The owner spoke excellent English. The inn was quiet and our room was clean and spacious.The air conditioning worked very well.We had no problems with the shared bathroom, it was not over occupied and was very clean. The bedding was comfortable and I got the best sleep I had in Japan.

The inn is a little tricky to locate, but if you get a bus to the shopping district (Kawaramachi on Shijo-dori) and turn right at the street with the Starbucks on the corner, it's one block down and on your left.

The Inn is well located but felt secluded from the hustle and bustle of the city. The only problem was carrying luggage for those staying upstairs, as the stairs are very steep. The mens bath (fits one person comfortably) was hot and there are showers as well. There is a lovely little garden in the centre of the Inn. Breakfast is extra but was very tasty and filling. Highly recommended for those after a traditional experience without the exorbitant cost of some places.

Lovely friendly Inn close to shopping and Gion

We had a lovely stay at Inn Kawashima. It's exactly what we hoped for; a traditional Japanese ryokan, but cheaper than the super high end ones. It has a sweet little (tiny!!) garden, sliding screen doors, tatami mats, futon, the works! Our gracious host even brought us 'western' pillows when we asked. The shared bathroom is traditional Japanese sento style. You can opt to have breakfast brought to you in your room, which was delicious and a real treat to sit at our little tea table. For large westerners unused to futon and creaky sliding doors etc it wasn't the best nights sleep; for those with similar qualms I would suggest warm pyjamas, an eye mask and ear plugs! It really was a wonderful experience, would highly recommend. The owner speaks excellent English, having lived in London for years. It's in a great location too, right near nishiki market down a quiet back street. 

Wonderful ryokan on a budget

I'm going back to the previous comments: the ryokan is extremely well placed, very well maintained, and very charming. Now it's a bit rustic for the price I paid at night (70€), especially in the common sanitary sector.

This ryokan is well maintained, clean, it didn't smell as much of moisture as the others we've made, and it's common in a ryokan (tatami, wall type, etc.) and it's very well located.

We stayed in the second floor Japanese room. It was spacious room that was very quiet. The hosts were helpful and spoke great English. We did not order breakfast or dinner here, but great bar across the street. We were nervous about the shared bathroom but we rarely saw anyone! The location was near Gion and shijo street. Highly recommend! 

Great location, friendly staff

Spent one night there with a friend. The essentials you need are all there. Owner speaks fluent English and is very professional. The bed was really comfortable and I slept soundly till the next morning. The breakfast was simple but delicious. Although I did not stay for long, the environment had a really homely feel to it. In addition, the price is reasonable. It's worth trying out this place for anyone looking for a short stay in Kyoto and on a budget.

Japanese-style hotel. Pretty spacious room with floor furniture (lower table, chair, storage furniture, futon). Pretty comfortable but preferably for a classic bed. Bathroom and toilet to share. Good Japanese breakfast. TV with Japanese channels. Wifi available in the room. Noisy street-side room. Good location not far from Shijo Metro Station (Karasuma Line), near shops and Nishiki market.

Nice location in Kyoto

My wife and I stayed at the Kawashima Inn for one night, it was an unforgettable experience. The ryokan is in a great location, a 5-minute walk from the bus stops and a short walk from Gion. The environment you'd expect, with spacious stylish rooms, pretty clean common bathrooms, breathing the air of ancient Japan. Our accommodation was on the ground floor, facing a beautiful Zen garden. Great quiet, you sleep really well. With about 19,000 yen you can experience the pleasant experience of sleeping in a beautiful ryokan without leaving a fortune.

What a wonderful experience.

If what you are looking for is a typical ryokan then this is the place you need! Even though the rooms are a bit expensive despite the common bathroom and bathroom, everything is clean, very traditional and well maintained. The location is very convenient: 2 metro stations from Kyoto Station, but we had trouble finding the hotel the first time. We were able to leave our very congested suitcases there even after returning our room. The very small indoor garden is very cute and you can request the room giving it to the reservation (the staff responds in English and quickly to mail requests).
