Nice little ryokan. The highlight is the owner who speaks excellent english and is very eager to help and take photos of the guests. The room was a bit small, could have done with some renovations, but it was cozy and very centrally located (although the town is very small) and close to the onsen. The service was good. The food was average.

Nice little ryokan

Lovely ryoken experience. The owner speaks excellent English and is very welcoming and helpful, although the other staff (while also really kind and helpful) don't speak much English.
A one-night stay is probably enough for Kinosaki Onsen - the town is largely souvenir shops and eating places. This inn offers dinner and breakfast in your room, and you get the full Japanese meal experience. Our room was fine for 3 people but would have been a squash for four. The ryoken has a small onsen, but most people would go out to one of the public ones. Yukata are provided and many people wear them out around the town in the late afternoon and evening.
A great stop in our trip.

Great ryoken experience

Excellent rolyan in kinosaki.   Host Hani too friendly and offered us everything what ever possible to make our stay a life time memorable event.  Just finished the dinner it’s an a life time experience with Komi who served us.  This is the place.  They offered us a private Insen experience and had an excellent hot bath session at he hotel.   All facility is extremely neat and clean and hosts are super.   Always recommend if you are visiting Kinosaki

Excellent rokyan experience in Kinosaki Japan

Hachisuka san and his family were incredible hosts. The food was so elegantly prepared and delicious. Loved the private onsens at night as well as the public ones Kinosaki town (definitely check out onsen #1). Really enjoyed our 2 night stay to make the most of the trip here. 
English only speakers may have a little bit of trouble communicating but overall everything was very smooth. 
When you arrive, they let the ladies choose a yukata to wear the rest of the stay. Hachisuka san is VERY enthusiastic about taking photos for you.
Unrelated but Mr. Bean also stayed here in 2019.

Wonderful stay in a ryokan run for 8 generations

I love staying in ryokan when I travel to Japan, and Morizuya is my favorite one of all time. 10/10 experience, hands down. They have great private family onsen on premises, they're well located within an amazing onsen town, the owner is super amazingly friendly and helpful (and if he's reading this, I hope he knows we remember him and his mother very warmly) and the owner speaks excellent English. The meals were gigantic and well-made, as is common at ryokan, and you eat in a separate private room set up just for you and your family, which is a touch I really like. For a couple bucks, they set you up with an onsen pass which you can use to go onsen hopping around town. 

Kinosaki Onsen is a great town, a bit on the small and out of the way side, which is how I like it. Our room had a nice view over nature, and the dining room we ate in looked out at the mountain behind the establishment.

If you're thinking about going to a ryokan, this is the place to go.

Best Ryokan in Japan

Lovely charming owner, our stay included a tea ceremony, dressing up, very generous dinner and breakfast and onsen experiences. Some improvements would be good, as below.

Highs: 

Dinner was a real experience and a huge amount of food.

The private onsens at the hotel were very relaxing and it was brilliant to have both private sessions and times which were single gender only. We loved the outdoor one. 

Public onsens were great to access with the pass provided. A fantastic experience! 

We also loved getting dressed up in traditional attire, making for memorable photos taken by the very sweet owner.  

The town is charming with lots of places to grab takeaway snacks or a meal. 

Lows: 

Timings- it all felt a little rushed. Meals can only be taken in one of two (early!) time slots and on each occasion came earlier than requested. Breakfast in particular arrived 20 minutes early which isn't ideal first thing in morning. As you eat in your bedroom, the room then smells strongly of the meat cooked at table, which isn't great. It also felt like they were in a rush to have us leave on check out, with a member of staff knocking on the door to remind us at 9.30 (we were packing and well aware of the 10am check out time. Given check in not until after 3pm hardly a quick turnaround for them!) 

Very little English spoken, apart from the owner, so communication was confused and difficult. A guide on the various yukatas left in room (when to wear each rather than just how) and to the many dishes served at dinner would be very welcome.

Lastly, the sleeping mats were very hard and the pillow not good at all.

It's worth saying that despite the above we enjoyed our stay and the onsen experience was a real trio highlight.

Lovely, with a few notes for improvement

My boyfriend and I treated ourselves to one night at Morizuya and we wished we'd stayed for longer. The owner is such a lovely happy guy who will be like your personal photographer during your stay! There were lots of nice surprises to the experience, like the welcome tea and dressing up in the kimono. You are given a free pass for all the local bathhouses which is handy. The hot spring baths inside the hotel are actually much nicer than the communal ones outside, but it's good to experience all of them.
Breakfast was another learning experience and so exciting! The foods are very different to western cultural food and we had so much fun taste testing it all - there is a lot to eat but all very delicious.
Sleeping on tatami mats was a very cool thing we can't wait to tell all our friends about - it was surprisingly comfortable and we can't wait to come back for another stay!!

Lovely owner, staff and beyond perfect stay

This family-owned ryokan is run in such a way that the owners want to make you feel like they're welcoming you to their home. What we liked about this ryokan were:
- the owner himself likes to be present to greet his guests, and even introduced us to his family and children, who were sweet too
- they provided hundreds of kimonos, yukatas and relevant accessories to choose from, even for our little ones, to dress up to fully enjoy the "old Kyoto" experience
- the owner also shared his thousands of toy cars, trains and tracks, that our little one almost didn't want to leave that room
- their kaiseki sets for both dinner and breakfast were in generous portions
- the ryokan room they let us stay in was large, probably large enough for six adults, thus my little ones had a great time running around in the room. The layout was pretty homey too.
- walking around the ryokan felt like an adventure - the entrance looked small, but we didn't realize it was built on a hill! Sometimes we'll pass by a large window facing the streets, then the hills, and some rooms can only be accessed by some steep stairs.
- the option to use their onsen privately from 3-6pm on weekdays, meant that our entire family can enjoy the onsen together without others around. What a great idea! Our little ones were thrilled to dip in their cave onsen! We thought we had to book the use of their onsen in advance, but it was just a case of checking if anyone was inside, and if not, we just had to lock the onsen room and we could have it to ourselves. Maximum of 20 minutes if I remembered correctly.

What we felt could be improved:
- Probably because it was family-run, there was nobody at the reception counter during both our check-in and check-out times. When we arrived at around 12noon, the lobby was dark and seeing nobody at the reception, we thought the ryokan was closed for the day. We had to walk around, ring the bell, shout "hello?" a few times before someone came to help us check in. When we wanted to leave at 12:30pm the next day, we had specifically told the owner that we will be back to take the ryokan's transport to the train station... but the driver took our suitcases and left even though we just passed by him and went to use the washroom! Because there was no one at the reception when we exited the washroom to the lobby, we had to run everywhere, to the kitchen, to the owner's mom's house next door, we couldn't find a single person who could call the driver to come back to get us and our little ones. We weren't even sure if the driver was the one who took our luggages and if he was at the train station, since nobody was there to inform us anything. For all we know, the luggages could be stolen from the empty lobby? We found cleaners and kitchen assistants but none of them knew how nor wanted to help us. We waited for more than 30 minutes and almost missed our train, and a chance to get lunch before our long train ride. It was quite a traumatizing experience. It would certainly be good to at least put a contact number at their counter, if they really could not afford the manpower during lunch time.

Different kind of experience at this family-owned ryokan

April 2019 - My friend and I arrived early to Kinosaki, so we dropped off our luggage just 50 feet away from the station at the Ryokan service (they charge 200 yen to store AND DELIVER the suitcases to MORIZUYA. Definitely worth it).  We couldn't check in until 3PM, so for the next 3 hours we browsed through the many souvenir shops -- warning: there are craft stores here you will not come across in the cities, so it's really good to pop inside and see what they sell.  I visited one that just has wood carvings. They had the cutest wood laser cut cards that i never saw before.  Also ate at a dessert place "FULUCK" run by a sweet couple that made the best matcha ice cream parfaits, rivaling the popular ones in Kyoto and Tokyo.  Anyway, getting back to Morizuya, the ryokan is DIVINE.  Mr. Hachisuka, the proprietor speaks English and welcomed us.  We experienced a western-style tea ceremony where his mother, the elegant Mrs. Hachizuka presented authentic matcha tea and sweets.  We also were surprised with the chance to dress up in Yukata and Kimono from their huge collection -- then took pictures throughout the town. My family members saw the pictures and all commented that we looked like we were in "old Tokyo."  (Warning: Be sure to wear short sleeve or tank top since long sleeves do not look nice in photos.  Also, you should avoid wearing long pants underneath.)  Be sure your plan includes the dinner and breakfast.  I have stayed at several ryokan across Japan and the meals here rivaled those for which we paid much more.  The personal attention and courtesy of the women and men of the ryokan was, in my eyes, what makes staying in Kinosaki so memorable. They really look to giving you quality service even though they are only a 12-room ryokan.  Take advantage of visiting the town's onsens, but if you have time, use the private ryokan's onsen as well (only available to the guests). I went early in the morning on the day we left. I was the only one there. It felt like my own little personal paradise).  They have two onsen and switch it the next day, so be sure to go to one on each day you are there.  Arigatou , Mr Hachisuka and staff. You made the two of us from Hawaii very relaxed and welcome in your establishment.  I will be recommending you to my family and friends, for sure.

Impeccable Service and terrifice location

Kinosaki is such a great place to visit. It’s abt 2.5hours train ride from Kyoto and very easy to get to.
We stayed at Morizuya for 1 night. It’s a quaint ryokan along the shopping street abt 10-15 walk from JR station very easy to get to. The room was very comfortable and has most of the amenities you need. We had the half board plan and dinner and breakfast is in room. Though it was full house it’s very quiet and peaceful in the room. We also get a pass which allows us to visit the 7 public onsens in Kinosaki for free (the ryokan also has its own onsen)
Visitors will be in their Japanese yukata and clogs walking along the streets... wonderful experience!
Morizuya was the perfect ryokan to stay here. We really enjoyed our stay there! The host and staff of the ryokan made us feel so welcomed and made sure we were comfortable and that all our needs (and more) were met. Talk about service! We felt so looked after.., we got to choose our traditional Japanese clothings (from a large collection) bags shoes etc and everything was so personalized unlike the larger ryokans. The innkeeper (8th generation) was so warm and even took photos of us (for us) not only at the ryokan but along the river. We got to visit his mother’s house and experience the traditional tea ceremony... delightful 
The dinners and breakfast was delicious!!! We had the crab dinner which had like crab prepared in 3-4 ways -yums! Breakfast was also so yummy (had the best mixed rice which I concocted using all the beans seaweeds condiments served)

We definitely want to visit again ....
