We've never experienced such friendliness and care before. Marina-san is a cool and energetic person, and her staff members are no different. The staff did above and beyond by anticipating all our needs and helping us visit many local attracttions. Kura Guesthouse is unique in how it connects the travellers to the local community, so almost every night we got a chance to meet young local people who come to the guesthouse just to hang out and practice English. Marina-san and her staff are the most amazing hosts we ever had. Every night we talked for hours with them and with other guests. The guesthouse is very accessible, only 40 minutes from Nagano by convenient public transport, and the local towns Suzaka, Obuse and Yudanaka have so much to offer that we felt like we just want to explore more and more. We stayed at Kura for 6 days, did nature hikes, saw beautiful temples and waterfalls, visited art museums and nice cafes, and there's still so much more to see that we couldn't fit in 6 days! Plus, there's a cafe run by Marina's mother and lots of tasty food at walking distance.

The best guesthouse in Japan to meet locals and fellow travellers 

The owner and staff were always friendly and helpful including advice on the many local hiking trails. Very relaxed atmosphere making it easy to meet fellow travellers, staff and locals. The Japanese style rooms we’re comfortable and it has an excellent onsite cafe open Friday to Sunday. I stayed for 6 nights but will be back next year for a longer stay as such a great base to explore the area.

Home away from home

Guest House Kura was incredible. We were originally booked for 4 nights but ended up staying 5. We just didn't want to leave. Marina and Yuuri are outstanding hosts and the atmosphere is warm and friendly. The house is over 100 yrs. old  and is a classic Japanese home with sliding doors and tatami floors. A piece of Japanese history.  The little café attached to the guest house, La Vie Lente is run by Marina's mom and serves the BEST Tart Tatin we had ever had and doubles as a communal dining room in the evenings. Just charming! One of the best things about staying there is returning at the end of the day and spending the evenings chatting with Yuuri and Marina and the other guests in the lounge. It truly feels like home. Any barriers of language and culture between guests from all parts of the world are quickly forgotten as you get to know each other. Don't miss out on this wonderful experience. Priceless!

Hidden Treasure in Suzaka, Nagano Prefecture

Marina and Yuuri run the most incredible gem of a guesthouse! Kura has a great location in the town of Suzaka - with great access to Nagano, Shiga Kogen and the Japanese Alps.

They are fantastic hosts, always full of enthusiasm and the nightly dinners were a highlight! I stayed for three nights in total and had three exceptional Japanese meals, all home cooked fresh as you could ask for. Make sure you try one of the local craft beers they have on sale, the IPA in particular was delicious. 

The rooms are super comfortable and traditional, with cosy futons and sliding doors - the building is over 100 years old and has bags of character.

I couldn’t recommend this place more highly - oh and it’s also fantastic value for money. 

Thank you for two awesome stays and hopefully see you again for some skiing in the winter!

Amazing people and a beautiful, traditional Japanese guesthouse

We had a great 2 nights stay at Kura Guest House. Oga-san is a very cheerful lady and she made sure we had a great stay at the house. We had to leave early before everyone wake up to catch the train back to Tokyo and to our surprise she left a written note at the front door for us. This made us smile the whole walk back to the station. Suzaka is a lovely town... Which easily became the highlight of my Japan trip. Would love to come back and stay.

Lovely City Lovely People

This guesthouse was a lovely experience  Very warm and friendly  We were given easy directions to get from the station  There were resturants nearby. Host went out of her way to show us around the next day as we happened to be the only guests the first night Although close to the road it is not busyand bedrooms are to back so very quiet

Lovely experience

We had so much help from Marina san in arranging our stay albeit for one night, both with travel possibilities and places to ear. We were rather worried about sleeping as it was so cold but Marina had thought of everything and we were super warm with a hot water bottle that stayed warm all night. The paper walls were not a problem as the guest house was not very full. Such a memorable experience.

True Japanese experience

Lovely place-a traditional building that was restored as a guest house. Friendly and helpful owner and well suited for back packers with a kitchen, laundry facilities. 
Quiet town with not much open at night and guest house asks for lights out at 11pm as walls are paper only. Was lovely, the only    (BIG) disappointment was how early and how noisy staff were in the morning-especially for the general politeness and consideration of Japanese!
