My wife and I, recently had occasion to spend five days, of our ten-day visit to Japan, in Kyoto. 

My nephew, a long term resident of Tokyo, booked us into the Tougetsu Hotel, a traditional ryokan in the heart of Kyoto, and we could not have been more pleased.

We found this 100 year old plus property, iconic and alluring. Our seven tatami room - with a separate sitting room - both surrounded by traditional shoji screen doors, was exceptionally inviting and comfortable. The facilities included air conditioning, a large traditional Japanese bath and a separate shower area...and daily free laundry service . The (all woman) owners/operators/staff, were attentive, accommodating, spoke English reasonably well, and offered a level of customer service that I have not often experienced - anywhere. 

The Tougetsu is centrally located, and the perfect respite from dozens of must see attractions in Kyoto, within walking distance.

We both highly recommend this exceptional and peacefully quiet and comfortable accommodation, in the very heart of one of the most impressive and photographed cities in the world - both for good reason.

An Exceptional Traditional Ryokan

This Ryokan, run by two old but fit Japanese sisters, is for you if you want to experience a traditional Ryokan. It's a very old building made out of mostly wood, everything squeaks and you hear every voice and footstep in the building.

The sisters are extremely service oriented. They will make sure you have everything you need. They talk enough English to make you understand how it all works, will bring green tea and cake in your room and will do your laundry for free (big bonus). They even rearrange your slippers when you are taking a bath so you can slip right into them. 

All in all an interesting experience, suited for those who don't mind and old(fashioned) real stay in Kyoto.

A traditional experience

This ryokan is really old fashion. The owners are even older. The rooms are ok and the location is fine. Make sure you rent a bike in Kyoto.

It is hard to find and the prices are quit high (also at that time the yen/euro rate was horrible). 

The place is ok, but you can probably find better.

Average ryokan with a central location

Overall I was a little disappointed with this ryokan.  It's fairly conveniently located near the Imperial Palace and walking distance to the subway although there's no english sign so it's a little hard to find in the back streets of Kyoto late in the evening. The owner was pleasant and speaks a little english.   The room was fairly large with access to a small garden. Also had a TV and small table/seating area.  Green tea and bun provided on arrival.  However, the paint and plaster is peeling in many areas and overall it looks like it needs a bit of maintenance. After 12 hours of sightseeing in Kyoto I was looking forward to soaking in a typical Japanese bath in the evening but was told I couldn't (no reason given). Showers are only permitted in the morning from 7am to 9am. It was fairly noisy after 7am and when I finally checked out and presented my credit card I was told they only accept cash (for a $148 single night charge).  I had to waste my time walking around trying to find an ATM on Sunday morning and then come all the way back to pay them.  And on top of this I was charged more than quoted online (no reason given).  I've stayed in cheaper, better maintained ryokans so can't recommend this.
