Muikamach-town of Niigata pref. , where ryugon is located, is known for its heavy snow. It is a fantastic experience to stay in a renovated traditional Japanese ryokan surrounded by a super winter wonderland.
We stayed in the room with a half-open-aired bath and it was luxurious to plunge in the bath seeing snow. 
Furthermore, the most luxurious one was the dinner. There are many fabulous dishes in the world but there is nothing more than a dish with the best quality rice and locally grown foods. 
Thanks to the cozy space and the free bar in the lounge, we had a relaxed time.
The only advice I can tell you is you had better bring thick socks to walk the corridors in the ryokan.

This is the snow; the extraordinary experience.

ryugon really nails it on all counts. It was recently rebuilt, but you wouldn't be able to tell by walking around the property grounds. The architecture exudes old-world Japan charm, yet everything inside is modern - there's no skimping on technology (lightning-fast WiFi, power ports everywhere, a proper desk and chair for working, light switches next to the bed, etc.) and functionality. In the common areas, it's a mixture of old Japan and old Japan with an artsy twist (see photos for an idea of what I mean.)  It really feels like you're in an Edo-era Samurai's residence.

We stayed in the top room category (Villa Suite Premium), of which there are three. Our suite (Room G) seemed to be the best located with the best privacy. It faced a beautiful pond with a forest beyond it, and an incredible open-air onsen hot springs bath right on the terrace. It was serene, soothing and incredibly refreshing. If you can swing it, I would highly recommend this room.

Meals are served in the main restaurant - we usually prefer ryokans that serve meals in the comfort of our own room - but at least they offer private rooms in the restaurant so you can enjoy dinner with some semblance of intimacy. And the food was great. Not only that, but ryugon focuses on local ingredients (with some exceptions, since it's not near the ocean so some of the seafood was brought in from the coast), and overall they do an amazing job with the creativity.. both in terms of flavoring as well as artistic flair. Rice was particularly noteworthy; Uonuma Shiozawa rice is regarded by some as some of the best (if not THE best) rice in all of Japan, and ryugon serves it up by cooking it in individual pot, and it was done to perfection.  If you think of rice as a carb-laden staple to be eaten together with condiments, you wouldn't be wrong, but in this particular case, the rice was so incredible that it can be enjoyed all by itself. Consider it the butter croissants of rice and you wouldn't be far off!

Service by the staff were professional, prompt and graceful. They stay out of the way when not needed, but come to your immediate attention when called upon, and they do it with a big smile. It's very polished, yet never intrusive.

Especially for those that have done the ryokan circuits in places like Hakone, Nikko and Izu already, ryukon is a great choice that offers something different (and in many ways... better) than some of its more famous onsen ryokan brethren. As an added bonus - while not "cheap" by any means the nightly rate at a top suite at ryugon will likely come in lower than entry-level rooms at more well known luxury ryokans.

A first-class ryokan and a unique experience from the ordinary

Amazing two days at this piece of heaven. In this place, everything is done to a special standard. This ryokan makes you feel at ease. We enjoyed removing our shoes and walking around in bare feet, it made the whole place feel relaxing rather than just the room. Our room was really spacious. This was truly luxurious way of traveling. What really made the stay special was the evening dinner. It wasn't just the wonderful food, the overall experience was incredible right from the moment we entered the restaurant. This visit certainly won't be our last.

Perfection in Niigata

For years I’ve been saying that my dream was to stay in one of Japan’s traditional inns, a ryokan. I wondered whether my dream would come true on this tour. As we drove up to the hotel, I couldn’t contain my excitement. It was a ryokan. A centuries old dark wood building with paper doors and an onsen, a Japanese bath. But this was not just any ryokan, it was Ryugon, recently renovated ryokan incorporating whimsical artsy touches. I was in heaven. I wasn’t sure what to expect from dinner at a modern/traditional ryokan. Dressed in the yukata, casual cotton robes, provided for us, we were lead into a contemporary style dining room with floor to ceiling windows, overlooking beautiful ponds and gardens. A long thin paper menu was placed next to each seat. I scolded myself for forgetting to bring my reading glasses, until I realized that no choices needed to be made, we would be served all of the mouth watering courses. The restaurant took advantage of Niigata’s bounty of seasonal produce, like mountain picked mushrooms, pumpkin, fish, beef and lotus root. After a long, lavish dinner, I headed off to the onsen. I showered before opening the door and stepping outside into the freezing night air, then slipped into the steaming hot water of the rock pool. As I luxuriated, I gazed up at the sky, recalling the once in a life time moments of the day. That night my ryokan fantasies came full circle. I returned to my room to find that a traditional Japanese floor mattress, a futon, had been laid out for me on the tatami mats. As I nestled inside the fluffy duvet I was amazed how warm and cozy it was. The Ryogen Ryokan was a dream come true.

We treated ourselves with one night at Ryugon, a luxury ryokan in Muikamachi about two hours from Tokyo. Ryugon offers a unique and stunning experience. The ryokan complex consists of a series of houses which are connected by a wooden walkway which gives visitors a beautiful view of the garden and pond which are part of the grounds. It’s probably the only place in Japan designated as a cultural heritage site (200 year old wooden building, it seems it used to belong to a wealthy farmer/local ruler) which is also a ryokan.

The ryokan has just finished renovations, so everything is very new. Everything is made of wood and has a nice feel. 
Some of the rooms face onto the pond and have a small private hot spring bath on the veranda, meaning you can take a bath almost any time of night or day and enjoy the view at the same time. I would note that I personally find Japanese hot springs a bit too hot sometimes - but it turns out you can just call reception and ask them to adjust the temperature if you also find the temperature preferred by Japanese people a bit too high. 

The food provided at the restaurant is sourced locally, and you can tell a lot of effort has gone into creating a menu that highlights local treats such as vegetables that grow in the local mountains. They can also cater for vegetarians/vegans with great alternative options. 

Staff are very friendly and helpful - if you have been to Japan before, you will know that service in Japan is generally very good, but I would say service at Ryugon feels special because staff are incredibly friendly but without being stiff. 

The opening of a spa attached to the hotel is planned for later this year, and we will definitely consider going again then as well. We went in summer, which was beautiful, but imagine it’s also incredible in winter when everything is covered in the thick layer of snow that this region is famous for. 


Stunning 200 year old cultural heritage site/ryokan in Muikamachi!

Historical building traced back to 1495, this famous resort has great landscape, historical hotel building and hot spring. Food wasn’t up to expectation in the beginning, but after communication it turned out well. We enjoyed its big room & walking around the site and the area. We liked the 24 hours hot spring a lot, dipped ourselves several times a day. Will be back if next time come back to the area.

Hotspring Resort With 200+ Years History - 超過兩百年的溫泉旅館

Very well maintained old style Japanese hotel. Set on large grounds with lots of water and beautifully landscaped. Meals were very traditional and quite tasty. If you want the full Japanese experience I would definitely recommend. The staff were very friendly and very a tentative to your every wish. 

Very traditional Japanese style hotel

This is an enormous ryokan (old farm houses turned into a new complex), with two onsens, multiple gardens and even two shops and a little museum room. There was space to explore, to walk around. It never felt crowded and we rarely saw other people. Regarding the room, it is a rare feeling in a ryokan that you cannot hear the people next door at all. 

Great service, particularly for luggage (not only on arrival but also upon departure). Got little souvenirs at check-out, and our shoes were neatly arranged with a note wishing for good luck. The place is aesthetically pleasing in multiple ways, kaiseki dinner amazingly beautiful, too (thought not that amazingly delicious compared to some others). 

There is a somewhat musty smell in the room, probably not throughout the hotel. Onsen areas were really nice with open-air baths. We have traveled in dozens of ryokans and this is one of the most beautiful.

Traditions, perfected with small details

This is a return visit and we loved/love the place. It is a complex of Shogun era buildings assembled around an onsen. The bath facilities are out of this world. The large private bath is indoor/outdoor, the smaller pvt bath has a gorgeous view of a forest. Even the public baths are great. The landscape is fantastic, plus there are ducks, koi, frogs. All just really amazing. Staying here has been a highlight of two trips to Japan

Food is also really special. A  gorgeous presentation of great tastes, local ingredients made with care

The drawbacks: last time we were put in the care of a woman who spoke some English, this time no one seems to speak any. Pointing at modem, and opening up the wifi "enter password window on my iPad", I was handed a phone. (Eventually, they got it)  A "No sushi/sashimi" request brought a dinner which included sashimi (it was exquisite, but my sister won't eat it). 

This is definitely a black diamond travel adventure, even the tourist office couldn't help us get here! But we love being here 

So to get here, 
Take the Maxtoki shinkasen from Tokyo station to Echigo Yuzawa (Bound for Niigata--about 90 minutes)
Then transfer to a train on the Hokuhoku Line to Muikamachi (bound for Naoetsu or Tokamachi-- about 15 minutes)

Taxis are plentiful and with the hotel phone number, a taxi with a GPS can easily get you to the hotel--about 10 minutes away. The hotel can arrange all other drop offs and pick ups

I hope I haven't made this sound daunting, it is pure indulgence and worth every effort. I would recommend a minimum of two nights
