This is by far the worst hotel where we have ever stayed in Mexico.
The whole house has a lot of humidity. Throughout the day and night there is an awful smell of waste water coming from the bathroom into the room. At night we had to close the balcony window to avoid mosquitoes and felt trapped inside a dark place with bad smell.  We could not sleep and it was a true nightmare. Bathroom sink was clogged causing dirt to cumulate, something very unpleasant to see everytime we brushed our teeth or washed our hands. Bed clothes old and worn out. Internet access given at check in did not work, we had to get in touch with the owner to request another one. Owner makes sure to charge you by cash before you see the room, when you realize where you are it is already too late to give it up. Even though we had already paid for two nights, we decided to leave the place on the next day after we had checked in.

If you decide to go, go at your own risk, but don´t complain that you have not been warned before.

It’s a nicely decorated casa. We stayed at a 4 single-bed room and were pleasantly surprised by the beautiful arrangement in the room. The room and beds are clean though the shower room is a bit small. Breakfast was nice and the rooftop has great views! It was a great stay!

Cute casa

We had booked the King size room with balcony for 3 nights months ago through a friend who was acting as our guide during our travels round Mexico. (Our friend is a registered professional guide who was accompanying us.)

We arrived at Casa de Pita on the last day of February to find we'd been allocated the Family room - a gloomy cave of a room with, as we found out when going to bed, no hot water in the shower or sink,  ineffective lighting, nowhere to sit except on the bed, and a hotch potch of dusty knick knacks on most flat surfaces. 

For information, there is no common seating area,  other than the roof terrace which closes at 9.30pm and is tricky to access. The dining area is only available for use during breakfast and at no other times. We also had to agree to a long list of 'do's' and 'don'ts' when we arrived which was very unusual. 

We'd hoped for a quirky bed and breakfast - somewhere with personality - but Casa de Pita was such a disappointment.  It was grubby and dusty, poorly maintained and the collection of unusual items found everywhere looked past their best and in need of a clean or replacement. 

Anyway,  after our first night, when I had checked on the internet what room we'd been given and discovered that we'd been put in the family room and not the room we'd reserved,  our friend spoke to reception for us to see if we could change rooms and move into the room that we had actually booked. 

The young woman at reception could not have been less helpful.  In short, she told our friend that we had been given a room with a king size bed; that they allocated rooms at random so it did not matter what we thought we'd reserved; and if we were unhappy that was not her problem. 

My partner and I felt sufficiently unhappy about the place and their response to our enquiry that we decided, with the help of our friend, to find alternative accommodation even if it meant losing money at Casa de Pita. 

We packed our bags and as we were leaving the building the young woman on reception said our friend had been rude to her and then she followed us to accuse our friend of lying about the discussion they had had and our reservation.  It was a bizarre experience. 

Casa de Pita isn't the most expensive of places to stay but 3 nights in a dark, 
uncomfortable room  without hot water in the shower or sink could well have spoilt  our stay in Guanajuato which is a fantastic place to visit. 

I know there are many positive reviews about Casa de Pita and lots of people love the place but it's the worst place we have stayed in on this visit to Mexico. The attitude of the woman on reception was unbelievable, with no apparent concern for guests comfort or happiness. And it's especially baffling given the availability of other places to stay in Guanajuato including Air B and B's. 

I would caution anyone against staying here when there are plenty of accommodations for all tastes and budgets in Guanajuato.

I don't know why people love this place.

Casa de Pita is in a sensational location, just off Plaza Baratillo. It’s 90 seconds walk from the Jardin de la Union, (which is the centre of town).
It has a huge, multi-level rooftop deck with stunning views in every direction. Some parts of the deck are very open and some quite closed in, so it’s useful in most weather.
Our hosts were just great - genuinely friendly and very accommodating. They were exactly the right degree of relaxed and informal for us.
The decor is very individual, locally flavoured, and thoroughly charming. Our room had a compact, quirky living room with a tiny balcony which overlooks the street. There are spiral stairs which lead to a spacious mezzanine bedroom. The bedroom ceiling is a lovely vaulted ceiling made of tiles, with strategically placed skylights, (which appear to be adjustable, although I didn’t try). The bed was very large and very comfortable.
The bathroom is small and pleasant, with coloured glass windows which open onto to the street below.
Everything was very clean. Breakfast was served at a communal table in the kitchen. The menu is fixed but we found that it had enough variety.  We loved this place and would happily stay here again.

Charming B&B with an amazing rooftop deck.

We stayd at Casa de Pita for 3 days. We had the best roon right near the entrance. The door looks like the Hobbit door, thats what we liked so much. Room very nice and comfortable, always clean. You get in 10min walk to the colorfull centre. The staff was very friendly. I had Fever a night and the friendly man at the reception, prepared me hot water so I can took my medicine. After the day he even asked me how I felt if everything is okay. I preciated that very much. Breakfast delicious, you can sit and talk with every guest. Mexico is a beautiful country and they dont care how you look or where you from they respect and treat you always very very good. Guanajuato we will see you  again and of course I will book Casa de Pita :-) 

Beautiful City and People

I stayed at Casa de Pita in May of 2019, staying the in three bed suite in the second floor.  By the end of my short stay there, I was covered in hundreds of bed bug bites all over my arms, legs, and the back of my neck and ears.

I hate giving negative reviews, but this was an exceptionally miserable experience.  It’s incredibly dissapointing that this guest house came so highly recommended to me by TripAdvisor.

Bed Bugs

I travelled throughout Mexico for about a month, visiting 8 different cities. Casa de Pita in Guanajuato was by far the most memorable accommodation experience I had (among some other very good stays in other cities) and this is why I needed to write about it. 
The moment you get in you get transferred back in time to another era.  I had a ceiling room with warm colours, traditional tiles, colourful decorations. The whole place was like that in fact. This is how I, at least, imagined old Mexico.
And one of the most interesting details that adds up to your experience is breakfast. 
Taking place in a very cute dining area at a specific time each day, it provides not just a nice homemade, local breakfast, but also the opportunity to meet with the other residents, exchange ideas on what to do in the city, what to do in other cities that may have already visited, make friends even. As a solo traveller, I found this concept as one of the most welcomed details during my stay in Casa de Pita. 
Finally, while it may be somehow difficult to initially get there, it is practically placed just by Guanajuato downtown, providing easy access to the city attractions by foot. 
A unique place, with unique vibes, that I will gladly choose again.

Best hotel experience in Mexico. Unique place, unique vibes

This place is a bit unusual.  First off, it is not easy to find.  Cab drivers are a bit confused when you asked to dropped off by the Teatro Principal.  Our guy who brought us from the bus station took us to the end of the street.  Not exactly where our notes said to be dropped off but it did work and we found the place.

Check-in was easy - our room was ready.  the fellow at the desk took us to our room.  There are rooms on the main floor, at least one with an outside entrance, some on the 2nd floor right off the kitchen and breakfast area and then two more at the top of the house.  To get to the top rooms, one must climb at least 20 steps on a narrow spiral staircase.  Not possible for anyone with restricted mobility!  And tough to haul up luggage.

Our rooms was at the top.  It was a bit of a chore to get up and down from room.  Our room was neat - interesting furniture and the beds were comfortable.  The extra blankets were required because it was cold at night.  Our windows to the outside were above a pedestrian walkway.  There were a couple of pretty long-lasting parties down below.  We should have gone down and joined in (I suspect we would be welcomed) but it was too much of a chore to get up and down from the room.  The bathroom was very small and the water pressure in the shower was barely adequate.  Also, the hot water took a long time.

Outside our room in the hotel was access to a couple of decks and sitting areas.  Very nice views of the city.

The furnishing in the place was really unique.  Kind of like browsing in a second hand shop.

The communal breakfast on the 2nd floor was really good.  A different item every day with yogurt, coffee etc.  Also, the communal table means that you met other guests - there were folks from New York, California, Monterrey, Mexico City and Canada.  Despite language differences the breakfasts were enjoyable.

The staff at the hotel were excellent.  They went out of their way to be helpful.  We had to leave early in the morning and they arranged for us to be picked up by a cab (in front of the Teatro - a couple of blocks away but as close as cars can get) and they packed us a lunch, yogurt drinks and a gift of candy - very nice touch.

There appears to be a great deal of variation in the rooms.  We saw another on the rooftop that was absolutely magnificent.  

When booking, check out the rooms carefully, especially if you have any mobility issues.

Quirky - in a Good Way

I had been looking forward to our stay here since we made the reservation, based on reviews. Who could not like a place named Casa de Pita?  Pros: Great staff! They are the stars. Great location in town. Nice talking to all the other guests at the communal breakfast table.Scenic view from the rooftop. Cons: On a pedestrian street with people through the night talking, requiring the windows to be closed with a room temp. of 72 degrees F. at night with tabletop fan. Water in shower of variable temp with poor draining tub leaving one to stand in drain water :(  I failed to mention the drain problem to staff. More lighting needed in the bathroom and bedroom. I like fresh ice, the ice in the freezer was an ancient, frost covered mass that needed to broken up for three nights in a row. No one else may care about that!! Steep narrow stairs to rooftop and upper rooms.
