The staff was extremely rude! When I arrived at 8 am and dropped my bag, the guy gave me the key and showed me around and also told me that I can't use the room until 4 pm which is the check in time. I understood that part, then i asked politely if i can use the washroom to get change and freshen up before i head out. He then completely over-reacted and said,"what don't you understand about what I just told you, I just told you the check-in time is 4 pm! You can't use the washroom now! This is NOT your country, and in Japan you have rules to follow!" He had a go at me and was telling me off repeatedly about how and why I don't follow the rules. I thought this was completely unnecessary and he was being very RUDE! He made it clear I cant use the bedroom until after check in which is fair, but he didnt say anything about the washroom, and I politely asked him if I can, and this was the reaction I got! The plus sides is that the female staff on the other hand was nice and friendly. The location is great, it is within walking distance from the main shopping street. Lots of small shops and places to eat around it.

Very rude staff

First, the good: this guesthouse is historic and has been beautifully maintained.  Tatami mats are throughout, there are both traditional and Western-style rooms, and the character of the house has been maintained. It is on the edge of the more tourist-friendly part of town. It is affordable, and is managed by an affable young man.
I think our experience was complicated by a number of unfortunate events. First, you can't drop your bags off between 11:00 AM and check in time, and our train came in just after 11, so we were stuck toting bags around all day.  Second, our reservation was lost. The host was still able to accommodate us, and we stayed in one room the first night and one room the second, but it wasn't, unfortunately, what we had planned for.  The guesthouse is perfectly nice, but is definitely more hostel than guesthouse, which is fine, just not something that we were clear on.  That said, our room the second night, a traditional room on the ground floor across from the courtyard, was wonderful.

Quaint but Complicated

Stayed in the female dorm for 7 nights. The dorm was not very spacious and a bit dark but the hostel was of a traditional Japanese house. Great atmosphere, easy to talk to other people and the hostel owner was friendly and welcoming.

Unique experience 

Taiko-ya is a small Hostel with only 3 rooms(two japanese Style, one with a normal bed) and an only-women-dormotory. There is a little garden where you can smoke. Everything is quite small. All guests share one bathroom. If you don't sleep in the dorm, you can take a hot bath in a nice wooden bathtub. They have closing hours from 12 to 4 in the afternoon, but it's no problem to come back late at night, because you get a key.There is also a livingroom, where you can sit together with other guests.
It's easy to find (Rokkaku-dori !!!) and about 8 min from the Subway Station "Karasuma-Oike" and there is a pharmacy and convenient stores nearby.I highly recommend this Hostel!

Beautifull, small and authentic

Went to this guest house at the end of 2013 with my girlfriend and i have to say...one of the best guest houses i've been in! Relatively clean, a lot of facilities to use, and Yu-san (the 'inn-keeper') was great help and lots of fun.

The place is basically a very traditional, old-style Japanese house. You have the wooden beamed roof and sliding doors equipped with a high tech pad-lock and key. A kitchen that you are very welcome to use. There are toilets and a shower. Even the possibility of taking a bath in a quaint Japanese pressed Cyprus wood bath tub looking out onto a small sectioned of stone garden. They also have free Wi-fi. If you go in winter, fear not! They have a Kotatsu in the living room, as well as a heater that they turn on if it gets cold.

In my mind, there were only a few things that i thought were a little dis-likable, and only one of those that might actually be irksome to people.
Firstly, Due to taiko-ya being kept very traditional (and also because it was renovated) the rooms are separated by a thin wall that has a gap when it comes to the roof. As such, there's not much privacy when it comes to noise and oppositely, it may get a bit loud at night if there are a lot of people.
Secondly, THE STAIRS, for those of you who have been in a japanese house before you might know of these, for others, imagine a steep attic staircase. EXCEPT, it leads to the second floor. I didn't mind it too much but it makes for a few slips and falls.
LASTLY, The toilets are in the main walk-way with only one in a futher off corner. Personally, just my own problem with going to the toilet when you know others might hear you doing your business. MY solution was to just go to the further off one! (It was the nicer toilet anyway)

Overall! An amazing little jewel very fitting of Kyoto. In a good location, in the midst of a lot of alleyway snacks and shops, whilst also close (5-8min walk) to many forms of public transport. Yu-san is very helpful and happy to answer any questions and also speaks english. Definitely give this place a go and you won't regret it!

PS. IF YOUR ARRIVING IN THE AFTERNOON GO AFTER....4 (i think)! They close for cleaning in the late afternoon and no one is in until then so you can't check-in. Afterwards, you get a door combination to get in.
