Wakatake Ryokan is one of the few traditional Japanese-style accommodations in the easy-going and friendly seaside town of Kushiro. We were delighted to find this option on a quiet street within an easy 10-minute walk of the station (via the underpass between the train and bus terminals), although some business travelers or western tourists uncomfortable with ryokans or guest houses (minshuku) might opt for one of the city's high-rise hotels. 

Wakatake Ryokan's owners are carrying on a family business started 70 years ago, and the hostess' hospitality and attention to detail reflects many decades of experience welcoming guests from Japan and abroad. Sleeping rooms are simple but comfortable and fully equipped, with shared WC down the hall and a shared bathroom / shower on the main floor. We were able to access these without delay at all times even though most of the rooms were occupied. 

The hostess speaks some English and has English-language printed materials on hand highlighting attractions in and around Kushiro as well local restaurants within reasonable walking distance. The Washo public market is a couple minutes walk past the station, to the west, and the waterfront, fishing fleet, and Nusamai Bridge are a pleasant 15 minute stroll further south, if you don't stop to window shop or eat.

Guests may use the ryokan's on-site washing machine and dryer for a modest price to catch up on laundry, which came in handy as we were near the end of our three weeks in Japan. The very reasonable standard room rate includes a western-style breakfast, and for an additional fee, a Japanese breakfast is available - but we did not have an opportunity to sample this.

We would happily stay here again.

Welcoming Japanese-style accomodation in Kushiro

Stayed here for one night. Host was very kind and helpful, she can speak a little English which can help with the check in. 

Rooms are traditional style, which you can see from the photo. Disposable toothbrush and toothpaste, towels and even pajamas are provided. She also has a folder with some food recommendations around the area.

If you're heading there from Kushiro station, take the underpass instead of taking the overhead bridge. It'll take 7 mins from the ryokan to the station via the underpass. 


Nice little homestay 

Nice little place about 10 minutes walk from the railway station. Owners are friendly and helpful and done up a booklet with some local restaurant recommendations in the area. Bedding is done in the traditional Japanese style and all basic facilities are here. 

Holiday. 

We stayed in this lovely Ryokan for three nights.  Yoko-San was the perfect host and made us feel welcome throughout.  The room was genuine Japanese tatami mats etc.  She made us lovely breakfasts although these were not really included in the booking. She also offered us little stools on which to sit for breakfast, realising that we were unused to sitting cross-legged. The shared facilities were more than adequate and although the ryokan was full every night we never had to wait to use them. Lovely deep bath! 
The Ryokan is in a quiet area, a 10 minute walk north of the station.  If you are walking you need to take the pedestrian subway at the east end of the station to get across the tracks, then head north away from the the railway.  The tourist office in the station knew it well and were helpful in pointing us in the right direction.
Yoko-San was very helpful in suggesting a variety of local restaurants, all of which were really good.  She also helped us plan a trip to an Onsen in Obihiro, writing elaborately illustrated instructions in English. There are some standard business hotels near the railway station but if want the real thing then Wakatake is it!  I would certainly stay there again.

A Gem in Kushiro

I stayed with 3 friends in this lovely little ryokan for 2 nights, the 4 of us where coming from 3 long days of cycling in the South East of Hokkaido, and we were really exhausted. The lovely host immediately made us feel like home, she let us put our 4 bicycles inside the ryokan in spite of the limited space available at the entrance, she immediately offered us free coffee and tea, and she gave us loads of very useful advices on what to do / where to eat in the area. And she also gave us a very nice handmade (by her!) gift! 

The rooms are Japanese style and big enough for 2 people, there is a nice lounge / dining area, toilets and bathrooms are shared as in most accommodations of this kind.

Just a few minutes walk to the train station, and 200 meters to the bus stop of the limousine bus to the airport. 

Overall a great experience, this little ryokan and its lovely host are exactly the type of experience that especially tourists from overseas want to have (well, actually that's true also for foreigners living in Japan for several years like me!). The host speaks some English and communication in general is not an issue.

Strongly recommended and I can't wait to go again!
