This place is a perfect getaway for Rustic quiet beauty! After 5 busy days in Tokyo and Kyoto this was exactly what we needed! The area is incredibly picturesque (especially in the fall colors!). The rooms are traditional Japanese style, Rustic but very well appointed!
We loved the private onsen options, it made the stay that much better.
And of course, THE FOOD! The best meals thus far in Japan were here. The chef's presentation is beyond words and every dish was better than the last. It is so nice to have the meals in your cabaña! Wow!
Beyond the food, the service here was impeccable. As a rural destination we had no expectation that the staff would speak English, but they continued to go out of their way to find us English speaking staff and were incredibly patient with our broken Japanese.
We loved all of our room attendants, we especially want to thank Matsu. His positive energy was contagious the whole evening!

Perfect quiet getaway!

Overall the hotel had very friendly and helpful service. Good japanese style traditional room and onsen with multiple pools, there was also option for private pools. Small souvenier shop in the lobby. Hotel staff spoke some english. Visa was accepted for payment.

Traditional ryokan

Staffs were super friendly and helpful. Free pick-up service from the bus stop. As we arrived before check-in time, the driver dropped us at the main street and showed us where to eat and how to walk back to ryokan. The ryokan kindly offered us early check-in. Luggages were in the room already when we arrived. Front desk staff explained everything clearly. We could only book the private onsen once. Private onsen number one is a bit small, and the water was not hot enough, but the view is pretty with a small garden and rock mountain. I love the large outdoor onsen (for hotel guests only). Water was hot. Beutiful environment and great atmosphere. Changing room was clean and spacious. The smaller outdoor onsen is for public. Room was a bit old and simple, but it came with a cute balcony which I didn't expect.  Food was great. Dinner was served in room, and breakfast was served in breakfast room. Overall a great ryokan experience.

The Kurokawaso is a Ryokan complete in every respect. The loaction at the river is beautiful, the rooms traditional, spacious, clean and quite. The private onsen as well as the shared onsen are really nice. Maybe the best at all is the food. The dinneris fresh, rich, imaginative and nice arranged. It´s served on the room, while the comprehensive breakfast is served in a common room. The staff is very friendly and helpful, English is no problem.

Perfekt Ryokan with great food

The Kurokawaso Ryokan is a great place to experience a unique Japanese Onsen experience. The place offers private villas in an antique Japanese style. Breakfast and dinner are included. The dinner is served in the private villa and consists of nine unforgettable courses! Visiting the Kurokawoso Ryokan was one of the best experiences we ever had in Japan! You can get there by bus from Fukuoka, Kumamoto or Yufuin. The hotel staff will pick you up at the bus station Kurokawaso Onsen.

Wonderful Ryokan in private villa - unforgettable!

Everything about this ryokan is incredible. The onsen facilities are top class. Food is great. Tatami bedrooms are beautiful. The town itself is a lot of fun and very charming. Highly recommended visit!

Incredible Ryokan!

We stayed for one night only. 

Wonderful service.  They can arrange for pickup and drop off if requested. 

Just 5 -10 minutes walk to shops,  but yet quiet and secluded. 

The room comes with a view of the river and the cliff.  I woke up to the sounds of the birds and river running!  

The public onsen comes with a indoor and outdoor pool.  There are private family Onsen too!  The water felt different,  it is not as drying as the other onsens we been. 

Will plan for a return trip and stay a longer time!

Beautiful place that will cleanse a tired soul

I really enjoyed my stay in this ryokan. Service was fantastic. It was so cold my car windshield iced up the next morning and the staff poured hot water to remove the ice without being asked. Food was simply delicious and there was a lot to eat!   For people who are shy, you can book a private onsen. The outdoor onsen for guest is nicer than the one for the Kurokawa pass. There is a onsen with brown water and another with green water. They switch from male to female everyday so guests can enjoy both the onsens. Our Rooms are traditional Tatami style which were simple but very clean. I will return to stay in this Ryokan if I pass this way again

Lovely Ryokan

Kurokawa is an Onsen town located near to Mount Aso in Kumamoto prefecture. It takes around 1 to 2 hours drive from Kumamoto town Centre. Kurokawa So is a ryokan which provides ryokan stay plus Kaiseiki Dinner. What I like about the place is that the staff are very friendly and the host can speak good English. We were there early during lunch hour and she was able to recommend us a home made soba restaurant just behind the Ryokan, it was another good experience which I will share in my next review. The Onsen boasts of 2 large outside pool for guests to relax. There are also 2 indoor pools in case the weather gets cold. We were a family of 5 and all of us could gather into one large tatami room. The dinner was served in the room and the housekeeper helped us to set up the futons for the night. It was indeed an awesome experience. I would recommend to anyone looking for a nice romantic ryokan experience. The phone number on the GPS doesn't work, you would need to key in the information centre phone number in the town. Kurokawa So is located just as you are entering the village, easy to find.
