We very much enjoyed this hotel. Traditional rooms with tatami and futons, very friendly staff. They don’t speak much English and our Japanese is non existent, but we communicated easily with google translate! There are private family Onsen on site as well as public baths for men and women. We only used the family ones and they were lovely, especially after a long walk! The hotel provided complimentary shuttle bus to and from Nakatsugawa station and also to Magome for the start of our walk. Food was excellent, which is good because the hotel is quite remote and there are no other options for eating. The breakfast is traditional Japanese. The only reason I did not give 5 stars is that the decor is in need of a little updating, but it was clean and comfortable. I would definitely recommend.

Lovely stay

This old samurai house offered good service and we had free use of private onsen.  The service staff were polite and accommodating.  Unlike some other onsens we find the onsen temperatures set very hot.  They should tidy up the surrounding outdoor areas as it is in a nice wooded area.

We loved this traditional royokan.  It feels like it is in the middle of no where but luckily our sat nav found it.  The decor is very dated,  but it is spotlessly clean, comfortable and the family and staff are wonderfully hospitable.  Just enough English is spoken to get by.  We chose our meal during the day for the evening and I was amazed to find they produced vegetarian meals with no problem.  Nothing was too much trouble.  Choice of onsen - male and female, 2 private ones which you could use if they were free and an outdoor one you could book.  We had our own transport, but a minibus is available to get you to the nakansendo walks or pick up / drop off at the station.

The hotel itself is a little dated, but the stay was exceptional. Ample green tea in room. Access to hot baths. Rural location with beautiful view from outside bath of stars at night. The hotel was run by a lady and her parents. They were very hospitable and as we arrived by train they collected us from station and dropped us to the start of our walk we walked to do in the countryside. The lady and her mother also decided to adorn us in traditional kimono attire one evening which was fun. Breakfast was substantial, but not quite sure what we were eating at times. The hotel dinners weren't bad - there is no other option to eat anywhere else as the hotel is very isolated.
