This place was advertised as Luxury but I certainly didnt see it anywhere. I see good reviews and think, was I staying in the same hotel. Our room was possibly one of the worst I have stayed in. The sheets fels as if they were unclean, The couch in the room was full of stains, The bed was unsecure and very noisy, but the bathroom was the worse of all - we had no hot water for the majority of our stay and the hose was leaking on the shower and had zero pressure.  Under the sink was full of ants. The door in the bathroom was absolutely filthy on both sides. We ordered food and I had the burger which was full of grizzle and smothered in what has to be the  the worst tasting ketchup I have ever tasted, It was so bad that I find it hard even describing it as ketchup. Others had beef and they were sure it was goat and not beef as it was so chewy. The pool was dirty as well. Avoid this place at all costs. It would be cleaner sleeping on the Beach.

Filthy Room

My team had a couple of days between meetings and we found the perfect place to relax. The beauty of Lake Malawi is unsurpassed at this location. The staff was capable and willing to please. The price was reasonable. I highly recommend Annie's Lodge to visitors and locals alike.

A great relaxing stay

For western prices. Airco is nice, clean place. The beds are hard, beat up and very squicky. Choose the place for Wi-Fi but there was none for all 3 days. Breakfast and food is good. The Staff friendlyness depends on who is there. Beach is empty, fenced from the neighbour place and fenced from the property therefore for us lacking atmosphere. 

African Luxuary 

We live in Zomba and visited Cape Maclear with our extended family during their visit to Malawi. We stayed 2 nights at Annie's, and really enjoyed it.

I feel like it gets such mixed reviews here because of different levels of standards. If you put Annie's Lodge in America, it would honestly probably not be a place I'd want to stay. My overly-picky, hasn't-traveled-much mother was not impressed. But by African standards, it was really nice. It was clean, spacious, has hot water, air conditioning, friendly staff, and the electricity never went out. The rest of us were all very pleased.

Rooms 1, 2, and 3 can all connect (or not connect, it's up to you) to a central kitchen and dining area, which was really nice for our group of 12. Room 1 has a double bed and a single bed, and was the least desirable because it doesn't have a lake view, no extra seating area, and a very bright light shining through the window's sheer curtains made sleeping difficult. Room 2 has a king bed and a double bed, as well as two sofas in a little sitting area around the TV. Room 3 has a king bed, a double bed (I think... or maybe it was 2 double beds) and a single bed, and also has couches for watching TV.

The staff was all great. We could get waters and soft drinks whenever we wanted at the little restaurant hut, and they were just added to our bill. The included breakfast was very good, as was the chicken and chips (fries) that we got for lunch one day. We went out for a boat excursion in the morning, and before we left I ordered our lunch to be ready at a set time. It was great to come back to the hotel and have lunch ready for us.

The kids loved the pool, and we loved that we could sit by the pool and enjoy the beach view. We also enjoyed the sitting areas out on the lawn for eating meals and having coffee. It is common in Cape Maclear to be approached on the beach by merchants and groups of boys wanting to play music for tips. The Annie's Lodge staff was fairly good about trying to get them to leave us alone, and it wasn't nearly as bad as when I've stayed elsewhere in Cape Maclear.

We are already planning to return to Annie's in December.

Large extended family loved Annie's Lodge

A very pleasant stay. Had a very warm welcome from the staff but the reception we received from the waiters was not so pleasant, it’s like they were in a rush to just get over and done with the orders and on top of  that the fish we had on the first day was slightly going bad. Also when we asked if they had cake for desert the waiter  said no but when we asked for what deserts they had during dinner this waiter said she should check if the cake is still available,this out me off. (Mind you these were different waiters) other than that it’s a great,quite place, the bar man was very friendly. Also would highly appreciated it if management could consider buying a different brand of tomato sauce 😃 and adding a little more variety on their food menus. The highlight of our stay was us swimming during the night, which was very therapeutic. The rooms was very spacious, plus the bed was very comfortable, we had hot water, air conditioners worked properly.
Definitely worth visiting.

Amazing place

I enjoyed staying at Annie's Lodge. The location is amazing and the staff is very friendlyand helpful. The lodge is good, not luxury, however I was not looking for luxury. The room and bathroom was clean, hot water on tap, the bed comfortable, the WiFI worked very well. The food was excellent, and the service was friendly. The bar shuts early, 10 pm, but some other nearby places sell drinks later and are within easy safe walking distance. The beach is lovely and looks like paradise. Certainly there are a few beach sellers doing their thing, but I found them to be generally good natured and not pushy. I would strongly recommend this hotel to travellers seeking a more intimate Malawi experience than some of the more expensive lodges.

nice place

This hotel was advertised as a luxury destination. It was, however, run down and scruffy. Quite the worst hotel we have stayed at in Africa. We are independent travellers who have visited 19 countries in Africa and are not new to tough travel.
