Stayed for 3 nights, in Tsuribana room with private onsen. The room is a traditional tatami room, by the fast flowing river. The entrance to the room is a kitchenette with fridge, sink and tea-making facilities, then on the left is the tatami room with cupboards and a safe, and sliding onto a balcony looking straight onto the river, and on the right is the toilet and sink, then beyond is the onsen with the usual shower and the bath itself. You can sit in the bath and gaze out onto the trees with the sounds of the river and the birds - it sounds heavenly, and it is!  The road is the other side of the river, but you don't notice it as it's hidden in the trees and a way above the Ryokan. Plus the sounds of the river drown out any traffic noise. 
Such a beautiful place to stay! This was our third week out of a four week tour of Japan, and a rest period. We stayed in plenty of ryokan, but none quite like this. The gardens, all with streams running through, weave through the buildings of the ryokan so that the whole thing feels absorbed in nature. Not much english was spoken, but just enough to go with our japanese, and the staff were so helpful and friendly, always there when needed. There was a little lounge and firepit by the reception where you could get tea or coffee at any time, and a little fridge where you coud buy the amazing local yogurt. There are lots of walks straight from the Ryokan, plus Mt. Aso and other activities within a short drive. Wed had a hire car but barely used it.
So, onto the food: We had breakfast and dinner included. Without exception, every single thing we were served wa beautifully presented, delicious and an adventure!

Traditional, perfect, ryokan

an amazing ryokan into the nature. surrounded by forest and a river you taste a jump into the past. wonderful private and pubblic onsen. very tasty kaiseki dinner. A special thanks to staff all, that welcome you in a warm embrace. Thanks again!

Perfect 

Beautiful quiet location in the woods. Excellent onsens including privately bookable ones for the shy. We had a room with its own stone bath onsen which was fabulous. The service was very hospitable and warm. The multi course Japanese meals and breakfasts were quite bland for western tastes, but beautifully presented and complex.
Was pretty good value for money.
Would recommend having a car to get here and see surrounding area.

Beautiful peaceful Ryokan with choice of wonderful onsen.

Sanga Onsen is an extremely special place. The 4th stop on our 3 week trip to Japan and after lots of cities this is just the relaxation we needed. I rarely write reviews but this stand out Onsen deserves a raving review! Not only is the hotel beautifully kept with traditional Japanese charm and design, but the staff and extra details really go above and beyond. The food has been a real stand out point for us. It is exceptional. The presentation is beautiful and the variety of delicious course style menus we had across our 3 day stay is some thing we will never forget. The other small details we loved include the beautifully created gift shop selling local products, the delicious afternoon sweets delivered to our room to enjoy, the wooden tags marked with your room name given to you at the start of your stay ensure you know which indoor shoes provided to you at the start are yours! 
I must also say how incredible all of the staff have been. Nothing is too much of an ask and they were flexible with anything we needed whether it be a small menu change or an extra pillow or 2. 
Also make sure to check out Kurokawa Onsen Town. There are some lovely shops, bakeries and restaurants. 
Overall we have loved every second of our stay and really hope to be back one day. 

An incredibly special place

We began our tour of Japan here and it was a serene, renewing way to recover from jet lap.  The outdoor pools are just beautiful in their landscaping.  Our room was large and comfortable and had its own hot bath.  The staff could not have been more welcoming and accommodating.  The food was beautifully prepared and very interesting for someone new to Japan.  Could not recommend more highly.

Truly beautiful onsen

今まで訪ねた旅館の中でも上位レベルの旅館でした。全てのバランスが良く、スタッフの対応、部屋の清潔感、料理、温泉等々　バランスが取れ素晴らしいものでした。 また泊まりたい宿です。don't think there are many Ryokans in Japan that are so perfect. Many inns feel that the service, rooms, food, hot springs, facilities, etc. are out of balance. However, this inn is different. All the balances are balanced to create one harmony. If you want to experience the true Japanese Ryokan culture, we recommend visiting this inn. I think it's worth it.

素晴らしい温泉旅館　The best Ryokan ever！

The property is gorgeous. Gardens are so lovingly cared for. 

We were warmly welcomed by the parking lot attendant, front desk staff and everyone else we met. 

The baths, especially the rotemburo, are fantastic. Spotlessly clean, large enough to get a variety of temperatures. The baths were nicer than almost any other ryokan I've stayed at. 

The room was very clean and comfortable. Had all we needed included an ensuite toilet. The futon was not a traditional futon but was a multilayered foam bed called Body Zero. It was one of the absolutely most comfortable things I have ever slept on in my life. Wanted to buy some for our home in Canada but they are almost $600 each!

We partly chose it because Ryokan Sanga is a bit off the beaten path for Kurokawa. This is both good as it was very quiet there but a bit inconvenient if you wanted to walk about the town at night. There is a shuttle but you know, when you're on holidays sometimes you get a bit lazy. 

The food was delicious. Varied, tasty, well cooked, interesting and exactly what we were looking for in a ryokan. 

The only reasons we have not given this property a 5 is two fold. One we ate at tables in a room with all the other foreigners staying that night. Food was not offered to us in our room which is in our experience the more common theme and the fact that we were segregated was a bit odd.

Having said that was not the main reason. The pace of the meal was much much too quick for us and we felt very rushed at both dinner and breakfast. We usually had not finished a course when another arrived. It seemed someone, either the kitchen or the servers, was in a major hurry. The food was delicious. We loved it all but when you're feeling rushed it really takes away from enjoying the meal and relaxing. 

I would definitely stay there again but would need to be reassured that we could enjoy our meals at a more leisurely pace. 

Really enjoy this property and gladly recommend to all. We hope to return soon.

Beautiful property, lovely onsens, comfortable rooms, fantastic staff but ...

Our room was very large with a little sitting area that overlooks the waterfall river area and from where you can open the windows and go to sleep listening to water sounds. The room was a traditional tatami mat room. The Japanese futons were comfortable. The view from our room fantastic. 

The food both Breakfast and Dinner were very authentic and the staff members were very kind and polite. 

The outdoor baths in both female and mixed were amazing, surrounding by a beautiful nature. We also had been to 2 private baths, both were very impressive. 

We had an extremely relaxing traditional feeling to it. This place made our holiday very special.

Wonderful stay at Ryokan Sanga Onsen, we love the place so much.

Rural Japan- its pristine charm doesn’t get enough it will keep us coming back. 
     Tucked in a secluded forest in Kurokawa, Ryokan Sanga is not just a place to stay the night- it is an experience.
The bus ride from Fukuoka was worth the trip. We had the serenity and calmness in the middle of the forested Mount Aso. The kaiseki meal was great( took us 2 hours to finish) and the outdoor bath soothed my senses under a canopy of autumn colors. Opt for a room with a private stone bath in case you are going during peak season, when the rotenburos get crowded. Since it was too early for us to check in, we were allowed to keep our luggage in the ryokan and were shuttled back to the center where we roamed around seeing the river and bath houses, and eating whatever we fancied. Dont just do a day trip, stay overnight and experience the place

Rural Japan

The best Japanese wellness experience ever! Very friendly and helpful staff, great food but a little bit of habit (very Japanese) and wonderful obsen baths in the idyllic forest with a flowing river. No problems with tattoos either. Quiet location and a bit of distance from the other Onsen hotels. I can only recommend to everyone!
