Discovered this place on Tripadvisor- looked very affordable and cheap ryokan compared to other places. I loved this place, if you're looking for "normal day to day Japanese" and wondering what it would be like back in the old days to stay here. 

The house is run by a super friendly and curious elderly Japanese man in his 80's of age. He is very sprightly and carried our heavy luggage when we had them shuttled from Tokyo. 

The place itself is kind of barebones. Very large room. Mattress futon is comfortable enough. Only issue would be the bathroom which is a bit old and takes 6 minutes for the hot water to come on. Very centrally located in Gion. No wifi, very old TV obviously. 

Otherwise very clean and authentic-old. I wouldn't book here for high end luxury, but if you are into character, history, and genuine friendliness and local interactions, I would book here.

Very olden-day traditional house. Authentic experience.

We only spent one night here, but we wish we had spent more!  This Ryokan feels really traditional and authentic in it's aesthetics and atmosphere.  The owner is a very lovely man who makes great effort.  He speaks little English and we speak little Japanese but you could really sense the warmth.  On arrival my name was in English on the shoe rack which had slippers on a big label which had been had-written in black ink- it was nice to know we had arrived at the right place!

We were very lucky during our stay and we were the only people on our floor! (I think there may have only been one other couple staying at the time on another floor  going by the shoe rack but, we never saw them).  I believe that we were upgraded because of this although the owner didn't mention that.  We had our own shower room and a lovely big room even though we only paid for shared showers. There is a shared "public" bath indoors that we could use anytime - although that might not be the case if  there were more guests staying at the time.

The wifi did not work in the room, however we only needed our phone at the beginning of the day to look up the routes of where we were going and it worked just outside our room in the corridor next to the shared shower/sink facilities so that was fine .  If you are a person who needs wifi all the time/in the room I would ask to make sure that your room is OK for it.

We didn't realise in advance that we could smoke in the room .  Being smokers we were happily surprised that there was a  sitting area with windows on one side and sliding doors and the other.  This way, you could open the windows to smoke whilst largely protecting the area that you are sleeping in from smoke.  This section also had a large bottle fridge, which was great for our beers!

We went out to explore and had ramen for dinner (I don't think they do any food at this particular Ryokan, but this wasn't a problem for us). Location is excellent for exploring the main sights, it's near the Kamo River and lots of restaurants. We then came back to relax, have a bath and we had such a nice evening with some beers.

Overall, I think it was very good value for money.  Particularly compared to other Ryokans (we did stay in one that was not so nice in atmosphere).

What a great first day and night in Kyoto, it was so relaxing and we would definitely come back - thank you! x

Authentic

A very nice experience. We liked the traditional Japanese ryokan style with tatami mats, the location  (walking distance from some of the major temples and the geisha district) and the very helpful host.

A great ryokan in an excellent location

We stayed here for three nights and used it as our base for exploring kyoto. We had a large room with Tatami mats, and a screen with seats and an en-suite behind it. The en-suite was chilly in March, but that's the only negative thing I can say about the place.

The owner is a fantastically friendly gent who couldn't have gone any more out of his way to make sure my girlfriend and I felt at home. Everything from carrying out (heavy!) bags, to showing us the onsen bath downstairs and letting us use a private room within wifi range one evening. 

The onsen bath was a delight - wash yourself off with the shower and soap before dipping in. 

The room itself is beautifully traditional, and we got some seriously good nights sleep on the futons on the floor. There's a heated mat under them, so you can stay snug all night, only to be woken by the morning light glowing through the paper screen. Couldn't have picked a nicer place to stay!



Amazing night's sleep and friendly host

My husband and I would like to try living in a Japanese house. We decided to choose ryokan Okuda in a very last minute. Beside its great location, we like it because the pics gave us more rustic and traditional feel :) Well it was a bit hard to find the ryokan luckily I know a bit of hiragana and notice the ryokan board in the front. Anyway it is located very close to the entrance to Kenninji Shrine, and the parallel road is Hanamikoji Dori st which is famous for its cute street decoration and geisha. 

This Ryokan is actually very big and our room is spacious. Each of us got our yukata and futon which is nice. The owner was very kind and lovely he gave me lots of grean tea leaves after I said 'suki suki ocha'. He knows a bit of English so prepare to dance and give body language. And he gave us breakfast for free, the warm bread was so yummy. If you want a very traditional house and don't have problem with the smell of incense then Ryokan Okuda is nice choice.

Sophisticated traditional ryokan

Warmly welcomed by the female owner and although she doesn't know how to speak English but she manage to show us what to do in the Ryokan patiently. It is located just opposite Kyoto hospital. So you have to bear with the siren in the midnight :) the room is tatami style, so bear with the noise of the next door if they laughed/ talked. tu kata is prepared for all guests. So you are given a chance to wear and take a picture with it :) Shower time is restricted, you have to bath by 9pm and back to Ryokan by 10pm. Before we left, the female owner has given us a small gift as omiyage. Thanks :)
