We were there during peak season (winter time), so we paid a steep price for it. Here are some pros and cons of staying here that I would like to share:

Pros:
1. There are many convenience stores nearby
2. One famous bakery just right beside the hostel, and I highly recommend to try their pecan nut and apple pies
3. 10-minute walk from the Nagano station
4. Friendly staffs
5. Overall cleanliness is acceptable

Cons:
1. The room gets pretty cold at night despite the heater is turned on
2. The pillow and bed are too soft
3. The whole place is not well-lit and gets pretty dark at night
4. The kitchen is too cold despite the gas heater is provided
5. Toothbrush, toothpaste and bath towel are not provided, but you can get them with additional charge
6. Creaky floorboards and doors

Not a comfortable stay yet a nice experience

Not comfortable at all, and still a steep price. We paid 100 euro a night and paid less in Kyoto Kanazawa and Hiroshima which were far better places. The beds in de dormitory are composed capsule-like with no finishing, just plain plywood. It is very dark inside. We slept in another room with just a double bed in it, the matras has a dunk in the middle of the bed. The room is not lockable, only from the outside with a padlock. There's dust everywhere. The douche is rusty, it's a former capsule douche but now there's a curtain before it which clings to your body while showering, the jet of the douche is to the wall and non adjustable, and cold water is dripping from the fawlty rainshower overhead. Towels cost an extra fee.

Probably the worst hostel I stayed in while in Japan. The room are a series of plywood boxes with mattresses inside. The hostel has a bar/ restaurant downstairs so there is no actual common space for the hostel itself. The bar is eclectic, however there was never anyone in there at night. Almost no one else was staying at the hostel, which probably contributed to the lack of atmosphere. Might be better in the winter ski season?

Weird Hostel

This is a bit of an odd animal. The business is actually a restaurant and bar that also has a guesthouse in the back. The atmosphere in the bar is strange - like being in a zany thai temple / lounge with odd sculptures and decorations. Once you pass through that and get to the back, there is a small kitchen and two floors of small rooms. My wife and I stayed in a 2 person room with a big comfy bed. The room itself was small so the bed basically took up the entire space. The door didn't really have a built in lock, just a small padlock that you used to lock up. The bathrooms were spotless and the showers were small but worked well. The staff are very friendly and the owner is a really nice guy. That was easily the best part of the experience. He takes the time to talk to each of his guests and he is a real adventurer so he has some awesome stories. The price of a room also comes with a free drink once a day. And that ain't bad neither ;) The guesthouse is not that close to the Nagano station so you'll either have to walk about 20min or take the subway a few stops and then walk another 10min. The property is on one of the main roads that leads straight into the big temple famous in the area. There is a convenience store directly across the street and an alleyway of shops and restaurants just around the corner.

A it unusual but a good experience all considered

I was in Nagano for a night and came in here for food. The menu has great Asian food and deeelicious local craft beers. The owner was so friendly. The interior is very cool, laidback and relaxed. Great value! The following night I missed my overnight bus and was alone in Nagano at 11:45pm. I called the owner and he said he had a free bed. Not only did he stay open until I arrived, he booked another bus for me for the following morning and was just the kindest nicest person. The beds are like little cubicles, they have lights and sockets and privacy and are very comfortable. The place is very cool and I highly recommend it. It's in a good location too, very close to Zenkoji Temple and around 20 mins walk from the train station.

Staff here are fabulous, happy to help and chat. Accommodation was super affordable and in a fabulous position in Nagano. **free drink card in check in. Meals also great, different influences from all over the world. Suit solo or budget conscience traveler.
