The staff here was very nice when I walked in and we discovered that they did not get my Booking.com reservation, which I made two days prior to my arrival. The staff does not speak much English, and I don't speak much Japanese, but they were very helpful getting me a room and breakfast. They also honored the Booking.com price. The lobby and halls are fairly worn and grubby, but the rooms are clean and pleasant. You have to keep the door closed between the entryway and the main room to keep the temperature reasonable, as the entry way is hot. The lights all take some time to come on after turning the switch,  and the bathroom lights are very dim. There is the sleeping room with the table and two side dressing/sitting rooms with access to a little patio that looks into the courtyard. The staff lays out your futon for you in the evening and puts it away in the morning. 
Wifi was available in the lobby and in parts of the hallway,  but there was only a very weak and intermittent signal in a single area in my room. 
The baths themselves are nice, but nothing special. They have four hot baths, two on each side. One side is for men and the other for women, then they switch in the evening so that both sexes can experience both sides. One side has an indoor pool with strong jets, and outdoor rock pool, and a sauna. The other side has two rock pools, one outdoors and one indoors.
Breakfast was 1,000 JPY and it was worth it! There were so many options in the buffet and what they set out on the table. Don't expect anything an American would consider breakfast--with the exception of boiled eggs. 

I made this reservation without looking too much into the location. It seemed like a good idea to stay here then go see Shosenkyo Gorge. The experience was rather nice, but I think I would have preferred going to a normal onsen in Isawa or even the onsen in Kofu that is on the bus route to the gorge. In my experience, the normal onsens have much more variation in the types of pools. 
If you are walking here, the location shown on the trip advisor map is incorrect. I stumbled upon the actual location while I was dejectedly walking back to the train station after the location was wrong and nobody on the street could direct me to it. There is an onsen mural at the turn and I saw that "柳"matched the name on my confirmation. Either search your map for "柳屋" in Kofu (it is listed as a hotel under that band on Google Maps), or search for the coordinates "35.683528 138.54757" and you'll find it. Searching for the address (3 Chome-16-16-2 Yumura, Kōfu-shi, Yamanashi-ken 400-0073) in Google Maps will pinpoint a different building across the canal. 

Old but not bad

I booked only 1 night here through Japanican. This is an automated booking engine so despite having a receipt I felt a bit nervous about not having made contact with a real person - but no probs - the hotel was readily expecting us.
Yumura Spa is about 10 mins in a taxi (700Y ish) from Kofu JR station and is a little area of many onsen. People do don their yukatas and wooden sandles and walk around from bath to bath. there is also a short walk to through the nearby hills past ancient burial sites and shrines. Yamanashi prefecture is famous for the onsen, wine growing, crystals and senshokyo gorge (which is why we went.)
The hotel has a couple of staff with reasonable english - most have none - but it is not really a problem. A large tatami room with a main table/futon area, and a small table with hole under the table and a small sitting area and an outdoor terrace looking over the garden. There is a full mini bar, A/C, private bathroom and toilet, yukatas and slippers - and fun touches like they hang a wooden panel with your name written in Japanese on your door. 
this is a fairly modern ryokan, spotlessly clean and in immaculate condition. standard toiletries are supplied. they have a women's and men's onsen area - both have indoor and outdoor baths with saunas and showers. these were quite busy and I got to chatting with the other women in the outdoor bath - although my husband said all the men were very silent and serious.
Meals were HUGE - course after course kept coming for breakfast and dinner - cold stuff including big pieces of sashimi, pickles, salmon etc all looking a million bucks! Hot pot with mushroom and tofu, tempura veges, rice balls, meat balls, rice, miso, grilled fish, sesame jelly for dessert - so much food I couldn't eat it all. Dinner was served in the room and breakfast in a main dining room - this was partially laid out and also a buffet available - usual pickles, tofu, miso, rice, smoked fish, mushrooms, small pieces of eggy things and fishy things and hot dishes of rice and mushies, noodles etc - even a jelly fish dish.  Another beautiful garden and a nice souvenir shop. 
We stayed here to visit the gorge which is popular - not overly crowded for a long weekend - and very beautiful. We accidently took the wrong the bus that took us to the top of the gorge and then walked downhill all the way - against the crowd - the main tourist route seems to be to walk uphill - but why?
This ryokan is great for an easy traditional japanese experience with a great onsen.
