This hotel is walking distance from Shin-Yamagata station and also connects to Koriyama for those travellers looking to see the Tadami Line. The hotel is conveniently located with a supermarket across the road and a multiplex on the way to the station. There are other restaurants nearby offering different kinds of cuisine.  There is a biscuit factory on the road behind the hotel which smells good while taking a walk outside. The hotel will offer you umbrellas to take out if you're a guest and also offers discount for Toyoko-Inn membership cardholders. Buffet breakfast is served till 9AM which consists of bread/butter/omlette/sushi/miso/tempura/soba noodles and other delicacies. Rooms are spacious for two people and better than similar hotels in Tokyo. Good place to rest after a long journey.

Great hotel for layover to Northwest Japan

Stayed one night and it is a standard Toyoko Inn which provides a decent nights
stay. The hotel is about two long blocks from the JR Station.There is a grocery store
across the street called Maxvalu for easy shopping.
Easy walk to restaurants at train station and is quite as it is on the residential side
of Yamagata Station. 
The hotel has 11 floors and one elevator.

PRO: Great location - Yamagata Station is only a short walking from the hotel; the room is clean & cozy; a big supermarket is located just across the street. The staffs are very friendly and helpful, and they serve great breakfast.

CON: Apart from the supermarket, there isn't much other shops / restaurants nearby. Toilet is compact.

Spendid hotel near Yamagata Station

We stayed 2 nights to visit the Yamadera Temple at a leisurely pace. 

We chose the hotel as it is a  5 min walk from the JR Station. It is a relatively new hotel on the quiet side of the station, but only a 10 min walk to the other side and full city life.

The hotel is part of the Toyoko-inn chain which provides low cost accommodation all over Japan. The guest demographics is predominately Japanese business travellers but you do meet other worldly travellers.

Staying at a Toyoko-inn you always know what to expect as they are all identical - same wallpaper, fittings,size colour, amenities etc., which means if you are comfortable in one , you will not be disappointed by the rest. Amenities include razor, toothpaste/brush , pyjamas , tea / coffee etc.

The only decision in staying is the location of the hotel with regards of how you travel and what you intend to do.

The rooms are really small, but absolutely spotless and fully functional with all amenities. If you are a 6+ foot - 100 kg westerner , you may find the bathroom a bit of a challenge, but not impossible.

English is well spoken and if you become a club member then the discounts make the stay really well priced.

Breakfast is standard Japanese and there is a good variety.

There are few eating options on this side of the station, but as part of the supermarket over the road, there is an excellent low cost noodle shop open to 10 pm.

Quiet side of JR Station but easy access to city life

When we travel to Japan, we usually stay in Toyoko Inn hotels. These hotels are very cheap and very clean. This Toyoko Inn is right by the train station. It is still quiet. Moreover, I thought it was bigger than the others. Also the rooms. The rooms are well equipped with TV, bathroom and refrigerator. For the price of about 8,000 yen you get a double room. You should be careful to take a twin room because it is bigger. Included is the breakfast, you have Japanese and European options. Unlike Toyoko Inn, it was also more varied. There are problems in the ceck because only English is spoken. You can become a member of Toyoko Inn because you can get free nights.
