Our family of four visited this guest house in Kyoto for four nights. The house is over 100 years old and has been lovingly restored by Aki and Yuki, the hosts. Bedrooms are tatami rooms with futons. There are beautiful small bathrooms and showers. Hardwood flooring and a shared kitchen. Complimentary tea and coffee is welcome after a long day of wandering. Aki was very helpful, recommending great restaurants and sights. Small touches made our stay special; fresh flowers in the house, making bento boxes with the kids for breakfast. Guest House Kobako is also a great spot for singles or couples; it's very economical. The location is close to many great sights, temples, restaurants. There are bikes for rent as well, recommended. We have been travelling for over ten months and this is the best accommodation we have stayed in. 

Amazing Traditional Japanese accommodation at a great price

The hosts were ery friendly and they speak English quite well. The house is a bit old but has a very traditional feel and provides clrean sheets, towels, and a kitchen for preparing meals. Definitely a place I would come back to.

The staff here were amazing and very friendly. They couldn't speak English well but they tried to help you feel comfortable. For the price it had great accommodations and was justjn a quaint neighborhood and made you feel like you moved into the Kyoto rather than just visiting. Close to several temples but bit of a walk to the more famous places, recommend renting a bike which was only 250 yen for 12 hrs at the guesthouse. Has a traditional Japanese house feel and would love to go back.

Quaint and welcoming guesthouse

Where to start from?  The staff was untrained, didn't speak English and wouldn't follow up on my requests, even though we stayed for three days.  I paid extra for triple room (like 5 times their going rate when out of season) and we were placed in a double room that looked nothing like the pictures, no windows and no patio, facing the faucets area.  When I complained, the staff put up the most passive aggressive behavior I have ever seen.  Calling booking.com didn't help as well, the Japanese speaking representative ended up chatting endlessly with no resolution, even siding with the attendant.  They didn't offer to move us to the bigger rooms featured on their profile, even though guests were moving out every day.  They didn't want to make room in the closet and move out the cleaning brooms and other broken crap they kept there instead of leaving it empty for guest to put their luggage inside.  Even talking on the phone to the owner didn't help.  Most of the time the hostel wasn't attended and we couldn't properly check out not arrange to leave our luggage at the hostel, the phone was turned off and our texts weren't answered.  We were so stressed out about this and spent the entire day in Kyoto with the hope to be able to make sure our payment went through and there are no issues instead of moving on to Nara.  I had a feeling from other reviews that this was not the best choice, and got the worst experience ever.  It is not a good compromise and please avoid at all cost.

Self service kind of place, total lack of management or communication

I really enjoyed staying here, even though it was only one night, the concierge was very helpful trying to help me find my way. The room is nice, super clean and pretty big. As it's a Japanese style room don't expect to much in it. It's also right next to one of the shrines which is fantastic. Would definitely come here again
