The staff at Basecamp Wilderness were incredible!  We felt like family and became great friends with all of them.  Our guide Manford was top notch and got us up close and personal with all of the animals.  The chefs Maxon, Alfyio and Joslyn prepared 5 star rated food daily.  Benson the camp leader, Johnson (Restaurant manager), Janet and David (waiters), James and Dan (room attendants) as well as our private security guards Oglala, William, Samuel and Frances catered to our every need.  I couldn't believe the amount of QUALITY staff we had.  So amazing!

Best experience ever!

My wife and I had a great stay at Wilderness. By luck we had the camp to ourselves and it was a great base for a couple of nights. The food was very good and generous portion sizes. The staff were all so friendly and willing to lend a hand in anyway possible. Our guide Manfred accompanied us from a previous camp and stayed with us during our time here which was great. The camp is small and intimate so we could hear chatter from our room of a night, but not a big concern. Thanks to all at Wilderness for a great stay.

A couple nights at Wilderness

Our stay at Basecamp Wilderness in Kenya was truly extraordinary. From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed with warm smiles and exceptional hospitality. The staff went above and beyond to ensure our comfort, making us feel at home.

The accommodations were well appointed and impeccably clean, offering breathtaking views of the Kenyan landscape that we enjoyed every morning. It was a serene setting that enhanced our overall experience.

When my husband and I fell a little under the weather,  the staff quickly made us Dawa tea, a local remedy that showcased their genuine care. These thoughtful gestures made our stay even more special.

The food was another highlight, with each meal being a delightful experience, reflecting the chef's creativity.

Celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary at the camp was unforgettable. The staff arranged a beautiful cake and an intimate vow renewal ceremony under an acacia tree next to a stream. As the sun set, they blessed our vows, sharing so much of their Maasai culture, which made the occasion even more meaningful. 

Our guide Salomon and team members Johnson and Benson truly made us feel like family. They were kind- hearted, professional, and so fun and funny!

At Dorobo Mobile Camp, we experienced an unexpected thrill when the staff respectfully shooed away an elephant trying to join the fun—an adventure I couldn't resist jumping into! The camp offered its own charm, with walking safaris and evenings around the fire creating lasting memories.

By the time we left, it was hard to say goodbye. The staff had become like family, and the sense of community we experienced will stay with us forever.

Basecamp Wilderness isn’t just a place to stay; it’s a place to belong. We highly recommend both Wilderness Camp and Dorobo Mobile Camp for anyone seeking an authentic, heartwarming experience in Kenya. We can’t wait to return and make more wonderful memories with our newfound family.

Unforgettable experience at Basecamp Wilderness! The team here is amazing. We will be talking about our stay and experiences here very fondly for a long time. Hope to return.
The Naboisho conservancy in Masai Mara where this camp is located is stunning. The animal density is impressive. I can say this since we also stayed in the Mara triangle, but our experience here was so much better.
Basecamp Wilderness is wonderful. Our tent was perfect - clean, comfortable beds, great views all day. At night we could hear hyenas, lions, wildebeest right outside our tent. It will thrilling. We slept comfortably knowing the Askaris (Maasai security folks) were around all night. The vegetarian food was pretty good but could improve as we sometimes had repetitions. The soups however, were always on point, delicious. However no complaints really. We were getting very high quality food in the middle of wilderness.
Our game drives were excellent. Solomon who took us on the majority of those was sincere, excellent and extremely skilled. We also went on two drives with Manfred, who was brilliant. His seniority and years of experience showed. We saw an incredible amount of wildlife. Even small critters like mongoose. We saw lions during every drive. Our room attendants were excellent. We had Francis and Amos who were very kind. The hot water bottles, well made beds each time, and clean tents were excellent touches. Our wake up calls included escorting us to the lounge area where hot coffee and biscuits awaited. I love their efforts in sustainability to preserve the Mara and employ locals. Even my booking process and communications with the office prior to arriving were amazing. One of my favorite experiences was listening to the Maasai staff share stories and songs around the campfire. The stories were an insight into their life and culture. It was very nice of them to share.
The only feedback I have is I would have liked to know of the night drives and bush breakfast options in advance to include in our plans. Maybe they mentioned this in emails and I missed it but I’m not sure. I recommend Basecamp highly, to anyone considering them!

Unforgettable and amazing experience at Basecamp Wilderness!

To good to be true…. This place in the wild is sooo much safari as I could ever get. If you think safari , dream about safari this is exactly that!!! Incredible and breathtaking is what it is. The staff are excellent, the food wonderful and the rooms more than you ever could dream off. Then you have the safari guide that finds everything and everywhere even in the night….. respect! So if you really thinking about safari ……. This is it!! With all the luxury you could dream off ……

Exactly as a dream……

We stayed at the Wilderness camp in February 2024 as a couple for four days. The conservancy has limited visitors, the land is owned by the Masai and it is a more exclusive experience compared to the Masai Mara national reserve. This is a sister-camp of several Basecamp / Saruni lodges in Masai Mara (eg Eagle View and Leopard Hill). We booked directly with them and added the flights from Safarilink / Nairobi. From all those camps, this is the smallest and most remote with 5 (luxurious) tents in total plus a community tent for eating. Electricity (solar) available, no WiFi, weak cellphone reception.

The camp has been modernized at the end of 2023. The tent was in top condition, the large bed was great. Hot (shower) water available upon request. All 5 tents have a reasonable distance from each other (around 30m), so you do have privacy. The restaurant-style breakfasts / lunches / dinners have three courses and are great - knowing that you are in the middle of nowhere and they somehow managed to make everything available with limited possibilities. 

You are in the heart of the reserve and in plain nature. The next street / human settlement is 1h jeep-drive away. You will probably come by plane, the airfield (dirt landing strip) is around 25mins drive away. 

Wild animals roam around freely (but usually keep their distance from the camp). For security reasons, the camp is guarded by Masai 24/7 and there is absolutely no danger from any animal whatsoever. The tents are practically Mosquito-free. One evening, a giraffe was roaming in front of our tent approx 40m away. Baboons and Dikdiks crossed our path to the tent. You can sit in front of your tent and observe all kind of animals in the small valley. Birds are abundant. 

You will do game drives and game walks most of the time (the latter with an armed guard and Masai warriors for protection) with a guide (thanks, Dickson!). This is an incredible experience by itself but I am only describing the lodge here.

There is no better way to experience nature and dive in to the wilderness. This unique setting combines a breathtaking natural setting with reasonable amenities (luxury tent, toilets, electricity, water) and a top 5* service. Up to 15 people care about guests in 5 tents including chef, housekeeping, management, waiter, guards, etc. 

All the members of the staff and your guide are Masai and you have the possibility to get to know their culture better. This includes singing and telling stories at the camp fire - and just asking questions! This is probably the closest you can ever get to the Masai culture as a “tourist” and we felt very welcome. Masai village visits are also possible (1h drive) but be aware that this is a bit more touristy.

All this comes for a hefty price - excluding flights, tips, etc. But it was one of the most memorable experiences of our lives - the remoteness, nature, wildlife and Masai culture are one of a kind.

Breathtaking experience in the heart of the wilderness of Masai Mara

Everything about wilderness camp was far above expectations. Starting with the staff, they were friendly, polite and focused on making our experience perfect. We felt very spoiled. Moving to accommodation, the camp has been recently renovated. Tents are high quality and beds are very comfortable. In general, every item is finely chosen to offer a good -taste luxury experience. Last, the guide made our safari experience very special. We enjoyed private tours of the conservation with a well informed and friendly masai local.   He cares about nature and about making guests feel welcomed. Overall, we are very impressed and happy with the wilderness camp experience. Thank you! Alina & Vlad

World class safari experience given by locals

We were extremely lucky to spend 2 nights at Wilderness without any other guests. The camp is small in any case (8 tents I believe), and our family of 4 had 2, so it felt like a private safari. Lions roared around our tents at night, the Maasai guards armed with spears give us comfort. The walking safari in the morning spectacular. We almost managed to find lions by following their trail in the morning dew. The tents are wonderful. The central tent is straight out of Out of Africa!

Our four days long safari which started with two days at Basecamp, one at Wilderness and the great finale at Eagel View are descirbed in our review of Basecamp. We are just grateful for what we saw and learnt and the humourus way everybody connected with us.
