Pros

Cons
- noisy. It's next to a bar and they partied until 4 am. On Wednesday night.
- depends on your room, it can be a little smelly. The owner first showed me the room on the 1st floor and I did not like it (smelled a little bad) so I asked her if there's any similar on the second floor. And she showed me the one on the second. It was much better.
- in Lonely Planet, it is listed as a budget hotel but I do not think this hostal is a budget accommodation.

I liked it overall

My sister had stayed here before so I was looking forward to our stay. First impressions were that the hotel was quite run down. Our room on the ground floor had a large area over mould/dampness over one of the beds. The common area on the roof terrace was also a bit shabby.
The hotel is in the centre of the historic city so we were prepared for a level of noise but the bass line of the techno music from a neighbouring bar was rather more than we anticipated. 
The staff were friendly and helpful but I do not feel I could recommend the accommodation to others.

Very disappointing 

I spent some nights here recently, and I have to say that the place is nice, comfortable and in a good location. Yet, a few things can be improved to make it perfect, and one of them is the price of the rooms. 40 dollars plus tax (16% + 2%) for a double with private bath is just a little too expensive if you consider that hotels of the same level located right in the very heart of the city (Jardin de la Union) charge almost the same or even less! As a matter of fact, most of the rooms were empty during my stay, while all other hotels of the same kind and price had NO vacancy.

Perfect if they lower their prices a bit

This hotel really looks great from the photographs and possibly some of the reviews but in reality its not all what it seems. 

I send my parents there this weekend and the hotel gates were closed at 14:00. My folks waited for someone to show up for 30-45 minutes but no one showed up. They decided to go to another hotel close by in the end. 

What is worst is that I called up the hotel and they still wanted to charge my credit card for the reservation which was unbelievable. 

I would strongly advise anyone to not go to this hotel, mainly due to the lack of professionality of the staff and management. 

There are many other better options of approximately the same price in Guanajuato.

Unprofessional Staff

Stayed at Residencia Mexicana (that's the name on the sign outside the hotel) for a few nights during New Year's 2014-2015. We reserved almost a month in advance through telephone with no hassle. We asked for a place to park our car during our stay and were told that there were some pay-by-the-hour parking lots, but they told us that for $100 pesos they could save us a space across the street with a guy that washes cars there. If you're visiting Guanajuato only, you won't need a car, but we planned visiting other places which required taking the car out. We took the car out on our second day and we lost our parking place. Use this parking option if you won't be using your car during your entire stay. The rest of the stay we parked our car at the ISSEG parking lot across the street, where the Vips restaurant is located.

We were given the room in front of the hotel's reception. We were surprised that the steel door had a "trick" to open, takes a few minutes to master. The door needs maintenance as it is a problem to open and difficult to close as well. Room was spacious and had a private bathroom. Something that is really weird is that the on the other side of the bathroom window there's another room! The window is closed, has frosted glass and the handle has been taken away, but still one can see if the room next door has the light turned on as well as hearing what happens there (and I assume they can hear you as well!). Another awkward thing is that the toilet seat is really small and kind of shallow and if you're a man trying to take a dump either you poo or pee. There's no way to do both while you're seating without getting your manhood sipping from the toilet (weird, I know).

The rate includes breakfast but we didn't try it, so we can't really say anything about that.

Hotel also offers free wifi, but the signal never reached our room.

Like other reviewers have mentioned, our room's windows had curtains but the steel door has a big frosted glass window with no curtain or anything blocking light to get in. Really annoying at night since the front desk's light is always on.

There's a bar next door and is located just above our room. Pretty noisy at night.

Summarizing, if you don't need luxury, if you won't be using your car (or you get there by bus) and if you are on a limited budget, their location is really great. If you're traveling with your spouse and are used to comfort, there are other options I would consider before Residencia Mexicana. Unfortunately we visited during New Year's (which is high season) and couldn't find a better option for those dates.
