We weren’t very impressed with the City Hotel in Matsuyama. We were forced to stay there as we couldn’t find vacancy anywhere else due to some unspecified “big event” that was taking place in the city that day. We felt it was very overpriced and that there was a lack of attention to cleanliness. Needless to say we won’t be staying there again and won’t be recommending it to others.

The location of the hotel is very good, only about 5 min walk from the train station and from the nearby moat and castle parklands. The moat and castle is a great place for a morning run or just walking and exploring, with miles of pathways along the moat and up and down the forested hill. There is no shortage of great eateries and shops in the immediate area, so the location of the hotel is a real strong point.

The room was large and relatively nice, Japanese style with futon bed and minimal furnishings, however there was a bad smell that seemed to permeate the room. The micro-bathroom was, well, tiny. But the hot water was great, as was the heated toilet seat. The cleanliness was satisfactory but we didn’t like how the windows couldn’t be opened without removing the paper shutters. In fact, the windows were locked and we had to get the staff to come up to unlock our windows with their key – a definite safety issue! The hotel backs onto the train tracks which we thought would be an issue, but the room was so well sound insulated that we didn’t even notice them go by in the night.

Early in the morning, we went out for a run and when we returned there was a fresh pile of vomit splattered across the floor and wall in front of the elevator, the remains of someone’s seafood dinner. The smell was vile and we had to hold our breath whenever we walked into the hallway to avoid retching. I immediately reported it to the hotel staff and their response was just to throw some newspaper over it and pretend like it wasn’t there. The smell didn’t go away and we had to suffer the stench every time we went out into the hall or used the elevator.

The staff at reception were nice enough and had basic English skills, however they just weren’t up to the standards we had grown used to in Japanese hotels. At a price of  about $135 for a double room, we felt it represented poor value compared to the other places we stayed in Japan. In addition, we had to pay an additional $11 for car parking in the hotel’s own parking lot! We don’t recommend this hotel to other travelers and we definitely wouldn’t stay here again.
