My Russian girlfriend, her cat, and I arrived in GDL after living in San Felipe, Baja California for six months. In SFBC we were able to secure an apartment in two days, the first to search, the second to move in - probably as easy in GDL, right? Wrong. Took a week of hotel bouncing and we eventually ended up staying at this Casa Canario for four nights! It's a nice hostel with a fully equipped kitchen, pleasant sitting area next to the kitchen AND in the foyer, and the rooms are surprisingly cool despite the GDL heat. The location is PRIME and next to nearby parks, restaurants, downtown - you name it. The price isn't bad either given that you have access to a full kitchen and somewhere to relax other than sitting in your room. You can find cheaper place nearby (maybe $10 USD cheaper?) but they're big corporate-run entities with none of the "good" that this place puts out, and completely without the kitchen or other amenities. The hostess Mariana is pretty bilingual in Spanish and English and was able to help me communicate with the owner of the place in which I currently live. She was also knowledgeable about the area and able to direct me to points of interest and in general pleasant to talk with. 

My girl and I had to wait until 430 pm for the house we're renting to open up and Mariana had no problem letting us chill in the foyer-sitting area until we left around 4pm. 

The only two downsides were relatively minor and entirely incidental. The lower room we had initially secured had some ants, so we were moved to a room without ants. Easy fix and they sprayed for the ants in the meantime. The second was the upper room we stayed in for three nights had a shared bathroom with another upper room. The guest staying there had stomach issues and the doors are very thin so I advise that IF you use the upper bathroom, play some music or something when you're in there.

Lost in GDL!

I made a security deposit of 2500 Mexican pesos via PayPal and at the end of my stay, as agreed, Casa Canario refunded 2000 Mexican pesos. It all seemed perfect, but Marcela, the owner, simply called her credit card and disputed the transaction. The credit card opened a dispute with PayPal and she played dumb all along, like she didn’t know what was happening. PayPal withdrew the credit and my account became negative. At the end she only sent me the attach picture, which basically says that the transaction she didn’t recognize was fulfilled, meaning they proceeded with everything she told it was not legit, including my transaction and I lost the money. 

Don’t believe Marcela, she plays nice just to get your confidence.

CROOK!!! Casa Canario ripped me off on the security deposit

I stayed for 2 months at Casa Canario and truly loved it!!  Not only is it located within the heart of historic Guadalajara but it is also incredibly well-decorated with lovely, exotic plants hanging everywhere.  My room was amazing - very comfortable bed with a private balcony which overlooked the central courtyard.  Every morning as I sat in the balcony, I was greeted by 2 hummingbirds who added to the exquisite charm of Casa Canario.   There are great restaurants located within several blocks - as well as the must-see Templo de Expiatorio.  The staff is extremely friendly and helpful:  Marcella is extremely friendly, polite, professional and always tries to "go the extra mile" for her guests.  She is super attentive and became a good friend to me while I was there and after.  Raquel is also Amazing - she is the "Reina de limpieza!"  She is always extremely friendly and helpful with a beautiful personality.  She helped me in so many ways during my wonderful stay at Casa Canario.  I have travelled all around the world and I must say that Casa Canario would rank as one of the TOP hostals I have ever had the pleasure to stay in!   It is amazingly quiet and peaceful and you will feel as if you are in a beautiful "Secret Garden" tucked away in the historic area of Guadalajara!

A BEAUTIFUL OASIS IN THE HISTORIC DISTRICT OF GUADALAJARA!! (by LUCIANO)

We booked to stay at this hostel through booking.com. A price of $48 was agreed for 2 nights. After the booking, the hostel emailed me 3 consecutive times asking for a deposit of $51 to secure the room. They stated that $51 was half the cost of the total stay. I emailed them back stating that the booking is secured through booking.com and I won't be paying a deposit to them. I also asked them why they are charging double the price on booking.com. I received no response, so after giving them plenty of time to respond I was forced to cancel the booking as I wasn't prepared to pay double the price which was advertised on booking.com. 

They also make you feel as though you are a burden to them when you cannot give them an exact time when you will arrive. Surely they should have someone in the hostel at all times? 

Don't bother with the hassle, book to stay somewhere else.

Poor Customer Service

We stayed two nights at Casa Canario, and must say that we are really disappointed with the service. 

First of all, there is no sign outside so make sure you remember the street number. Moreover, there was no one there when we arrived. This is partly our fault, since we arrived later than expected. So make sure to contact them if you run late, because there is no reception or anyone present in the B&B. 

The B&B is really nice decorated. The bed was good and there is a nice terrace. However, the room was pretty small and there is only shared bathrooms. 

When we checked in we were informed that the breakfast was served from 09.00 - 11.00. However, when we woke up the next morning there was no one there (we were the only ones staying at the B&B). We waited for 2 hours and also tried to call Marcela, but no one came. When she answered our e-mail late at night she responded that since we arrived late (6 pm), they hadn't had time to buy breakfast. They did not in any way inform us about this. Moreover, everything they served for breakfast was already in the fridge (btw, is is only toast, jam and instant coffee, not at all what you see in the pictures). She also refused to compensate us for the breakfast we had to buy and the lack of service. When we finally reached her on the phone the next day she was really upset and wouldn't listen to what we said. It felt like we were being punished for arriving a couple of hours later than expected. 

I'm sure Casa Canario is a nice B&B if everything runs smoothly. However, when there is a problem the service is really bad. It felt as they didn't really know what it means to run a B&B and wanted to work as little as possible. For the money we paid we expected a much higher level of service, and at least the breakfast which was included in the price.

Worst service ever

We stayed for 2 months and loved it!  Very neat, clean and comfortable facility.  Staff top friendly and helpful.  Located in the city center,  close to Expatorio Plaza and eateries.  Walking distance from historical areas and Chapultepec.  Amazingly quiet and peaceful for inner-city establishment.
