We stayed here for a night and it was a real magical experience. My partner and I wanted an authentic ryokan experience for our trip in Japan and read about Kinosaki Onsen town on reddit. 

So glad to have found this cosy and quaint ryokan! It's pretty easy to navigate the area around this ryokan (they give you a map to all the onsens and the ryokan's location is pretty convenient and really close to the main river). 

The room we got was pretty big for the 2 of us - with a wardrobe, hangers, sink, bathroom (with no showers since you'd be onsen-hopping most of the time there), vanity area and futons to sleep on! 

When we arrived they had prepared green tea for us and presented us with origami umbrellas as gifts! We were also given an all-access pass to the 7 public onsens in the town and yukatas that we could wear when we go onsen-hopping. 

We also arranged for a Kanizukushi (Crab Kaiseki) course for dinner which was an amazing feast with fresh seafood and snow crabs. If you're looking for a wholly authentic Japanese experience, I highly recommend this place. 

It's even better in winter - We came at a perfect time - it snowed heavily overnight and we woke up to a winter wonderland. (Just prepare yourself as you may get snowed in and expect some delays with train lines if you want to come here in winter!)

Authentic Ryokan Experience with all-access to public onsens

Great experience

Stayed at the Tsukimotoya Ryokan one night after a few days in Tokyo and Osaka. It felt like travelling to a whole new different world! As soon as we stepped out of the train we entered a sweet and calm little town where you could feel the lack of busyness and hear the birds singing.

The Tsukimotoya Ryokan offers the real Ryokan excperience where the rooms are large and spacious with tatami flooring and traditional Japaneese decoration and furniture. Separate wc and sink and a fridge. When entering a Ryokan for the first time you take your shoes off and slip into traditional "slippers" available for all guests for indoor use. When accompanied to your room you then change into your traditional Yukata available for your stay. A Yukata is like a cotton coat similar to a Kimono and very comfortable. In Kinosaki Onsen you wear your Yukata during your entire stay and you will see other guests, at all Ryokans, will also wear their Yukatas walking the streets to/from public Onsens. 

I highly reccomend to have all your meals at the Ryokan while visiting a Ryokan for the real experience. It is almost impossible to describe the dinner and breakfast we had but let me just say it was the most amazing food experience I have ever had. It is just so fresh, of high quality, very traditional and very autentic. The service at the Tsukimotoya is simply just perfect. We felt like royalties during our whole stay. 

Kinosaki Onsen is a small town where you can walk around in the streets - everything in walking distance. I can highly reccomend a night or two in this amazing little town, especially in combination with a city-stay so you can feel and see "both sides of Japan". We had a magic experience that I will never forget. 

When you are staying at a Ryokan in Kinosaki Onsen you get a free pass to all the 7 Onsens in town. At some Onsens it is also possible to pre-book a private Onsen. 

Get on the train and visit this charming little town, I guarantee you won`t regret!

The real Ryokan experience

We had a 'somehow' good stay at Tsukimotoya. Ryokan is at back lane, in middle of 7 onsens. The gentleman (owner) tried hard to please. The old lady helped us with the yukata n the futons. The front desk lady spoke minimum English with lukewarm feeling.

Yes the room isn't much, there are some wear and tears. There are a few holes in the sliding wooden doors because guests were careless when they slide the doors. 

Toilet and washing basin are right at the back of our room. Shared Shower is separate on 1st floor which we didnt have a chance to use since we bathed at bath houses. Futons were comfortable. Aircon seem new and were able to warm up our room. We were given 1 set of green yukata to wear during our stay. The yukata set seem new too. They also gave us new towels n handy on 2nd day. 

The dinner was amazing. The presentation was beautiful ! There was so much food. We practically stuffed ourselves with Snow Crabs cuisine. When we thought we were done with dinner, they served us more food - pickles, rice, steak, chawamushi (steamed eggs) and fruit. It was a wonderful dinner. A great experience for us. Do note that breakfast is served at 8 or 8.30am. Dinner is served at 6 or 6.30pm. Our dinner took almost 2hrs!

To justify the meal and understand what you are paying for, we had a tiny bowl at a restaurant in Kinosaki and it cost average YEN 2000 per person.  So the dinner package we had -  could easily cost Yen 12,000 per person.   

What I didnt like about the ryokan is that they gave us plastic bag to carry our towels to the bath houses. Most of other ryokans use a basket bag which was chic looking. They should really buy the basket bags! The living room also has a corner filled with random stuff n really that wasnt that pleasant. Maybe it is not a big deal for you. 

A good Stay!

PROS
- The location is good, in the close vincinity with the third, forth and fifth onsen pool and many shops, 5-10 minutes walk to the rest. 
- Staffs are very welcoming and hospitable. 
- Dinner is great at variety and taste.
CONS
- The place could be a bit cleaner, but not a big issue.

Good ryokan in the middle of the town

Our first Ryokan experience. We loved Kinosaki town. It is quaint and fun. The Ryokan experience was very interesting. The staff here were very friendly and helpful. Their English was minimal but that’s all part of the experience. The food was plentiful and delicious. We had the crab meal since it was crab season. The room was large and nice. It could have been a little cleaner. Some stains on the walls and doors. The futons were comfortable for sleeping. There is not a public bath in this Ryokan but the free passes included in the price for the public baths near by were perfect. It was fun to walk around town dressed in the traditional outfits and visit the baths. A great experience when the weather is chilly. I recommend doing the Ryokan experience especially in a small town such as Kinosaki. There r lots of options for places to stay. This one was average. 

Nice

We spent our first night in this ryokan & this ryokan is pretty old n traditional but still comfy n cozy. The staff or maybe family who runs it were v friendly and hospitable. Food was great and yummy! Love the freshness of the seafood especially crab and prawns. This ryokan doesn’t have their own onsen and we were given a pass to try the 7 public baths which were great.

Traditional and Cozy

We booked one night at Tsukimotoya Ryokan between visits to Osaka and Tokyo.  We really enjoyed our stay.  The location can't be beat as it's right in the middle of town and close to most of the onsens.  The owner was very accommodating to our requests and questions, and the room was clean and cozy.  The dinner and breakfast were quite elaborate affairs, and I have to admit it was a lot of food, all delicious.  I would highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a nice ryokan at Kinosakionsen.

Great location

We stayed at two ryokans in Kinosaki and this was my Favourite!

It is a traditional Ryokan with the tatami mats and futons (made up while we were at dinner and removed while we were at breakfast!

The ambiance is reminiscent of Shogun but brought up to date complete with the automatic toilet with seat warmer, cleaning spray and dryer - need to learn how to use it!

Both the evening meal and breakfast were amazing. I cannot tell you the names of all the fish, seafood and dishes that we ate, but the meals were extraordinary! We were served countless, yes countless, dishes presented with artistry and skill.

Once registered, at 3 pm (my only complaint!), guests change into a kimono to walk around town visiting the onsen: the main seven are included with registration. The pass is valid from 3 pm to 10 am the next morning. The cleanest hours in my life as you wash at each onsen and of course the hot springs do the rest.

An memorable experience!

Memorable Traditional Japanese Ryokan

During our trip with my husband, we wanted to stay in a typical ryokan and we were not disappointed by the experience! The staff at this ryokan is adorable, the meals served (dinner and breakfast) are lavish and excellent, they allow to taste several typical Japanese dishes. The room is very spacious and as we expected. When we arrived, we were entitled to a tea offered in our room as well as explanations to help us put on our kimonos (so that we can get back to the onsens). We recommend 100%!!
