Naoshima

A guesthouse owned by a very friendly, English and French speaking couple (Monsieur). Several types of Japanese rooms are available. We were staying in the old house, in a large room with tatami and we were very thick and very comfortable.

A very friendly family welcome

Strange to see this place getting mostly good reviews because our experience was not great. Sure it’s a great location and being Japanese it’s clean. But that’s all the  positives·
Our “apartment” had two single mattresses and two single beds crammed into one room. Yes, it sleeps four technically but it’s not relaxed to be so crowded together. The mattresses on the floor were very thin, so I felt like I was trying to sleep on concrete! The duvets were short and made even shorter by the weird sheets fitted around them so my feet were sticking out. All of that amounted to two bad nights’ sleep. 
The host, who smelled strongly of alclogol when we arrived, seemed confused about how to operate the heating — after a few false starts he eventually showed us how to turn on the heating but not how to turn it off.  
Later he misinformed us about the ferry timetable (while maintaining there was no need to phone and check). As a result we missed the last direct ferry to Teshima, nearly got stranded on Naoshima and actually had to take a much longer route to Teshima via Uno. 
Finally he was inflexible about breakfast time. We asked for 9 because we were tired after a long journey. We were told that was too early, why not 8? We agreed to have it at 830. It came at 815. Not a big deal but why ask if there is no real choice? 


Not so comfortable or helpful 

The apartment we stayed in was new, and was clean & comfortable.
Only 2 people can sleep in a bed, the other(s) sleep on a futon. 
(and I realised (not just on this night), that sleeping on a futon is harder than I remembered. But if you're under 40, it probably is no problem :-)

Comfortable stay for 3

On the art island we had a little difficulty finding the correct transport to the east side of the island where the guesthouse is , from the port - it's bus number two - but we were welcomed by the owner who is a fluent French speaker. 
The rooms are simple but clean and well equipped - fridge freezer, microwave, not water dispenser and aircon/ heater and a very quick water heater for the shower - which is very powerful!!

BEWARE MONDAYS- only one museum open AND NO RESTAURANTS OPEN!!

A very nice local establishment

We stayed in one of the two newer buildings. The rooms were large and clean. Good location for all the sights of the island. Bicycles were provided. Affordable price.

The following conditions shall apply:

Premise: I booked in this place because the others seemed very poor to me, this seemed better than the others... We had the modern cabin, the room was big, the patio very nice, the good location for departure (talk about the ship that leaves for One in the morning if you have to cross to Tokyo like us) rather than to stay on the island. Maybe on the other side there are more places to eat... but for two nights it was fine here too. If you see the map of Naoshima you'll understand what I'm talking about.

Guest house in the middle.

Traveling to Naoshima (Art Island) most think that heading to Miyanoura Port is the best option, well let me tell you heading to the other less busier side of the island to the Port of Hommura is a great. I arrived by ferry for Uno Port and checked into the ‘Guest House Omiyake’, it is right near the ferry port and right on the water, I had a great fully self contained apartment overlooking the harbour, the apartment was great, spacious, well appointed and very clean, it comes with a washing machine if you need.  The owners are a charming older couple and happy to assist where possible. The location is central to the town and very close to the Art House Project ticketing office where you can purchase 1 ticket to visit all the current exhibitions on this side of the island.  There are local shuttle buses to the other art areas ie Benesse House Museum transfer point or to the Miyanoura Port and run on a very regular schedule, the trip is about 10 minutes and costs 100 yen. So I can recommend this great accommodation and location.

A great place to be based from......

Today we had an experience we never had before and it was not a nice one! 
We made a booking through Booking.com a few months ago, because we thought Naoshima would be a great destination during our roundtrip in Japan. 
The location was not easy to find, because of the very very small name plate. Unfortunately we couldn't enter the front door, but we had to walk with our suitcases to the back of the guest house; over a parking place and... a building site. 
We booked the garden room that was supposed to be quiet at the back of th garden alone from the rest of the house. It turned out that houses are being build directly behind the room. Also the laundry was hanging outside practically in front of the door we need to enter. We mentioned these things to the owner who was not very polite and then decided to cancel the booking himself at Booking.com. He admitted that the situation was not ideal, but he just wanted us to leave. So there we were with our suitcases and without a roof above our head on a Monday afternoon with almost the entire village closed. Not an ideal and welcoming experience. Luckily we found a place to stay, but we decided to shorten the trip.

Don't go here; it is a mess!

Guest House Omiyake is charming and very well located near the deck of the port of Honmura. The apartment is perfect for four with its kitchen, bathroom and 2 small bedrooms (one with 2 beds on the west and the other with 2 futons), well equipped and impeccable. Mr. Miyake speaks fluent French which is very appreciated. He can also lend you his old bikes if you are not afraid to make some effort in the climbs!

The apartment is very spacious in western style (sdb, separate toilet, washing machine and kitchen equipped) It is very well located 5 minutes from Honmura harbour in the east of the island.
