We spent a good day in Nopala. A quick taxi ride from the Terminal Turistica on Tangolundo Avenue just north of the mercado in Pto Escondido was 300 pesos for 4 people. Market day is early on Sunday so we left at 7am and arrived about 8:30.

There was some weaving and basketry but the food stalls were good as was the canteloupe juice refresher. The historic church was being re-floored by, it appeared, volunteers.  The newer version beside it with the bell tower was rung by hand by a fellow right up in the tower. Must be tough on the ears!

The hotel restaurant opens at 3pm on Sunday and in the meanwhile Moctezuma Zurita of the Hotel Palacio Chatino arranged for two tuk-tuks to tour us around the surrounding areas.

Notable is the statue of the three Kings and what that signifies for the town. The river tour demonstrated how difficult life can be in Mexico as men were seen mining for river sand and gravel and buildiing stones; illegal but tolerated. One of the drivers had good English saving us from our Spanish struggles. About an hour tour for 70P . . . well worth it.

The hotel has several clean and spartan rooms if you want overnight. If not the hotel sells organic coffee to bring home. Stop by for a cerveza and say hi to "Monty" who represents the Cultural and Tourist Association of Santo Reyes Nopala. 

At an elevation of a little over 2000 metres the air at Nopala is cool and dry. If your looking for a break from the beach and the humidity of the coast give Nopala a try.

Basically the only hotel in Nopala, it is nice honestly. Quaint town and nice courtyard and restaurant at courtyard with drinks, snacks, etc. Decent rooms for what you get. Enjoyable nonetheless. Don't expect luxury :)

You get what you get

I visited Nopala for three days to see traditional Day of the Dead ceremonies.  Mission successful.

I stayed at Hotel Palacio Chatino.  The room and hotel were clean and well maintained.  The receptionist was helpful knowledgeable and recommended cool places to visit in the surrounding communities.  There is a small restaurant next to the lobby that served decent meals at a fair price.  The hotel is conveniently located.

I stayed in room 206 which over looked the church  and church yard and had a great view of the mountains.  Great view.  There is a place across the street that sells music cds.  If you are really sensitive to noise, this room might not be for you but otherwise I recommend to get the room if it is available.

The room was 300 pesos, for an economical hotel this place was a bargain and very clean.  I will be staying there again soon and already have my room reserved.
