sweat that made it very unpleasant, and the bunk beds were too shaky. I could barely sleep the night I was there.

Quality of stay depends on the room you get

Obligatory "did not actually stay here," but I believe my experience can still be useful for those wanting to know what they can expect if they should choose to try and book this place.
TAKEAWAY #1: You must get be able to make it there before 10 PM, or else you must take the initiative to contact them the day of to tell them that you will be coming in later.
I booked this place via Hostelworld, put down that I would be getting in around 11 PM or a little earlier since my flight didn't arrive to the nearest (only?) airport until 9:30-ish. My understanding when booking the place was that I would be fine so long as I made it there before midnight, but there was no formal indication anywhere on the website as to what was the latest time I could be there to check in. I finally arrive at 10:20 PM and found that, not only was it was all locked up, but my reservation was already canceled. If I had known that I needed to still contact them the day of, regardless of the information I put down in my reservation, I would have done so when I arrived at the airport, which could have saved me so much of this trouble I had.
TAKEAWAY #2: You must pay any remaining portion of your unpaid booking fee in cash.
Yes, you should carry cash just in case wherever you go in Japan because you might not be able to use any other payment method. However, I have actually found that, at least at the time of writing this in April of 2024, the number of places which don't accept major international credit cards are very few, especially so for hostels and hotels. Given that I encountered some troubles getting some of the cash I was supposed to have during my travels, I would have had to rely on credit card for any outstanding fees that needed to still be paid for my stay here. This, at least, *was* listed on the Hostelworld site, but could be easily missed by not hitting the [More...] button to read the hostel's full About section. Keep in mind that, if you were looking to get the cash necessary for the hostel at the nearby airport by exchanging currencies, they are not 24/7, and when I got there, they were all closed.
TAKEAWAY #3: There are nice hotels very close by on the main road north of this place.

IF YOU BOOK, ARRIVE BEFORE 10PM!

Terrible experience here. Staff were incredibly rude, and almost never at the desk. Rooms were way too small (smaller than pretty much every other spot I've been to in Japan) and the entire place smelled really awful the entire time I was there. Would highly recommend avoiding this spot. 

Very bad

Gross place.. Check in done by stoned guy who rattled off three sentences, shoved a leaflet in my hand when I asked something and then disappeared again. Smelled like smoke everywhere, first hostel in my now five week trip where I had to make my own bed. Nothing around to go eat. Bleh!
