Nozawa Onsen Utopia

Nozawaonsen

A well run  comfortable Japanese style family hotel, 10 minutes walk from the main ski gondola.  Right in the village (known for its onsen or hot springs) near - a few minutes walk - to restaurants, bath houses and the bus terminal.  Excellent breakfasts and optional dinners.  The family who run it are welcoming and anxious to see that all goes well.  Some rooms have shared, but impeccable, bathrooms.  There is an internal bath house (soaking pool) at the optimum temperature of 41 degrees C, and other bath houses nearby.  I'm glad I stayed there and not in a characterless international-style place - the experience was part of the holiday.  (Note: skis  and boots can be hired from Sports Thanx at the top of the path that goes up fro the hotel, and stored there overnight - saves carrying them).  Most people go there by Shinkansen and bus, not by car.

Welcoming hotel, well-run by family, well located in village near ski gondola

It's a time of family fun in this traditional ryokan. A charming welcome, very clean and spacious rooms, comfortable futons, all within walking distance (trails, shops, onsen and restos). A village still authentic, and a very easy destination for family.

Family Skiing in Japan

We stayed in Jan 2020 at Utopia as a family of 2 adults and 2 young kids for skiing holiday. I booked it through Nozawa Onsen tourism organisation online. 

Utopia is one of the long standing establishment in Nozawa Onsen (3 generation), has another restaurant on the ski run, and even a run named after it. The location is excellent. It is very centrally located to the town, and is also close to both Nagasaka and Hikage lifts. Also you can buy discounted lift tickets from them. They also have free parking, but it’s about 5 mins walk away.

There’s a public bath (yu) practically next door, which was my favourite; but Utopia’s own shared bathroom is also very relaxing and almost never seen anyone else in there. The place is very clean and neat. The room is warm in the middle of winter, almost too warm that I had to slightly open the window at night. Futon is reasonably comfy, you can put multiple layers, heaps of space for the whole family, although by the end of the week I missed Western style bed. You don’t have to roll it up everyday also. The room is serviced every 2 days. 

We also used the public living area downstairs every night to relax and made hot chocolates. There is also a bar, but we didn’t use it. Breakfast is alternating serviced Japanese (so good) and Western breakfast along with continental spreads that you can help yourself to. We also had shabu-shabu dinner there one night, which you have to book the day before, which was yummy, good value, and generous. There are also two washing machines that I utilized heaps, although had to dry the washing in our room. 

The owner and staff are very warm and friendly, going out of their way with any requests, and didn’t mind the kids being noisy. They even gave us a packet of Japanese rice that they grew themselves before we left. Thank you!

Warm and comfortable

We liked everything about Utopia!! We were looked after very well. No request of ours was too difficult to meet, including booking us a taxi to take us to the snow monkeys and booking us in, and driving us to, a fabulous okonomiyaki restaurant. I will definitely stay here again! 

Hospitality plus

Utopia is fantastic! My husband was sick on arrival and they sent miso soup and electrolyte drinks up to him. Very central and very knowledgeable and helpful. Rooms are clean and the Onsen is practical. Breakfast is an amazing Japanese spread every day as well as continental buffet if required. Definitely recommended.

Snow trip

Wow, what a treat. We had only a quick stay in Nozawa Onsen planned on a long ramble around Japan and this hotel was great. Our only regret was not staying longer. We visited during an un-busy time so had the hotel basically to ourselves. The room was huge and the most comfortable futons ever. We were welcomed with an easy check-in and tips for local area including the 13 free hot springs in the area. One is less than a 1 minute walk away. The hotel was in the heart of the village area (or one of the hearts) so lots of shops and restaurants around - many were closed for season but regardless, plenty to amuse you on a walk. The proprietor also provided an extra snack and coffee in the morning as we woke too late for normal meal and also let us leave car for a while so we could stroll around. All together, a great comfortable, unpretentious, welcoming Utopia.

Utopia Indeed! Personal Service, Comfy Room and Village Setting

Firstly, thank you Kaori for your kindness and genuine hospitality. You, your family and staff made us feel very welcome and no request was too difficult.

We stayed 10 nights in February 2019. What a wonderful place to experience all that Nozawa Onsen has to offer. Our room was warm (as were all common areas), large and full of light and of course spotlessly clean.  The lodge is quiet but extremely central to the ski-lifts, restaurants and local onsens. 

Breakfast is delicious with a choice of Japanese and Western.

There was nothing we did not love about Utopia and if you are a first time visitor and slightly confused ( we were) as to where to stay look no further. You will not find better.

Nozawa Onsen is a unique traditional Japanese ski village. On the weekend full of Japanese families, local couples and teams of universities and school students. 

The local onsens, which the town is famous for, are a must do.  Be warned they are ultra hot but the locals usually don't mind you adding a little cold from the  tap, which i sat very close to. As a courtesy check to get the nod of approval before doing so. I visited 6 and I think there maybe 13. 

The tiny restaurants should be pre-booked several days in advance. Usually they are also family run. We had fantastic food and great experiences at a very reasonably price.

We will return to Nozawa Onsen and Utopia in 2020

Utopia - "a state of things in which everything is perfect".

We have been going to Hakuba for the last couple of years so this year we decided to also spend 3 days in Nozawa Onsen and stayed at Utopia which was fantastic.  Kaori and her family/staff go out of their way to look after you.  The rooms are a great size, they are warm and cozy and the japanese beds are very comfortable.  Bathrooms are shared but they are very clean and comfortable and on every floor and you shower in the onsen room on the ground  floor. Location is great - Its a 1 minute walk to the main street, a 5 min walk to the gondola and there is one of the many public onsens literally opposite the hotel.  They have a fantastic little whiskey bar in the hotel with lots of japanese whiskeys to have a quiet drink before going out for dinner.  It was a lovely cosy place to come home to after a great days skiing on the mountain.  Thank you Kaori, we will be back!

Fantastic Japanese Ryokan

Honestly the best place in nowaza to stay, caters for both traditional Japanese menu or western style breakfast. Both are terrific, the rooms are very warm and comfortable and it's located Central and easy to get up the mountain or down to the main Street pubs. But the best part is the owners, they went out of their way to make our stay special, even ironing a shirt for me when I asked for an iron! If you go to nowaza, stay here!

Amazing place with EPIC STAFF!

I cannot say enough wonderful things about Utopia. The family is so kind and helpful, the accommodations are clean and comfortable, the food is delicious, and the sake is amazing! Definitely go for the Japanese style breakfast. You won’t be disappointed! I highly recommend!
