Located just close enough and just far enough from the centre of Dogo Onsen. Don't worry about the road as the rooms face the park at the rear. The staff are friendly, helpful and elegant. The food is excellent and an experience. You'll want to eat-in every night. The two onsen are good and not so good, but swapped at mid-day so that's ok. Room excellent

Outstanding ryokan, excellent location

Umenoya(うめのや) is a small ryokan with only eight rooms and a small garden. Its location is convenient and the two major attractions, Dogo Onsen Honkan (道後温泉本館)and Dogo Onsen Bekkan Asuka no Yu(飛鳥乃湯泉), are within 10 minutes walking distance.

The size of our room, with eight tatamis plus an antechamber, was modest. There was no bathroom inside this simple and quiet room. The decor of this ryokan was plain but graceful. I would just rate the accommodation aspect of Umenoya as above average compared with the other Japanese Ryokans which I had stayed in.

However, this small-scale ryokan proved superior to the other Ryokans in many other aspects.

First, the hostesses were very attentive, and they embodied the hospitality of the traditional Japanese Ryokan. The days we stayed in Umenoya were right before the serious typhoon coming (Unfortunately, this storm damaged Ehime Ken heavily after we left), and there was heavy rain in the morning. When we were going outside, the hostess rushed to the front door and turned the umbrellas to us. Also, they could use English for simple conversation.
 
Second, their gourmet was compelling and comparable with the meals of any high-end ryokans I had visited. The major ingredients were the seafood from the Seto Naikai and the local Iyo beef. The way the chef presents the dishes were amazing, delicious and visually pleasurable. I was satisfied with the ten-course feast except for the fried fish which I did not appreciate.

When I was planning the itinerary, I found some ryokans and hotels in Dogo area larger and more famous than Umenoya. I was lucky for choosing this small gem at a reasonable price. I highly recommend Umenoya .

うめのや是一家只有八間房間和一個小庭園的小旅館。地點很便利，離後温泉主要景點，道後温泉本館與飛鳥乃湯泉，走路十分鐘內皆可到。

我們的房間八疊加控えの間，房間不算大，也沒有浴室，布置簡單。整個旅館的裝璜都是簡單但風格優雅。就整個住宿環境而言，它在我住過的日式旅館中只能算中上，並沒有太突出之處。

不過，這家小旅館卻有我住過的許多旅館所沒有的優點。

首先，服務都非常親切周到，展現了傳統日式旅館的好客精神。我們去那兩天是大颱風來臨前夕（很不幸，這個颱風後來對嬡媛地區帶來很大災害），雨不小。出門前主人都會主動拿雨傘給我們。他們的英文也都可以進行簡單的溝通沒有障礙。

更重要的是他們的美食，完全不輸給我住過的高級日式旅館。食材以瀨戶內海的海鮮為主加上地產伊予牛，料理方式令我驚艷，既美味而且具有視覺美感。十道菜的豐盛晚餐中除了揚物那道魚我沒有特別欣賞之外，其他都讓我非常滿足。

道後有幾家旅館或飯店比うめのや規模大而且名氣大，但我們很慶幸選了這家精緻、價格合理的小旅館。高度推薦。

A Small Gem at a Reasonable Price

I stayed there 2 nights with kaiseki meals included. It is close to the dogo onsen station with 5 minutes walk. This place is very quiet and I couldn't hear any human sound from my room. Since this is a small ryokan with 8 rooms or so, I didn't meet any person at public bath. I was all alone every time. Kaiseki meal is delicious. I wouldn't say it is the best keiseki, but price-performance is high enough. If you want to experience ryokan for the first time without stress, the friendly staff are here. This is not a ryokan in the middle of city and they do not speak fluent english, but no problem on communicating. I will stay at this place again.

Very nice ryokan with friendly staff at convenient location

From the moment you enter this place, you enter serenity. No rushing, I didn't even ask for wifi it seemed wrong. The shady lit corners with trickling water, the Japanese garden, the view over the moat to the cherry blossom. The pouring rain added to the ambience, dripping from the bamboo. The rain cleared and we climbed the neighboring hill to survey the distance as a Shogun would have done in the Middle Ages. The hot bath outside is a special delight and if it is the Man Bath in the evening then it is Woman Bath in the morning. The indoor one is nice too. The walk to Dogo Onsen is minutes away with some delightful restaurants. We think we had breakfast booked but we missed it. Sleep and bathing were more important. A little local cafe/shop has a delightful Breakfast. 

A delightful Japanese experience in a lovely place

If you are looking for a classic Japanese ryokan, you have come to the right place. Beautiful rooms with a great view over the park, friendly staff and fantastic food. We had a wonderful stay in this little, peaceful ryokan and we highly recommend it!
