Gorgeous lodge with fabulous hosts. They were so patience and kind. The breakfast was yummy both Japanese and western. It was immaculate and so comfortable. It is close to the lifts and the centre of town.

Brilliant lodge.

Very pleasant and helpful hosts.  Convenient location to restaurants and onsens in town. 10 minute walk to Nagasaka Gondola which gets you warmed up and ready to go.  Great drying room for ski gear.  Good breakfast (choice of western or Japanese).  We invited 6 friends for dinner (24 hrs notice to book) and it was very enjoyable.  Beautiful food at reasonable price and we took our own wine.  There is a beer vending machine on site. We had a twin room with no bath/shower just a toilet and we used the hotel hot baths. Would definitely consider staying again at this lodge in the future.

Enjoyable Stay and Excellent Dinner

We had a great stay at Lodge Matsuya. Our host was very helpful and attentive to our needs. She helped us get discount lift tickets for the ski hill and directed us to the best of the public bath houses.  The lodge has a big drying room for ski gear and the heater and blankets kept us plenty warm at night.  There is even a beer vending machine in the lobby!

Great Hotel minutes from Onsen and Ski Hill

Matsuya lodge is in a very good location, close to the center of Nozawa Onsen town, and an easy walk to the main gondola. The rooms are a bit basic and styling is old fashioned, but if you can get a good deal on a room (I probably didn't get the best as I booked last minute) then it's probably an option for the budget conscious traveller. There is a hot bath on site which is where you'll be showering, and the breakfast is to a good Japanese ryokan standard 和食  The hotel staff are efficient but not as friendly as some I've met on my travels in Japan.

Budget Ryokan

We had a great stay at Matsuya! The family are so lovely and helpful and the rooms and facilities were spotlessly clean. It's conviently located a 10 minute walk from the Nagasaka Gondola and 1 minute from the main street.

Excellent value!

This is a very basic lodge. The price is certainly low enough. The staff is helpful in arranging ski rental and in recommending various onsen (hot springs) in the town. Breakfast is simple but nourishing. The main problem is that although there is a common lounge area, it is poorly furnished, and is too cold to sit in. So you are not likely to meet other guests here. The other problem is that the low price attracts a lot of young Australian skiers who are loud and rude. They need to learn some Japanese etiquette. I felt like I was living in a dorm. It's a shame because management is so nice.
