Firstly, you get what you pay for. This a rather inexpensive onsen hotel thus don’t expect too much. I consider it very good value for money. Yes, it is quite old, but the owners take good care and are very friendly. The rooms are of good size and clean.
The onsen is super hot！I could hardly take it. They also have a “public bath” outside for which one needs a separate key.
I also had the breakfast, for about 750 yen. It was also good value for money.
As so many other people before, the owner also for free drove me up to the monkey park, otherwise this would have been more complicated.

Nice onsen place for fair price

We enjoyed a lovely 2 night stay here.

The family were wonderful, very welcoming, drove us up to the snow monkey park, gave us advice on what to do in the area and finally dropped us back to the station when we were leaving.

One of us needs gluten free food and the menu was amended accordingly. It's best to give notice in advance about food requirements plus we travelled with our own gluten free soy sauce. The food was excellent, some of the best we had in Japan and you get to eat Japanese style sitting on the floor with your feet under a heated table.

The place also has a lot of old style charm. We had a large, comfortable room with a toilet (heated seat) attached plus the shared Japanese baths were fun, with very hot water.

We arrived in the town around 10,30. Our room wasn’t ready yet so we decided to go to see the Snow Monkey resorts. Our host very gently drove us up there and after we walked down. When we entered the room we were in complete amusement! It was really big had a own balcony a big living room and little sort of zen garden and tv as well ( which we didn’t use )! The two hosts helped me to wear my yukata and showed me the way to the inside onsen! 
The whole staying was a dream, such a calm, quiet e beautiful place.
At the end of our short staying the host took a picture of us and printed two copies. Was really kind of her!

Best place I’ve stayed in Japan ! 

I was amused and enchanted by seeing my name written on a post outside of the Japanese House Hotel, named Andaikan. It was welcoming me to their establishment. The owners are pleasant and attentive, she guided me to my Japanese style rooms. I slept comfortably on a tatami mat on the floor to experience the Japanese culture. The hotel also has a large Spa bath house. Wearing the cotton kimono that I found in my room, I walked to the bathhouse. The spa is fully stocked with shampoo, and all the necessary toiletries

The host was very nice and polite and even put our name on a welcome banner at the lodging location.  We did call ahead to let them know we were delayed in traffic and wouldn't arrive until late.  This place appears to be run by an elderly couple and it is a big task for them to keep up with all of the maintenance and cleaning.  

The place is very clean.  It is also very dated.  It feels like you are staying at a Japanese Grandparents' house.  Tatami mat floors, thick comforters.  We were comfortable but I coudn't spend more than about 6 hours on the bed before it was too uncomfortable to stay.  The other 5 in my family had no problems and slept fine.  I spent the hours I didn't sleep in the 'hot spring' onsen.  They have 2 onsens on the property with one dedicated for male and the other female.  They shift about every 16 hours to allow access to each onsen during your stay.  My wife reported that my daughters were somewhat reserved to enjoy the *no clothing* requirement in the onsen, but they did apparently get over that.  My son had no problems going sans clothing.  We had the onsen to ourselves and it made it easier for all involved as we didn't have naked strangers in our space.  Probably wouldn't have been a problem if we did have other visitors as most Japanese are very discreet and polite. 

I highly recommend this place for families with lots to do in the area.  We did the snow monkeys one day followed by snowboarding in the Nagano area the next.  This place is a good value compared to other on-site onsens.  It is tired but the staff (all two of them) are very kind and welcoming with limited English capability.  We do have a daughter that studies Japanese and that helped a good deal in communicating with the staff.
