Hotel Monte Alban is an 18th century building with quite a bit of the original wall painting intact and interesting nooks and crannies. Crookedly hung, and sometimes damaged, pictures are on the walls. There's plenty of atmosphere and an excellent view of the square. The location is central to markets in the south and renovated, tourist attractions to the north.

Although this place was advertised on Booking dot com, most of the clientele seem to be Spanish speakers. Advertised as a tourist hotel, it would be nice if someone spoke a little English but fine... it's Mexico. What they could do, however, is provide information. Most hotels provide a printed copy of restaurant hours and scheduled activities. Even in Spanish, I could understand. Friday evening around 10:30, the restaurant suddenly filled with people and there was a band. Another day, I walked in and found a dance class in progress; then, one morning I went down for breakfast and saw (& heard) a man breaking up the kitchen floor with a sledge hammer. Also, as mentioned by another reviewer, the square can be very noisy in the evening, but it doesn't last much past 11:30 p.m.

Payment was another issue. When I checked out, they presented a receipt for the charge to my credit card. It was much more than I'd agreed to, but fortunately I had a print-out from Booking dot com with the correct charges. The woman at the desk seemed surprised, but eventually she refunded the overcharge - in Mexican pesos! Not useful when I was on my way to the airport. It was far more than I wanted to spend at the duty free shops and now I'll have to exchange the pesos for Canadian dollars, which means losing money in the transaction. 


Okay - Not Great

We were surprised by the presentation of the oaxaqueños dances!!! Cost $200 pesos per person, lasted 1 1/2 hours They presented dances from various regions, with different very nice dresses!.It's worth it!!! We ate very late and we were not hungry, we just ordered a bottle of wine at the supermarket price!!!!...Excellent!!

The show of oaxaqueños dances is VERY recommended!!!

I found a cockroach in my room informing the receptionist Jorge García that he behaved very aggressively, shouted, frightened and took away my husband's cell phone, the bartender Mario also behaved aggressively, the manager told us that there was nothing wrong with having cockroaches everywhere and that if I didn't feel like it I could go, no go they were rude, dangerous and very aggressive.

Poor experience.

A very nicely located hotel with very nice and large rooms, very reasonably priced. The food was good and inexpensive. The rooms facing the church gave you the feel of being amid the activity and action. Just few feet away you have the whole center of town, restaurants and bars and a whole lot of stands selling arts and crafts.
The only downside, no AC in the place, only an oscillating fan.

Average bed, average shower, quiet, great location on the square., a very walkable , interesting city . Beware the ODD owner who demanded I leave my key at the desk everytime i left???  Very strange anywhere.

Average hotel, grumpy owner

GREAT  location - RIGHT on the Zocalo (which is really lively into the night - be aware).  Charming, old style hotel.  We had a room on the second floor with a balcony facing the square - lovely beamed, high ceilings; good airflow with the french doors open; nice shower with plenty of hot water; good mattresses.  Very comfortable.  The hotel is arranged around a covered courtyard where, if you are lucky, a Guelaguetzl (folk dancing) performance is staged (it's free for hotel guests and you shouldn't miss it it's on while you are there). There is a restaurant with really economical daily menus - the markets are SO CLOSE, literally right around the corner, that we mostly ate there.   Better service than one might expect at this price - young men at the desk carried our luggage up, down and to the taxi stand for the airport and they arranged for a taxi for a day.  Only the owner speaks English, but they are all professionals who can practically guess what you need. Recommend the Hotel Monte Alban without reservation and will stay there next time we visit Oaxaca

INCREDIBLE VALUE

Walked to Hotel Monte Alban, on the square, and checked in. The receptionist did not speak English, but we conversed by Goggle Translate. We had a large room on the second floor. Double balcony doors opened to the square. Two comfortable queen beds. Table and chair for writing, but no lamp. In-room safe available, although small, and the bellman watched to see that you were operating it correctly and thus saw your combination. Large shower with hot water. Toilet area was very restricted. Wall mounted fan available, no AC. Since there were no screens on the windows or balcony doors we did have mosquitoes in the room. Dining available in the downstairs courtyard. Economically priced and great location. Would use this hotel if and when we return to Oaxaca.

Great Hotel and Great Location

For what you pay, this was a great hotel to stay at.  It is steps away from the Zocalo.  Zocalo is the central plaza in Oaxaca, that has fine restaurants, a big church, weekend market, numerous types of stores; basically the center of activity.  From here it is easy to visit the colonial part of Oaxaca, take trips to Monte Alban etc.    The hotel is a converted colonial house, with a big courtyard in the middle and rooms along the walls with balconies on all four sides.  Lots of locals were seen living here.  The room was a good size with a King bed and semi-good bed linens.  The room had a safe and the bathroom had a shower with hot water.  Hotel seemed pretty safe, with a good front desk person.   The restaurant serves good food with good service.   the taxi cannot stop in front of the hotel, as it is in a pedestrian only zone.  So, you may have to walk half a block to get into the hotel.   For the price you pay, it was a good bargain and the location made it even better stay.

Zocalo Location, Shoppig, Good Restaurant and Cheap Prices

me and  my wife stayed here  last week for 4 nites and loved everything about this hotel, location is perfect , walking distance to everything, room was very clean, we always had hot water  ,  the staff was very friendly , we had  the honor to meet and  talked to the owner  , she is a very sweet and  nice person we could tell her main priority are her  customers satisfaction, our room was #14 we had  the Cathedral view, we are making this our hotel  for  future visits to Oaxaca.

Very pleased with us staying at this Hotel,very Beautiful clean room, wonderful nice people. They made our stay a Great experiene and we will definitely visit Oaxaca Mexico again soon and will be staying at Hotel Monte Albán. The front desk crew, including the owner of this Hotel has Awesome customer service. We recommend this place for your stay in Oaxaca. 10+ stars forsure!
