We stayed as a group of 3 for two nights in Feb 2019. Great location right in the middle of Akakura, easy to get to ski hire and lift access. Rooms were clean and traditional, with plenty of space. Also great to get cheap lift passes at the front desk, and breakfast was very convenient and tasty!

Best part was the absolutely amazing service and how accommodating the hosts were! Always going above and beyond, especially giving us a last minute lift to the train station when we couldn’t find a cab. 

Could not recommend more highly and will definitely be back!

Great Hotel and Fantastic Service!

We chose to stay at the Star Hotel because of it's location, price and the fact that u can get rooms with a western bed and bathroom (I'm not a fan of Japanese style shared bathrooms). It's a family run hotel (as most of them are) and they're lovely people... They don't speak a lot of English but enough to get by. It is an old building and the rooms are really outdated, but that's not unusual in Japan, especially in the smaller towns. The hotel reception is on the 4th floor (u take the lift up to check in). Rooms are a decent size (which was good since we had ski bags with us). The main entrance to the hotel has a few stairs up to level 2, which get covered in snow regularly. But u can enter/exit through the parking garage on level 1 if the stairs are too slippery in ski boots etc. there is a ski locker on level 1, but it isn't locked, so they're ok with you taking skis etc up to the rooms if u want to (just be careful and only leave them in the entrance where u leave your shoes). There's an Onsen on level 2 (which my partner said was really hot). The hotel itself is right at the end of the Main Street of Akakura Onsen. The bus stop that takes you to all the other ski resorts (Suginohara etc) is at the other end of the street and it can be a bit slippery walking down the street in the morning before they clear it. It was also a bit of an effort to drag our ski bags up the hill through the snow when we arrived by bus. It's about a 5-10 min walk over to the Alakura Onsen ski lifts (the hotel is ~ half way between the bus stop and the Akakura lifts, so it's a good spot if u want to spend some time at Akakura and some time visiting the other resorts too). They sell lift tickets at the hotel (for the Akakura Onsen & Akakura Kanko hills), which are a little cheaper than if u get them at the actual hill. Unless I win lotto and can afford somewhere fancy, i'd stay here again! 

Decent location & price

Slightly dated but amazingly welcoming and friendly staff.
We stayed for 6 nights and had breakfast and dinner included in our stay for a very reasonable price. The food was fantastic, mostly Japanese and the hosts would always explain what we were eating!
They offer lift discounts for the local resorts (Kanko & Onsen) and will be eager to help you in any way they can - directions to the bus, how to catch the train etc etc.
The room was clean and comfortable, again slightly dated but every we needed for a ski trip, had 2 single beds and a large tatami area with a new TV. They have ski storage down stairs but advised it isn't locked, but are happy if you take you're gear up to the room so long as it's clear of snow and you're respectful. 
Wifi is decent within the hotel, we were in 502 and had no problems with it. Experienced some dead spots (particularly around the dining area & table tennis room) but overall had minimal issues.
Onsen is clean and functional, with very hot water. 
I truly cannot speak highly enough of the amazing staff, this is a family run hotel (husband & wife + daughter , and grandfather) who will do absolutely anything to make your stay more comfortable. We will definitely stay again if & when we return to Myoko.

Fantastic place for a ski trip.

Pros-

1. Very reasonably price as compared to many other surrounding establishments that charges more but offer less. For me, it's a very good deal.
2. Peaceful and quiet. Not luxurious but a small family run boutique hotel with maybe only 9 or 10 rooms.
3. Fantastic location. Right smack in the center of Akakura Onsen at the top overlooking the main street. It is not ski-in, ski-out but only 6-7 minutes walk either way, down main street towards the Yodel chairlift or turn right towards the Kumado chairlift. 
4. Room was big and spacious with lots to spare. It had 2 single beds, a futon mat area that can easily sleep another 2 or 3. A sort of small kitchenette for preparing hot tea and beverages, a small area and a rack for the snow stuff and a small coffee table in the middle installed with under heater mechanism help to keep warm.
5. I was in room 506 and Wi-Fi was pretty reliable and consistent.
6. Private bath and toilet facilities i believe in all rooms. Though dated, it serve its purpose and in winter, cold water was expectantly cold while hot water was thankfully consistently hot.
7. A storage room on the 1st floor for all ski and snowboard gears. However in a rarity, the hosts here allow guests to bring their gears and equipment back to your own room where obviously, you are expected to keep the room clean and tidy.   
8. A small but very hot in-house onsen with natural minerals. After a cold day on the slopes, nothing beat stripping down and soothing off in a pool of hot natural water.
9. Breakfast prepared by Shinseigei san and wifey was simple, delicious and good. I alternate between the japanese and western breakfast and for both options, the hosts varies it day to day. It is advisable to make reservation with breakfast as it seemed at least till 11am, most surrounding joints are closed and breakfast is a non-event.
10. A convenience store right next door to take care of emergencies should you go hungry or thirsty. Another 2 or 3 shops away, Skate Bar for après-ski and the night revelers.
11. Wonderful hosts that are friendly, sincere and nothing is too much to ensure guests have a pleasant stay. Minami was very informative and helpful especially with the discounted ski-passes and rentals, breakfast choices, dinner options about town, while her 1yr old gal Akani was simply adorable and kept me entertained no end. Naoto san, the hubby picked me up from Myoko station while the father Shinseigei san sent me to the station on my day of departure. Such a close knit and gracious family ( hope I got all the names and spelling correct ) and I hope to be back next year. 

Cons-

In all honesty, given what I paid for and what I got in return, I can't think of any.

11 to nothing. A STAR it is...

We visited in January 2018 for 7 days. The rooms are large enough for a family of 4 and have their own bathroom and toilet. Other similar properties in the area use shared bathrooms so we loved this difference.  The room has a sitting area that you also use to sleep on futons each night. There is also 2 single beds but we all preferred to sleep on futons. The onsite onsen is clean and perfect each night after skiing. We had breakfast at the property each morning as breakfast is not readily available at most places in Akakura. The owners ask you if you prefer western or Japanese style breakfast and we had a combination of both. It was delicious. They also went out of their way to cater for our 2 children. 
The property is at the top of the main street and an easy walk to the nearby ski fields. There are plenty of restaurants in walking distance and the convenience store next door has fruit and drinks.
We loved our stay as we wanted a Japanese style of accommodation and experience rather than accommodation adapted to westerners.
