We enjoyed our stay very much, it was a beautiful discovery at many levels. Serenity, beauty, understated sophistication are words that come to mind. We felt truly disconnected from everyday life and were privileged to discover Chef Keiko Kuwakino’s food at @sanaburi which 1 week ago was voted 40 top 100 best vegetable restaurant in the world.

Beautiful discovery

A small quaint village an hour and a half from Tokyo station leads you to crisp air, hot spring sunset dip with memory, umpteen course meal with local|organic drink pairing for every meal, and a sweet spot for a night cap. Snow started to fall during the middle of the night and by morning the area was covered in white. 

Staff are personal, cordial and quirky. More like your awkward family making a special meal for you, rather than a five star hotel.  I went there on a recommendation from a friend who raves about the food. A hot spring fellow bather who I met there also was referred by a food connoisseur.

If you are planning a getaway different from the usual Izu hot spring then Satoyama Jujyo is a place to consider.  Location is in Niigata which is famous for its rice crops and Japanese Sake and skiing.  

It’s a ski resort during winter time lots of lodges.  

Satoyama Jyujo is a mixed between modern living and traditional Japanese ryokan.  Where is a mixed of western furniture with the old Japanese style building/tatami Mat. 

I don’t recommend going with children. It’s more for couples. 

You are surrounded by mountains and nature.   Since you are in Niigata definitely spend a day touring the different rice Sake brewery and take home a few bottles. 

Luxury Trip in Niigata

Terrible hotel and to be avoided!  Aesthetics of a youth hostel...felt like I was a teenager at summer camp. You can stay at the Four Seasons or Mandarin Oriental in Tokyo for a cheaper rate and have real luxury!  

Very boring with no activities at all...we expected to bike, hike enjoy nature, but the only thing to do is sit in the onsen all day. 

Incredibly strict rules about when and what you can eat. Only option is a traditional Japanese breakfast that you need to pre-book at am exact time. Then no food available until dinner, which is an obligatory 10 course dinner that's very tedious.  Couldn't imagine having to sit though this multiple nights in a row.

Disaster! Like staying in a prison...first time ever leaving a hotel early

The hotel is located on a hill, hidden among the trees and blends in perfectly with the environment. The building is traditional japanese style building and through out the lobby and the dining area the architect has kept the old building's original elements. But the rooms are a whole different story, it is simple, modern and attentive to details.
Each room has its own balcony that overlooks the courtyard area, and on the balcony there is a bathtub. We really enjoyed rising early in the morning and take a bath to get the day started. Oh, and each room is designed by a different architect, so it's really fun to go do a little room hopping to check out our friends' rooms as well.
The meals (included in the accommodation) are wonderful as well, a lot of ingredients sourced from the local area, even from the local woods.  
We really felt relaxed and at ease after staying at satoyama jujo and would love to take our visitors to here again!

wonder weekend trip!

I stayed at Satoyama Jujo for one night in early June with my partner and two other couples. This day was extremely relaxing and the food was plentiful and hit all the right notes. Now, we did stay during a special event where we had the privilege of experiencing a fusion tea ceremony in the middle of a rice paddy. However, I think such an event really speaks to the thought process that went into the creation of this ryokan as well as to the experience they try to provide their guests. The ryokan tries to ease the border between the natural space and the human, "artificial" space. The mountain surroundings and traditional architecture of the building surrounds you with trees and wood. The outdoor baths in each room further stretch the boundary. (These rotenburo are a staple of onsen culture and are equally fantastic on cold winter and warm summer nights.) The chef and her cooks go out every morning to forage for mountain vegetables and herbs. The morning finds dictate the dinner meal. The communal outdoor/indoor onsen is open from the afternoon until the following morning and who gets to use which side changes over after dinner. Go once before and once after dinner to enjoy both sides of the bath (I preferred the left side myself).

If you're looking for a quiet place to stay outside the usual haunts, I highly recommend Satoyama Jujo. While there isn't much nearby, in the winter there are several ski resorts and you can visit the Hakkaisan nihon-shu (sake) brewery, which is a 25 min drive away.

A Secluded Ryokan off the Beaten Path

Amazing trip. 
We visited during the snow season , so just upon arrival the area was surrounded by deep snow - so white and quiet 
The hotel itself is a one-of-its-kind experience : managed and produced by a famous lifestyle magazine in Japan
The amenities all have a specific reason of why it was selected which they tell the story about in little signs ( Japanese only ) 
And the food... the food !! Mainly vegetables , it is the perfect balance of being simple enough to taste the real ingredients of the area ( Niigata is well known for having good veggies ) , and the chefs creativeness 
To top off a perfect night , the hot bath where you can see outside into the large slope is just what you need . 
Definitely the best onsen ryokan stay I have ever had . Want to give it more than a 5!!

Oh... that hot hot Japanese “Onzen”,  accompany with breathtaking snow mountain view, and that great interior design... Food with local natural ingredients for dinner and breakfast... I don’t want to leave...!!

Snow Mountain Japanese Hot Spring Retreat

My sister recommend me to go. The architecture of the hotel was so gorgeous. Actually, I haven’t seen such a huge amount of snow. I joined free walking tour and saw “Yukimuro”, which is natural refrigerator commonly used in this deep-snow district. The guide said, the vegetables become sweeter after reserved under the snow( it was totally covered with snow).
When I ate dinner, that was proved. Especially, radishes were sooo sweeter than that i’ve ever known. And the rice...I have no idea to describe how I impressed. I definitely come back here.
If you go there, you should use hot spring to see the sunrise. ( this time, i woke up around 6:00-6:30, i’m not sure).
