Rixos Almaty Hotel 

This hotel was recommended by my travel agent, but I was a bit nervous given some of the reviews on Tripadvisor. We had no issues at all and enjoyed our stay, so I think many reviews are nitpicking. Kazakhstan is not a rich country and generally things in Almaty are a bit past its prime. The hotel was quality built and top luxury and class but is a little past its prime also. I do not think that you will find better in Almaty though, as I said the whole city is slightly past its prime. Some examples of what I mean in the hotel: the carpets in the room are a bit stained but are clean. Some of the chairs in the dining room have braiding around the edge that is starting to come loose. The bathroom tub has a marble top and where it meets the marble wall some of the chaulk has come out so it looks a but tired. But it is clean! The rooms are spacious, the furniture comfortable, the linen comfy, the bathroom amenities generous and nice. Robes are plush. The safe was a bit tricky to use, but if you read the instructions (in 4 languages) clearly, you can figure it out. We had no issues at all with service. Everyone was very friendly and professional. Remember English is their 3rd or 4th language so don't expect staff to be fluent. They are doing their best and they are doing it well. The atrium is amazing and huge. We had drinks and cakes from the Patisserie one evening. We couldn't find a waiter so walked to the bar to ask. Then they brought a menu and the service was attentive. There are fancy shops in the hotel and the gym is HUGE and well equipped. The pool looked amazing though I didn't use it. Kettle in the room an 4x500ml water complimentary daily is plenty! Lots of super markets and places to change money nearby. We had a very pleasant stay and I have no issues with anything at the hotel. It is recommended. All I would say is that while it is central it is a but far from restaurants and shops.
