We were at Casa Chips 20 years ago and it was still amazing as we remembered. Casa Chips is a super convenient location for all your Barra stops. The staff  was knowledgeable of the area and helped us with all of our questions. My husband and I cannot wait to go back with our family!

20 year anniversary

We stayed at Casa Chips for 3 nights in May. We live in Puerto Vallarta and drove down on a last minute whim. We never visited Barra de Navidad before. Because we took our little Shiz Tsu, we were limited in the properties we could stay. When we arrived, we had to carry our bags up some dangerous stairs. The room was nice and big with a kitchenette and refrigerator and faced the ocean with a big deck. We should have left then as the place was very outdated and dirty. No bottled water, she brought it later. We asked her to give the room a major cleaning, specifically the fridge and deck and bathroom. We went out the next day and returned around 3:00 and the room wasn’t cleaned yet. So she came up and cleaned but not the big clean as we asked. The chairs were dirty and the  railing on the deck had bird poop on it and there was a cigarette butt left from a previous guest stuck in the corner. The next day we went out and returned around 4:00 and the room wasn’t cleaned. I asked if she was going to clean it and she said, “ I cleaned it yesterday, do you need towels or toilet paper?” I said yes and when she came up with those, I asked if she was going to make the beds. She said “ if you want me to “ like she was being put out. We spoke to the owner before we booked and he said everything we needed was there, just ask. Toiletries were 2 little bars of soap. The bar & restaurant that we were looking forward to relaxing in was non existent, instead just a pile of construction rubble.

Nonexistent Restaurant or Bar

We enjoyed a 2 week stay at Casa Chips from December 21-January 2, 2018-2019.  We shuffled rooms from our original assignment but landed in renovated room 10 which along with 9 had small balconies directly over the center of the beach in Barra de Navidad.  Both required 3 stair climbs but we viewed this as an exercise opportunity. 😊 Our room had a lovely cross breeze with doors open on both ends but also AC if necessary.  A little kitchenette provided an opportunity to prepare coffee, snacks and small meals with food purchased in the little markets in town but restaurant choices were good also. WIFI was weak.  My only suggestion to those considering this property is to fully inspect the facilities and appliances to make sure they work.  The owner resides in the states and relies on local staff to maintain these features and anyone who has stayed in Mexico knows that housekeeping staff has a “mas o menas” attitude about their duties. 

Happy little nest above the beach

Staff (they may have been the owners) were very helpful and genuinely seem to want to make sure everything is ok.  I stayed in room #9, and for my preferences was perfect (sun/balcony, internet, fridge and stove). The unit was clean, modern and comfortable.  Good size fridge in the kitchen, great blinds to help with the heat/sun.  The A/C in the bedroom worked very well.  Amazing views and also a great balcony. The wifi was good and there were no issues with noise. A hotel across the street had a band up on their top floor one night but it didn’t play late so wasn't an issue for sleep. I will definitely stay here again if I can get this room. Good toilet paper and they don’t skimp on it.

Small issues - hot water in shower in morning was warm, not hot but was fine for showering. The sheets and bedspread are not very comfortable.  Bedspread is rough on your skin and the sheets are thick - considering you sleep here and sit here if you want to watch tv in the evening it would be nice to have a soft bedspread and perhaps lighter, softer sheets. 

I thought a drain cover for the shower would help with the sewage smell in the bathroom but I tried covering it with a face cloth and it didn't make any difference. I'm not exactly sure where the sewage smell is coming from but it got worse as the days went on. A lounge/reclining chair for the balcony would be nice as well. Also, as someone else mentioned you had to let someone know if you wanted your room cleaned, there was no daily service. These are not big issues but were the only things I could think of for improvement.

Great location

Been here 3 times, unfortunately this was not the best stay. Normally recommend room #5 & still would but room #4 is budget friendly, small but has king size bed, No view. Would not recommend room #6 at all! Large room, kitchen, king bed, couch, balcony & view but the bathroom smelled like the sewer drain itself & room smelled of smoke. The cafe kona is directly above room & was extremely noisy!!!!! If you want to sleep, this is not the room for you. Normally they service rooms daily but had to specifically ask for service & toilet paper this time. Disappointed yes but would still recommend room #5 if I was to ever return again.

Decent

This remodelled building is in one of the best locations in Barra. We stayed a month in the Sky Master Suite and were very impressed. It was our second time. The stove and cupboards had been replaced, plus there were new pots and pans. 

The managers, Damien and Iris, were very friendly and provided for our every need. 

We loved being close to the ocean and within easy walking distance of restaurants and other amenities.
