As a woman, who has traveled across the world and stayed in many hostels, I strongly suggest avoiding this hostel. Upon arrival in the evening, there was no one at the welcome desk. Though it’s clear there are many cameras, another guest quickly informed us that no one actually monitors them.  

While making dinner in the kitchen, we made polite conversation with one of the male guests. Though he was not cooking, he stayed there for 45 minutes placing himself uncomfortably close to us, interrupting our conversations. 

Another male guest arrived and struck up conversation. He made various comments about our looks, our bodies and weights, all of which we did our best to discourage. Other men came in and out of the space, at one point becoming almost claustrophobic. We continuously tried to cut off these unsettling dialogues and eat our dinner, but with no luck.

The first male guest then mentioned that he had been watching my movements earlier, he had seen where I had gone and followed. The second made a joke, “misunderstanding me”, saying I was an expert in insert inappropriate language. 

At this point my sister and I felt unsafe and, knowing that these guests would be present in the hostel for the entire duration of our stay, considered leaving.
We discussed with the receptionist the next day. She asked us to name the guests, which I did not want to do as it could leave to increased hostility and aggression. 

She told us she could not do anything else for us and if we wanted to leave, we would not be refunded. We asked if we could speak with the owner who called shortly after. He told me I was not “entitled” to a refund, that he had no control over what happened in the hostel e.g. other guests’ behavior. He said if we went to a club and were harassed, we would not ask for a refund, just simply leave. He told me if I in fact had traveled as extensively as I claimed, and stayed in so many hostels, I should well know then to “keep my distance” and modify my behavior. He said we could have called the emergency number if we felt unsafe but this was his number. He took no responsibility for the general atmosphere of the hostel, which I’d imagine any proprietor would be concerned with. 

He continuously interrupted me, spoke over me, claimed I was misunderstanding his point. Knowing full well I would not be capable of convincing him that while he had many choices (offering certain hours of kitchen use, monitoring the cameras, simply kicking out the male tyrants, refunding to any measure), we had no other choice as women; we merely had to look out for ourselves and remove ourselves from an unsafe space. 

That sealed the decision to leave, forfeiting hundreds of dollars as a result of the owner’s misogyny. We will continue to insist on a refund of some sort. This is not just for the fact that we did not actually stay in the hostel, but because we received no such service as hospitality. A better analogy might be, if you go to a restaurant and the food has glass in it, you don’t eat and get refunded.

DO NOT STAY HERE

we had booked a room for four but we got a small room that looked like a prison cell.  it was directly above the entrance to the hostel, which served as a smoking area and at the same time as a meeting place.  so we didn't sleep for two days because of the noise and the stench went right into the room.  even the hostel itself stank of vomit.  when we asked to end the accommodation, we were robbed of a significant amount of money and no one was willing to understand it - the owner called us liars and sent his wife who brought a baby with her, thinking that we would take pity and hopefully stay in that prison.  absolutely unprofessional and unacceptable behavior.  but a little further we found Hotel Roma which cost even less per night and is several levels away and most importantly has air conditioning.  so if you want cheap and nice accommodation, find Hotel Roma.

Prison

horrible, we booked a room for 4, we got a "prison cell for 2", the whole entrance hall smelled like vomit, every 5 minutes someone outside or inside was yelling and screaming, we had a window above the entrance to the hostel where the smokers used to hang out so our room was like a smoking arena... horrendous desperation and ugliness. During the confrontation with the owner, who refuted everything and said that I would make it up, that it is not true and that it is not possible, and when leaving, he called out to us his wife, who brought her child with her and thought that we would probably be nicer and not leave return the money, this is a terrible emotional blackmail .. I don't understand how they can run a hostel at all ... I DO NOT RECOMMEND YOU WILL BE SERIOUSLY DISAPPOINTED (unless you are young chicks and drunkards / alcoholics, then you will probably like it here)

Horrible experience NEVER MORE

James and staff EXCELLENT, they helped with documents that I needed. I stayed twice and throughly enjoyed nice cosy place, good area upstairs to wash/dry clothes, area could be used more.  Very clean and and comfortable and social.  also veryclose to bus/beach/shops.  Recommend.   Kris

Really cosy place to stay

Really bad place. There´s no air condition so in summer is a living hell. The worst of all is the owner. It´s absolutely annoying, racist and fights with everyone there which makes a real tense environment all the time

Horrible!!

I stay here all the time .highly recommended I would only stay here. James and his staff are the greatest . The hostel is clean and people are friendly . My taxi is always booked and I have a great time here at the corner hostel. With the beach a Stone threw away

Holiday

We came with a group of students... Kitchen big enough to facilitate our needs. Great location- only two minutes to the beach and restaurants! James is a great host... we've been cooperating together for 13 years!!!

Great location and service

Corner Hostel is very clean and has all the amenities you need. Very quiet well insulated rooms, can easily sleep without disturbances from inside or outside unless your roommate barges in. 
The staff are excellent, incredibly friendly and welcoming.

Great place to stay

This hostel was better than I thought. The room was nice and large, and the location was great! 1 minute from the sea! Local supermarkets are very close. Make sure to ask for a private room if you have 4 guests, as although they do not list this, they may be able to accommodate you in a 4 bed room. I would say that the kitchen equipment could be improved, as the chopping boards smell bad, the grater doesn’t work properly and some of the hobs don’t function properly either. 

Good value for money

They say people make places. Well the staff here are amazing. The girls on the desk are so helpful and friendly and James was great too.The location is ideal and the hostel is clean and tidy . I'll be back in 9 weeks time and I am already looking forward to my trip 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿
