We chose to stay in Ainokura instead of Shirakawa-go as it is less touristy. We walked from the bus-top to the Minshuku and it  was such a scenic walk. Everywhere is beautiful - from the gassho house to the golden paddy field. 
The whole Minshuku is lined with Tatami, even the corridor! Our room was huge for the 2 of us. There is a common bath area and toilets are shared (as in most minshuku)
We could not wait to explore the whole village. We walked to every corner and climb  to the lookout point. Everywhere is picturesque!   
For dinner, we had a very big spread of food, including grilled river fish which was very fresh. Breakfast was just as sumptuous.
Owner is very friendly and helpful.
Souvenir was available at the entrance.
All in all, we are very delighted with our stay. Will come again in winter.

We stay here for one night . Very calm and peaceful place ...I prefer here to Shirakawa-Gou .
I recommned to stay here ..not just visit and take a photo .

Very traditional Japanese style house at country side Gokayama  ....

This awesome ryokan is set in one of the most beautiful places in Japan.

The food we were served for dinner and breakfast was so delicious.  It is traditional Japanese fare and is lovingly prepared by the hosts.

The meals are held in a special room around a central fireplace which makes it a cosy place to share a meal with other people staying there for the evening.  

Whilst there make sure you take the time to wander around this amazing township and enjoy the differences in the various traditional buildings.

Breathtaking Ryokan in a Breathtaking setting

Ainokura is a winter wonderland. We arrived in late Dec and it was snowing heavily. The minshuku is very beautiful and clean. Modern toilets and bathroom. The food is fresh and tasty. The room is warm even though it is -6C outside. Towels, toothbrush, yukata, shower gel,  shampoo and wifi are all provided.

My wife and I were there for 2 nights in early April. Having been to Japan several times but always stayed in/near Tokyo area, I wanted to get away from the city scenes of Tokyo to somewhere quiet.  Before going to Ainokura, we stopped by at Shirakawa-go and Takayama and were aghast at how over-run they were with tourists and became a little wary that it'd be the same in Ainokura. But, when we got there, we were pleasantly surprised at how peaceful and beautiful the village was. There were some tourist groups that came through in the morning the next day but they were few in number. Nakaya, in particular, was the farthest away from the entrance and parking lot of the village. So, we were not disturbed by them at all. The room we were at, a traditional tadami-style room, was clean and large--could easily sleep 4 - 6 adults. As others have mentioned, food was first-class--dinner and breakfast were comprised of many different dishes made with fish (sashimi and fish roasted on the hearth in the middle of the common room) and mountain vegetables as well as soup, salad, dessert, etc.  For the dinner second night, hosts prepared  different dishes, including a dish made with Hida beef, a special beef of the region. Another thing I was a bit wary about, before going there, were the fact that bathroom facility was shared among the guests and how clean it was going to be since it's the country-side after all. But because there are only 3 rooms in the house, there weren't that many guests (6 people total each night) to share it with. Toilets were super clean and hi-tech like elsewhere in Japan.  Bath and sink areas were separated and we didn't experience any trouble using the facilities. In fact, we didn't run into anybody while we were using the bath/sink/toilet and were able to use them in leisure.  The hosts were constantly and unobtrusively going around making sure our futons were made (there were even electric warmer inside the futons -- because it in the mountains in the middle of the "snow country" it was cold, even went below freezing at night), kerosene heaters were topped off, water-heater for tea or coffee was full, etc. I felt like I was at a country-side home, not a guest at a hotel. It even had a high-tech massage chair, to boot. We were so enchanted by the place that on the second day, we decided to stay around and do nothing in particular.  We strolled around the village, went up to the vista point, took some pictures, had lunch at the village gift-shop, came back to the lodge and relaxed in the massage chair, took naps, etc. It was truly a memorable experience. I couldn't recommend Ainokura and Nakaya more.

Everything I was looking for

We spent one night in Ainokura. We booked at Nakaya from the Gokayama tourism office. The price of the night per person is quite high (9000 I think), which includes dinner and breakfast. We were very well received. The room is huge, the yukatas are provided and your host prepares your futon for dinner (at 6:30pm!!!) This one is very complete and typical of the area, really very good. On the other hand, breakfast (in Japanese) is much less good. A little more: onsen burning on a cool night is perfect!

Authentic and unmistakable

We were trying to get rid of the crowds of Shirakawa-go and decided to give a try to this little village about 40 min by bus from there. Lucky we !!!! A small village in the mountains, with some Gassho houses, among them the Gassho Minshuku Nakaya where we stayed for the night. Beautiful and charming house, cozy rooms, wonderfull food, very nice lady welcoming us, preparing the rooms and the food and even giving us a ride to the bus station when we left (if you go by bus it drops you off in the road and we have to walk for about 10 min to the to get to Nakaya) It had been snowing the previous days so the landscape was perfect...mountains, trees, a cottage surrounded by the snow....It was a very unique experience and definitely one of the high lights of our trip in Japan.

What a wonderful stay...

The village of aenokura is small but sublime surrounded by mountains. The welcome of the owners is warm, the dinner was juicy, and the atmosphere is perfect. You can warm yourself in their bathtub, then after dining around the fire with the other guests, the owner will tell you the local folklore, in Japanese, but he prints the explanations in English.
