We stayed at the Akakura hotel an Annex for a week. The staff were very good to us and helped us in any way they could. The breakfast were generous and catered for Western and Japanese tastes. Really good access to ski lifts at Akakura Onsen ski resort.While the motel itself is a little dated it has a charm along with Myoko Kogan that is irresistible. I will definitely be going back and look forward to seeing the crew at the Akakura Hotel and Annex again. A special that’s to Nigel for him s hard work and advice.

Good quality accommodation in Myoko Kogen

Mould in bathroom, freezing cold at night due to heating turned off, non existing cleaning. Never been so cold in my life. Only positive - breakfast.  Onsen big, but filthy and extreme need of refurbishment

Simply just do not go here

The service here is impeccable, most staff knows limited English but they will make every effort to help you out. There is an English speaking staff (Nigel) onsite on most days. 
We stayed 5 nights in a Japanese-Western room, literally we were given 2 rooms divided by a corridor (same room number on both doors). We slept in the Japanese tatami room which is mattress on the floor, then cross the hallway to the Western sitting room with sofa and tv etc. 
Everyone is given yukata (Japanese robe) and slippers to wear around the hotel, kids sizes are available upon request for our 6 year old. There are 7 onsens, we booked a private onsen for our family to try it out. It was great experience, most importantly very clean.  
The hotel decor is like walking into a time warp from the 60s. Time stood still here but it was an interesting experience. Most of the hotel guests were Japanese while we were there. One night they even had a mochi live demonstration and we get to sample freshly made mochi. My son still raves about it, how yummy it was. 
Breakfast was good, besides Japanese food they provide western food which includes bread, pasta, chips, chicken nuggets etc. 
The hotel is off the main street but still very convenient as everywhere in Myoko is walking distance. Walking distance to the various ski lifts.

Interesting rooms and decor with exceptional service

Highly recommended this hotel. This hotel passed through a long history, their decorations have many old Japanese style combined with western style. Very interesting for foreign visitors. It’s near to ski park. And the onsen here is very big, they also offer yukata for visitors to wear!!! The food is nice and very Japanese style, furthermore we can saw nice view from our room. I would like to visit here again.

It's not at all Japanese traditional, try a ryokan if you want that.
Staff were great.
Weekends were a nightmare. No ski lockers available, breakfast waited 30 minutes to be seated and eventually gave up to ensure we got first tracks ( which we did)
By comparison the place was deserted on weekdays.
It's in a convenient location to walk into town and to the lifts.
Myoko itself is a great ski field for kids as it has gentle runs

Not bad but avoid weekends

We have stayed 3 times at the Akakura hotel and Annex when we are having our Japanese Skiing experiences.
Every time we stay the whole staff treat us with warmth, help and kindness. The rooms are always clean and tidy, a breakfast to die for and Onsen to relax after a good hard days skiing or to simply wake up to in the morning to be fresh for the day. ( do both).
The owners Ritsuko and Yoshinora should be very proud of their staff and Linda and I will be back to stay whenever were are in Myoko.

Simply the Best

This hotel is not five star and does not pretend to be. It is a comfortable hotel that is close to the ski slopes and a short walk to the main street in town. One of the main attractions of this hotel is the onsen. A great way to sooth the body after a day on the slopes.

Good Basic Hotel

We stayed at the Annex, not the main hotel. It's not as nice but if you don't mind older-looking amenities it's excellent value for money! The staff are super helpful and speak very fluent English (during the snow season, anyway) so you'll be well looked after! We highly recommend getting the buffet breakfast as well - less hassle than finding your own!

Our room was a bit old, but again, if you don't mind that, it's very spacious and comfortable. We were in a room with western beds, but also with a tatami room with traditional bedding. In the end we used the bedrolls as they had given us 2 single beds instead of a double/queen (we didn't ask and just assumed, whoops!) but it was still lovely to have a choice. 

The onsens make a lovely end to a day on the slopes. The biggest one is the best equipped but the other ones are nice too. 

There are clanking noises in the early morning and evening due to the water heaters, but we didn't really mind it.

Very comfortable!

For many years we have been traveling through the ski resorts of Japan. Including several visits to Akaku. We have stayed in different hotels, so there is something to compare. This hotel is perfect in all respects - close to the lift, there are 3 ounces and a space for storing ski equipment. For breakfast there is something to choose from - both traditional Japanese and European products. The staff is very friendly and always ready to come to the aid (not always there is English speaking staff on site, but if necessary someone will be called). The only problem was that the hotel had a lot of students (organized group), due to which the dining room was closed for them.

I'm not going to name this hotel any other way. It has 3 stars. The rooms are different: from super economical to good level. The cleaning in the room became normal (they stopped dropping things on the floor) only after my comment at the reception. Of the hotel staff speak English at most two people. So, I recommend that you stock up a chatbot if you plan to talk to the hotel staff, or, look for two young enough people (they usually live in the second reception) who can talk to you in English.
