We rented a room for 3 for 4 nights during Oaxaca peak season. The first room we got was quite sunny, in the inner courtyard of the building. It was a little uninspiring in terms of cleanliness, but it was still ok. On the first night, I got an electrical shock from the lamp they had provided. My husband went downstairs to complain, very upset after the scare we got, but nothing was done for the remaining time. On the fourth night, we got back to our room to find out that we had no toilet papers, no soap and we were missing towels) The person in charge at night was quite helpful to provide these items. However, we then also found out that they had removed the water pomp for the section of the hotel where we were, while we still had one more night to go. The person in charge thus provided us with an alternative room, the only one left. We had debated whether staying an extra night, considering the bother of moving out and finding another hotel for the 5th night. However, the last room was very humid with a fungal smell, and noisy. Of course, I'm allergic to fungal spores, to add to the bad luck. I would not recommend staying there, as you can not guaranty in which room you can stay, and the cleanliness is not great. It is a pity, because they have a nice and simple restaurant, with very affordable prices, and they have a very central position that they could have turn into an asset. The prices for the rooms are high enough during peak season to expect a better service.

Not good enough, for many reasons listed below

This hotel has good private rooms with private bathrooms. Definitely European sized, but excellent. The restaurant in the lobby serves food all day and has an excellent fixed price breakfast not to be missed if you dig authentic local food. 

The hotel staff is very helpful and accommodating. They will help you with anything you need. 

Great place to stay

This hotel has a old style comfy courtyard, which is also a restaurant and cafe. The food is basic and value for money and actually quite nice little snacks Mexican style. There are some comfy chairs and couches and books to read plus they also hold a weekly bridge club, I also noticed local Oaxacans eating there.
The rooms are very clean we were upstairs and had a lovely balcony. the day time it is quiet although at night, like many of the old town hotels, there is noise and music from local bars. The receptionist Elizabeth was so helpful and she spoke perfect English. This Hotel is the heart of Oaxaca and it was a lot cheaper than many of the other central hotels.

The location form the hotel is excellent but the employees are disrespectful! Plus we agreed on a price and when we arrived, they increased the price 15%. The hotel is also dirty with cockroaches (big ones and small ones) and ants. I posted a photo of the big cockroach so they know it is not a lie. And there was no warm water! We changed to another hotel to keep enjoying our holidays.

Worst hotel ever!

La Casa de la Tia has a great location.  Since it was Dia de los Muertos, it was the only hotel with a room left near the Zocalo - so we took it.  The people who work there are very friendly - really helpful.  They have a restaurant also and their prices are okay.  The hotel has an interior courtyard which is a great place to relax, or do email.  
The only criticism I have of the hotel has to do with the bedding.  The beds in our room, (we had the 'triple' room, with a loft, and had 4 beds), were awful.  It wasn't so much the hard mattresses, but the bedding.  Each bed had two sheets and two pillow cases that were very warn and very grey.  Bleach is cheap, and it helps sanitize.  If they can't afford to buy sheets, at least wash the old ones correctly.  Also, the only blanket provided was the bedspread, which had not been washed in who knows how long - a long time.  I don't have much problem with allergies, but I became congested in the room from the mustiness.  I guess it was from the pillows or mattress.  There was a certain smell, the kind you smell in small museums in small towns full of old cloth.  The dust, (or is it dust mites?) made me congested.
I'm really not a priss - really.  I didn't even mind the small cockroaches I saw in the bathroom.  I figured it meant they weren't over spraying with insecticide - which is a good thing.  But, every night I took the dirty bed spread off the bed and had to use my jacket to keep warm, and airline pillow to get away from their pillows.
They need to fix this problem, and if they can't, they should at least wash the bedding properly!
