I left it a little late to make a booking and couldn't get into any of the more central hotels. This one wasn't too far out but, having underestimate the scale of Tsukuba in the past, I took a cab from the station to be sure of getting there.

Tsukuba isnt that old and it felt like this hotel was one of the original buildings Brutalist concrete with heavy^duty carpets and minimal decor. Unfiltered 1960s chic. There was nothing at all wrong with the place. It was just that nothing had been done with it since the 1960s.

Very friendly and helpful check in. Rickety elevator. Line of identical rooms. The furnishings were adequate, the Wifi strong. Certainly no frills.

Walked downtown to meet friends. Not a bad walk. 20 minutes, using a very clear set of directions I'd got at the front desk.

Stayed two nights. Didn't have breakfast there, but there were plenty of convenience stores on the route from the station. Nothing new to report.

Oh, the price was 1960s vintage, too. So, a bargain.

Genuine retro hotel

I had an excellent stay in my non-smoking western style room.

The hotel is well located, within walking distances to the International congress center (5 mins), groceries stores and restaurants (2 mins) and the Tsukuba train station (15 mins).

The staff is very helpful, although the quality of the English vary between staff members. 
The rooms are small (japanese size),  but very clean, with Japanese pyjamas and green tea provided. You may hear a little noise when people are using the corridor.

Wireless Internet service is provided in all the locations (lobby + rooms), although the quality of the signal in rooms would vary depending on the time.

I did not test their restaurant as I would eat outside or store food in the room refrigerator.

It seems that some rooms have extra shelves and storing place (for example for the TV), so it may be a good idea to confirm for it, else you may find the TV on your already small desk.

This hotel doesn't provide luxurious services but what they provide is more enough for a nice stay, with a great value compared to the nearby hotel around the congress center.

In overall I was very satisfied by this hotel.
