We were met with the key to the bungalow by friendly Violeta and provided with free water and some coffee to make in the morning.

Everything was clean and nice. However the restaurant and bar are closed. Be sure and shop for food before arrival.

Of course the Sargassa grass is a huge problem.

Friendly staff and laid back


Small, quiet resort, aproxx 8 km south of Mahahual. 
Run by Italian owner Marco and his Mexican wife Fatima, the resort is a perfect place if you want to relax and enjoy a quiet stay at the beach. 
Positive: 
Super friendly people who do their utmost to make your stay comfortable.  
Simple but good good kitchen (again no frills). I liked the pasta. Sometimes it takes a while, relax is the keyword here.  Nice little (simple) houses but no airco or fan. Sea wind will take the heat away anyway. Showers are cold only. 
Wifi and power only available at certain times. But when available: good strength.  
Reefs are approxx 200m from the beach and have very nice fish and corrals. (Snorkling equipment and canoe available for free).  
All other conveniences are available in Mahahual. 

Less than perfect:
The sand road to it from Mahahual is quite bad. Taxi is possible, a rental car also but we were happy with our rental 4x4. It took us 20 minutes to Mahahual. 
The beach can be full of seaweed, also some pollution as the neighbours don't clean their part. It's dependant on season as it is not always there. The gardenboy does his best to keep everything clean. Other beaches like Tulum have same issue with seaweed. 

Small scale, basic, very relaxed and quiet

Overall, this eco-resort was not what I expected. Some parts were good but in general not a great experience and I would definitely not re-visit this resort. I like to start with the positives. The view of the stars was incredible. The hammocks were possibly the most comfortable I have ever relaxed on. Comfortable enough to fall asleep in pretty quickly. The food was awesome. The puppy was so sweet. I really enjoyed him since I am used to having pets around. The palm trees were mature and very beautiful with colorful birds flying in and out of them. One of the pieces that led to it being a bad experience is one they have no control over. The trash all over beach and in the ocean. It is not water acceptable to swim in that. This resort takes time every morning to clean their portion but when you walk down to the water all you can see is trash covering the entire shore and water for as far as you can see on both sides. Now onto the rooms. Our room had a great view of the moonrise over the ocean. The sound of the waves was very peaceful. However, our sheets were not clean the first night. There a dead bug with blood in between the bottom and top sheet. Also when the toilet was flushed water would leak out of the base and into the shower area. It led to the feeling that the shower area was very disgusting. Our cabana door was very challenging to open and shut. It was impossible to open all of the way and it was extremely noisy since it dragged against the floor. There were also holes in the screens and top. There were holes big enough for a very large (very very large) cricket to come join us one night. The last downside was there was not water available other than going to the bar and asking for a refill. It would be better to have it more conveniently accessible.

Not what I was expecting

I have visited Kabanah several times over the past years. I always enjoyed it greatly - friendly people (sometimes free coconuts), great food, a day of happy snorkeling, eating, drinking, lounging. This time I was sorely disappointed. The beach was covered in seaweed. There wa sa wheelbarrow and a shovel, two guys spent about 10 minutes cleaning and the rest of their time in the shade looking at their cell phones. The food was close to awful. We asked for white wine - no white wine. OK, red wine? No red wine either. No mojitos, but they could do margaritas. We asked, do you make them fresh? Yes, of course. That was a lie, they came from a bottle of margarita mix. To top it off, the bathrooms started out OK, but an hour later both were disgusting - so much so that one of my group felt compelled to clean one before using it. Come for a pleasant beach lounge, end up spending a lot of money for bad quality food and drinks, and cleaning a toilet in the bargain. We ended up giggling a lot and looking forward to another in our list of memories of horrible vacation places. 

The owner was away (I think), the guy who used to do the diving tours has apparently moved to California. The skeleton staff is useless.

Used to be great. Now it sucks.

The diving/snorkeling instructors there are awesome! Super friendly, know the sea and help you where they can. Take you out to the reef on a catamaran.
The beach is cleaned daily which is needed with the seaweed. 
Distant from the rest of mahuahal, you need a car to go there.
