This ryokan is absolutely not up to the level of hosting people. Nothing is pleasant about it. Located just across the street from a railway track (no trains at night), the overall cleanliness of the place is catastrophic. It's just if the litter is clean. The common parts reminiscent of a party that would have slipped away and where all the guests would have sacked the hotel. The person who received us lives in very questionable hygiene. He has to do something, but in the meantime, the place is to be avoided urgently.

A Big Mistake

The first impression on the way home is the right one: run away! There is such a mess in the lobby/reception, that I thought I was mistaken for a building when entering (see photo). Lines on the floor, cartons, papers, books of all kinds, that are dragging around... spoiled and dirty common parts, stained carpet. The room, although large, deserves to be refreshed. Bed linens and clean toilets. General cleanliness to review. Hotel booked via an internet station specialized in room booking, it was rated 7.3/10. In short, I should have checked before on TripAdvisor!!

I'm going to avoid it.

I have stayed in cheap hotels in Japan before, but this one just isn't even worth the low cost. 

his hotel is in a nondescript building which can be difficult to find at night without google maps. When I got inside the "lobby", I was surprised how messy the "living room" was. Well, I thought it would get better when I got to my room but it didn't... While the room is spacious, things are quite old. The walls and toilet showed signs of wear and tear. The toilet had a strange smell which was masked by the heavy toilet freshener scent. But, at least things were neat inside the large room.

I decided to have a bath in the onsen on the 1/F, but after my shower rinse and got inside the onsen, I literally jumped out. I don't even want to know when the last time the onsen was cleaned! There was a layer of scum on the rocks and when I went inside the onsen the scum gets stirred up. I was horrified - especially when I know that this is Japan where things are generally kept very clean. I needed another proper shower after that.

Location-wise this hotel is right next to Ritsurin Gardens but it is 30 minutes by foot from JR Takamatsu Station, so it is actually not that convenient. It is also 10-15 minutes to the nearest bicycle rental. 

The train line goes along right outside the hotel so you do hear the train till quite late at night. Light sleepers will definitely need ear plugs!

So unless you have no other place to stay, I would choose to avoid this place. This hotel can certainly do with a big revamp and good scrub.
