Homely pension run by Carl and Wakana, who cook delicious and healthy meals. Located just outside Zao Onsen, once-in-life time experiences can be arranged and led by Carl - snow shoeing, trekking to icefalls, hiking to extraordinary shrines.  And all with Carl’s Scottish sense of humour!

Wonderful location for adventures

We had a wonderful time with Carl. Never a dull moment at Brown Pension. From the warm hospitality that both Carl and Wakana provided, we had enjoyed a fantastic 6 nights with them. Wakana is an excellent chef, pampering us with her own unique dishes every day. And Carl is so full of energy and always carrying a positive vibes when he played host to us.  Together, they have both done an excellent job in maintaining a very well kept cottage. Definitely a must stay if you want to head over to Zao Ski Region. 

Never a dull moment!

Outstanding hospitality with excellent food, long trail guiding, evening massages arranged, comfy beds and chauffeur driven everywhere. Carl and his family did everything to make our stay exactly as we wanted it.

3 day snow monster trip

I was part of a group of 6 ladies that stayed at Pension Brown and it was a truly fun and memorable experience. Carl and Wakana san are delightful hosts and no attention to detail was spared. Carl shuttled and guided us around Zao while Wakana san prepared us the most amazing, indulgent food. Thank you for the laughs and your warm hospitality - we will never forget our stay with you!

A wonderful stay!

We truly enjoyed our stay at Pension Brown with the great conversations, excellent food, comfortable accommodations, countless onsens and majestic mountains.

We had great fun and hope to return again one day.

Amazing Stay

This was my third stay at Pension Brown over the past two years.  Two in the winter ski season and once in the summer.  There was the same high standard of food quality, comfort, service and cleanliness on each visit.  Carl and his wife are delightful hosts.  Lunches and dinners varied between European, Japanese and Asian, we never went hungry and enjoyed all the meals.  Zao Onsen is a great place for skiing, it has a variety of slopes to suit most tastes.  It has a quiet laid back charm and the onsens are brilliant.

During the summer it’s a great base for hill walking and visiting all the regional  attractions.

Very Memorable and Amazing Stay!

We loved our time in Zao Onsen, truly one of the most unique ski resorts out there. Staying at Pension Brown with Carl and Wanaka was exactly the type of experience that we were looking for. Carl went above and beyond as a host, taking us to different onsens every morning and evening, giving us a tour of the slopes and sharing his insights on Japanese culture. Wanaka’s cooking is phenomenal - a three course gourmet meal every night. The house itself is super cosy and warm - we felt right at home. We had a great time here and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for something authentic and memorable.

Very Memorable

One of our best ski vacation in Japan ever with fantastic hosts! The pension is immaculately clean, cozy and so homely-filled with interesting decorations. The beds are super comfy too. Carl has a great knowledge of the area, showing us the local places of interest, best ski slopes and onsens to soothe our muscles. Wakana's gourmet dishes served on elegant china makes every meal a luxurious experience, especially the sumptuous 3-course dinner. Including the yummy complimentary afternoon tea, we were all so happily well-fed :)  
Can't wait to come back for another staycation in spring or autumn for fishing, mushroom gathering, truffle hunting, forest bathing or simply relax from city life. Highly recommended for an awesome boutique and epicurean holiday.

Deluxe boutique and gourmet Zao stay

What an unforgettable ski trip! We really enjoyed staying at Pension Brown. Our meals were well prepared by Wakana and the food was delicious with high quality like you are sitting in a fine dining restaurant! Apart from getting breakfasts and dinners, you also get complimentary afternoon tea when you return from a long day skiing, so you will never get hungry! Thank you Carl for taking our big family group everywhere, showing us around the ski slopes and took us to the nearby onsens etc. 5 stars customer service! 
The property is very clean and comfortable to stay. Highly recommended for others. We will be back!

Cosy Accomodation with superb food and friendly hosts

Carl and Wakana were amazing! Picked us up from the bus stop and took us to and from the mountain each day. Carl even gave us a tour of the slopes & took us to local onsens. The food was absolutely incredible!!! 3-course dinners with homemade icecream. We loved the complimentary tea and cake in front of the fire place after a day skiing. Highly recommend staying here!
