PROS:
1. Great location! Ryokan is about 1.5 km from Kanazawa station, 200 m from Omicho market, and about 2 km from Kenroku-en garden and Kanazawa castle.
2. Spacious comfortable room with a private toilet and wash area, with a booklet telling guests how to properly behave in a ryokan or in an onsen and even makes a brief introduction about the kaiseki meal.
3. The owner was very hospitable and warm
4. Delicious seafood kaiseki dinner and breakfast. 
5. The ryokan's history! It is more than 300 years old and the oldest ryokan in Kanazawa that has been run by the same family.

* Note: we were quite too shy to try the onsen since unlike in other places in which you could use the bath exclusively for your group, this ryokan has common baths segregated by gender, although as far as I know they have a few rooms with private baths.

Awesome! Loved the seafood kaiseki.

If you’re looking for a traditional Ryokan in a fabulous position this is for you. It is close to modern shopping centres, a huge market and eatery area, the old Samurai district and the famous Geisha district. We had a large room with private bath and toilet. At first glance we were a bit shocked. Seem old and a bit tatty with not a lot of ambience. However the owner Mie Sumi brought the whole place to life. What a wonderful lady who could not do enough for us. She speaks good English and is never far away when help is needed. Soon we felt like we were part of her family living in this historic place. We were fortunate enough to have a traditional Japanese dinner for just the 2 of us. Amazing! Breakfast was simple fresh and just right. We did our laundry without any fuss. She organised transport and also had our luggage shipped to Takayama while we had huge day of visiting UNESCO traditional villages and travelling late to our next destination. This was a great effortless experience.

A traditional Ryokan with significant history in the centre of Kanazawa’s action (old and new). Plus a wonderful host.

From the moment we arrived we felt welcome at Sumiyoshiya. Not only is the Ryokan lovely to look at, but the owner and staff are incredibly friendly and the rooms first rate. We had a room in the second floor facing the street, but from 10pm to 7 or 8am it was so quiet you’d barely know it was there. The room was large, light and airy with a separate ante-room and lobby. The futons were comfy and the quilts very cosy. 
We opted for the Japanese breakfasts, which were delicious. Sadly we didn’t arrange in time to be able to have dinner in-house, but it smelt good and, if the breakfasts were anything to go by, would have been great to try.
Sumiyoshiya is perfectly located for exploring Kanazawa - it’s close to Omicho Ichiba market, the castle an Kenroko-en garden, while there are nearby bus stops for the Kanazawa loop bus (the hop-on hop-off service which takes you between sights if you don’t fancy lots of walking). The owner told us of a couple of nearby places to buy passes for this. 
If travelling by car you can stop right outside to drop bags and the ryokan even has a couple of private parking places around the corner (but there are really close paid parking lots if these are full).

Great ryokan foe exploring Kanazawa

When looking to stay in Kanazawa, one would be hard pressed to find a more perfect place than Sumiyoshiya.  The location is great, as it is very close to both the Omi-Cho Market, and the Kanazawa Castle Park.  We spent two nights  at this ryokan and could not have been happier!

Mie Sumi was the consumate hostess!  When asked for extra water in the room, recommendations for a shushi restaurant, arranging for taxis, all was taken care of in a matter of minutes.   She even provided us with the name and location of the where to find the wonderful tea sweets served in our room.

The room (#2) was spacious and immaculate.  The dinner (served in our room) was outstanding!  Crab, grilled fish, sushimi, shrimp, and clear soup with clam were all delicious.  We could not have asked for a more wonderful meal!

While Kanazawa was a bit quiet (mid-June, Tues-Thurs) we found plenty to do around town, and will make a return visit in November.  When we do, we plan to stay at Sumiyoshiya once again.

The perfect ryokan in Kanazawa

We had a wonderful stay at Sumiyoshiya.  The property itself is older but very well taken care of and our room was clean and comfortable.  We booked late and the only room available was one with shared bath.  So that meant we had a toilet in the room but had to go to a shared, single sex bathroom for showers.  There was one open space for showers and a hot bath so it can be slightly comfortable if you're not used to the open concept.  Thankfully I had the whole place to myself on a Tues night and I was able to have some peace and quiet in the hot tub/bath.  The owners were extremely friendly and the entire stay (check-in, check-out, etc) was very pleasant.  But the best part was the kaiseki dinner that was available as an additional option (approx. $50-60/person).  It was a seafood feast featuring all the fresh daily catch from the fish market next door.  It was so delicious and amazing that I'd stay here again just for the dinner!  The location was great; an easy walk from the main station, right next to the famous Omicho Market and a short walk to the Kenrokuen Garden.  I highly recommend Sumiyoshiya for the hospitality and the amazing dinner!

Great hospitality and amazing Kaiseki dinner

My husband, Mum and 7mo baby stayed 3 nights and fell in love with Sumiyoshiya Ryokan. 
Mie Sumi who runs the accomodation was thoughtful and attentive. Rooms are very beautiful, and the Onsen was so relaxing.
We had room type 1,3 and 4 which all had private toilets and bathrooms with type 3 having an actual private bath.
The dinner was a lovely experience enjoyed in our room and the continental breakfast was generous.

Beautiful authentic experience

We stayed for two nights as this ryokan and it was the best choice. First of all, Mie Sumi is the most efficient person to deal with - she always responded to any queries I had on time and accommodated requests as best as she could.
The ryokan is centrally located - very close to the market and the main attractions (the castle, the gardens, Higashi-Chaya). We walked everywhere.
The service is excellent-we had a room with a private shower and toilet the first night but we had to change rooms the next. They took care of everything - from taking your luggage up to the room and getting it ready for sleep. There was always tea and sweets for us when we got in.
Also, on our last night we had dinner at the ryokan and it was the best meal - they are so close to the market so we had the freshest sashimi, fish and tempura.
The place itself was spotless. And when I took a shower at the shared bathroom, it was impeccable. I am so glad we chose this place and would stay there again when I go back. It’s the very best of Japanese hospitality. Mie Sumi also gave us restaurant recommendations, made reservations for us and suggested we reserve our JR train to Tokyo.  No request went unnoticed and they really do their very best to please their guests.


Best place to stay in Kanazawa.

We stayed here as two couples in Rooms 1 & 2 (with private bathroom and toilet) and we cannot say enough good things about it. Mie, the owner, was extremely helpful, informing us in advance about train disruptions due to the typhoon, she booked restaurants for us in advance, organised for our luggage to go to Tokyo in advance, in short she did everything. The rooms were very comfortable and spacious, there was a small sitting area outside our rooms where you could sit of an evening, breakfast was excellent, the location is perfect for all things downtown. We stayed for 4 nights and I was a bit worried that might be too long but not at all - we would have happily stayed another four days. And... the 4 nights cost us less than one night in our Tokyo hotel!!

Delightful

We stayed 2 nights at Sumiyoshiya (11-12 Aug) and it was a completely positive experience.
The ryokan is in a traditional building and you have to remove your shoes before entering in the hall. Our room was clean and well arranged. A thermos with hot green tea was always available in the room. On the first evening we had dinner served in our room and we liked a lot both the food and the way it was presented. Traditional Japanese breakfast was served in the dining room and it was very good as well, and so abundant that we could have just an ice cream for lunch!
We also enjoyed the public bath on both evenings of our stay.
The ryokan is located at 10 minutes’ walk from the castle and 15 minutes from the garden; also the typical food market is very close and worth a visit.
One final word on the landlady, Ms Mie: we greatly appreciated her discrete kindness and availability, as well as her useful recommendations; on the day of our arrival she suggested us to have dinner a bit earlier so that we could enjoy the lighting event that evening at the wonderful Kenrokuen garden, closing at 21:00. Definitely a stunning experience. She also recommended us a nice sushi restaurant for the second evening and she directed us to some shops where we could buy some pottery. Ms Mie speaks a good English which is of help in communication.
In summary, it was a very good experience in a traditional Ryokan and we hope we can visit the Sumiyoshiya again in the future.

Nice traditional ryokan

What a wonderful experience! This was our first time staying in a ryokan and we enjoyed every moment. Owner Mie communicated promptly via email from our first inquiry. Accommodations were spotless and comfortable. We opted for a traditional Kaiseki dinner on our first night. Wow! It was fabulous. For breakfast,  we had a choice of Japanese or Western. We tried both and were pleased both times. The ryokan is located centrally, within easy walking distance to the train station,  the market and other sights. Do yourself a favor and stay at Sumiyoshi Ryokan!
