A friend and I stayed here for a week to ski in mid-Feb. Located about 10 mins walk to the main gondola and less than that to get onto the high street, Blick Uchidaya is well situated in Nozawa Onsen. The hotel is comfortable with very accommodating staff, a decent breakfast each morning and its own mini-onsen in the shower room which I made good use of. We booked through Nozawa Holidays, their offices are a couple of minutes around the corner so that made for easy equipment rentals and general enquiries. Even though you could be closer to the slopes and the centre of town, I'd still recommend Uchidaya for it's simple comforts and family feel.

Great little spot

Stayed here for six nights and had a great time! The breakfast was good, we found it easy to check in even though we arrived quite late at night, and the hosts were very welcoming. Hotel was very warm, had a washing machine which was very useful, and service was good.

Snow Visit

I stayed here 6 nights which I booked through Nozawa Holidays. The place was very good value for the price. The hosts, a local family (in which every morning we were greeted by the elderly couple), and guests being both foreign and Japanese. The place is very quiet during the week once all the Japanese headed back to work. Very clean room with ample storage, a sink and a toilet. We stayed on the fourth floor so a bit of a climb each day but they have a butler's pantry for your luggage (therefore no need to carry luggage up four flights of stairs). Wi-fi worked very well (a godsend!). TV is only Japanese channels nonetheless my daughter enjoyed watching a Japanese game show one night. Breakfast was from 7:45 - 8:45 am (which is fine as we were there to ski and not to lounge around). Breakfast consisted of the western staples - toast, cereal, fruit, coffee, tea with an omelet of the day as well as some Japanese staples, rice and miso soup. There was a small lounge area with a fireplace and a vending machine (for that needed apres asahi beer). The location is not too bad; a short walk to Sparena and the Karawasa slope and just around the corner from Nozawa central (Nozawa Holidays' headquarters). Although we walked to the Nagasaka ski slope every morning as we rented skis with a ski locker on that side of the mountain. The place is a bit out from the main town but we enjoyed the leisurely stroll each evening and Welcome Blick provides umbrellas for those snowy nights. In addition the owner was very nice to provide us with a lift to the bus stop on our last day which was very much appreciated.

Great stay and great value!

I arrived in a snow storm which made for great skiing!! Because we arrived so late (3am) the staff had naturally retired for the night. They left my key and clear welcoming notices for me to find my way. I stepped into a warm and cosy room and slept like a log on the comfortable futon. Every morning we were severed a breakfast (Western or Asian) that sets you up for the day and at night you can soak in their private onsen. Skiing facilities are within easy walking distance. BU is like home-away-from-home, while still being able to experience the unique culture - the reason I travel after all. This will be my accommodation of preference in the future! Thank you BU, I had an amazing holiday!!

Blissful ease

Our first time to Japan, and the first in Nozawa Onsen. First things first for those in a similar predicament - Onsen means natural spa town, so prepare your luggage to include swim wear as if you are there for the skiing there no better way to relax your body. Also be mindful that the Onsen's are male OR female only in the main. There are two (as I recall) in the town that are mixed.

Ok, back to the holiday. We made a HUGE mistake of flying with Jetstar. If you want to start your holiday in a positive frame of mind pay exactly the same amount and go with Qantas and know that you will get exactly what you need...ie food and water!

We arrived at midnight and someone had helpfully placed a sign on a chair telling us that our room was unlocked and ready for us. Perfect for tired travellers.

On getting to our room we were somewhat taken aback at the lack of anything in it. No curtains for a start, so if you're a light sleeper like me then don't expect any sleep past 0630hrs. Also don't expect a bed. You get a roll mat type of thing with a rice filled pillow. You then find yourself looking around the place for extra roll mats because you know your back isn't going to get used to this after your king size at home.

We had an upgrade whereby we had a sink and mirror in our room, and a small toilet attached. Most rooms shared the toilet, so prepare yourself. Also the showering was only allowed at night. It was down in the shared onsite onsen. We had an issue with people not understanding that if the door was locked because my girlfriend fancied a shower without an audience. One old guy unlocked the door (one of the staff) as some others wanted in and got an eyeful that neither he nor my girlfriend were happy about!

They only open the onsite onsen from 1600-2200hrs each day, so don't think about waking yourself up by having a shower because it ain't going to happen!

The food (we only had breakfast) was basic, but enough to keep us going. It was also their version of Western food. We noticed that the table that had natives were served something completely different, and perhaps this might have been fun to try once.

Location wise it was pretty good. If, like us, you have to hire your equipment then it's only about a 2min walk to the 'Central Rentals' which was handily en route to the slopes. Therefore we left our kit in there each day and picked it up the following morning, saving us from carrying it just that little bit further.

All in all it was a great trip, but my back hopes that next time I find it a bed!
