Magical resort with astonishing views 

Amazing how a vision, creativity and love for beauty can turn a dry mountain hill into a paradise oasis. Amazing, stylish and cozy spas, big swimming pool, flowering trees, bushes, colourful birds, pyramids, decorated with ancient civilizations attributes and symbols, sculptures, lights and quality craftsmanship in big and small details, make you feel like you are in fairy tail land.

I’d read some questionable reviews about Monte Coxala, but  our experience was excellent. The check in time was a little long, but the views were beautiful and the Agua Fresca delicious. Our room was nice, and the view was gorgeous. We had margaritas by the pool, and enjoyed the views and the chairs in the water. Dinner was so delicious, we loved the fried veggies and squid, and the lemon pasta and we had had a crisp, cold 
Pinot Grigio. When it got a little windy, the waiters brought out heated wraps. Service was great and the prices reasonable. Our spa treatment (exfoliation and massage) were heavenly....one of the best massages I’ve had while living in Mexico. We left totally zen!!
I will definitely go back....soon!!

Get your Zen on in this magical place....

I have been to mountainside thermal spring spas in Colorado, USA and Ischia, Italy that were incredible. I think this one beats them all for the views and are similar for the relaxation in the thermal pools.

The authentic Mayan theme was consistent and it was hard to know what was man-made, it looked so authentic and truly old. When entering inside the back of a giant head into a hot tub, I was shocked to see a passage to an under round/under the pyramid Olympic sized thermal water pool!  It was perfect as it was too cold to swim in the infinity outdoor pool. It was deep enough to swim laps, but soon became too warm. A great place to stretch or float on your back for awhile.

We were there on a Wednesday in mid December and there were only about 12 people using the thermal pools. We were the only English-speaking couple there. It was extremely private we never shared a pool even once.

The restaurant had fabulous food and again really amazing views, best on the lake being up so high. Fernando, our waiter, had lived in the USA several times and spoke perfect English and took amazing care of us.

We had a great couples Swedish massage, in a modern room with windows looking out at the view. The prices were very reasonable compared to the USA or even spa prices in other developing countries.

The only reasons I am not giving it a 5 star rating are the following:
1. The website does NOT do it justice, it's hard to get information on how the entrance fee works and the various packages and options. With some marketing help it would be busy year round. 
2. It's hard to find. There are two security gates that you need to drive to, to get to it and that could be off-putting for some visitors that don't know you can just talk with the security guards and give a small tip to get in.
3. For first time visitors that don't speak Spanish it can be a bit disorienting as it's so large. It's a lot to take in and find your way around. I speak ok Spanish and was able to ask for directions and clarifications. It would have been nice to be given a mini tour/orientation as we weren't really sure where we were to go to get our towels and robes, where to meet for the massage and where we were allowed to go and where we were not.
4. There was maintenance and renovations underway, so not all pools were open. 5. The grounds were beautiful and well kept, but I would not say they were immaculate.
6. The staff was kind and helpful IF YOU ASKED. They did not go out of their way to welcome you or ask if you need anything and most didn't speak any English.
7. It seemed to be a spa tailored for Mexican tourists or maybe locals more than the general public.
8. If you are elderly or unable to walk up and down stone steps or long distances it would be difficult to enjoy most of the outdoor pools.

Most in Ajijic and Chapala believe there is only one spa in San Juan Cosala the one with the biggest sign just off the main road. There are 6-8 we found out and this one is by far the best!

Had an incredible day and would definitely go back. I do not think the negative reviews on this site are fair or accurate. In fact, I wonder if they are fake from the nearby competitors. We took a tour of one of them ON the lake and it was fine, but we weren't interested in a tile bathtub filled with red wine, oatmeal or cider vinegar. We prefer the natural thermal waters with incredible views.

Mountainside Vista Luxury Spa

Came with some relatives on a Monday, best day to come if you want to relax! Amazing place, breathtaking views, thermal pools are AMAZING, Infinity pool is out of this world! Food is really good and restaurant service is ok but food is great! I got a massage and it was GREAT!!!! 
Here are a few things they missed:
1-We walked to the infinity pool and the bar there was closed so they told us they will send us someone from the bar at the restaurant so we could order some drinks... 20 min passed and nobody showed up so we had to walk to the restaurant which is uphill to tell someone to come down and get our order... Bar Service is bad if you are at any pool and the pool bar is closed but is great if you are at the palapa restaurant!
2-This is a 5 star place so I figured that the spa will provide shampoo, conditioner and soap as many spas and 5 start hotels around the world do but nothing was available when taking a shower besides a regular liquid soap, same one you use after using the bathroom... 
3- after realizing there was no “shower necessary items” I was trying to take a shower and the water run out!!!! So I wasn’t able to take a shower after all!!! 
To summarize, I gave a 4 star rate to this place for the lack of service on some areas but in general, installations are beautiful and views are breathtaking!



Beautiful place but....

There is no cold water at all. The shower is impossible as it is just hot water. There is no AC, there is a fan in the room and thats it.
They are announced as a no children facility, there are a lot of children. 
It is too expensive for what they offer.

Not what they promised

What a mixed bag of experiences. Four of us bought a day pass for the pools and spent about 6 hours on site. The 2 staff who greeted us at reception were cold, uninterested in helping us and gave minimal information. The staff person who gave us a golf cart ride from resort reception to the spa reception was friendly enough. She and the restaurant manager (not the servers) were friendly and engaging and helpful. The spa reception staff repeated the cold service, both on arrival and on departure.

On the other hand, the grounds are gorgeous, the pools are stunning, and the restaurant food was good. We spent most of our time going back and forth between the lower hot pool and the infinity pool. We had delicious bar snacks and drinks while at the latter.

To top it all off, they neglected to return our credit card (and yes, we neglected to notice), which we didn't discover until our return to the US which meant the card had to be cancelled.

While floating in the pool I was fantasizing about staying there for a week vacation, but in retrospect, I don't know that I want to stay somewhere that staff are cold and uninviting no matter how nice the pools.

Incredible pools, good restaurant, terrible reception and spa staff

I’ve given this two stars in large part due to the lack of kitchen equipment.  If that isn’t important to you, I’d give it three stars.  Our problem was that for $425 USD per night, we expected so much better.

Pros:
 - Grounds are beautiful
 - Unit was as lovely in the pictures & the view was great
 - Pool service was good – though there were no gluten free options for lunch

Cons:
 - Our penthouse unit was advertised as a “fully equipped kitchen”.  We came thinking that meant we would be able to cook and eat in the unit.  Which we ultimately did, but not without challenges.  Here are the things gone wrong or basic equipment missing:
   - There were no: Hot pads, kitchen towels, dish soap, coffee filters, measuring cups or spoons.
   - The only pots/pans were two small frying pans and a medium sized Dutch oven.  There was no pasta pot, no cookie sheets, and no broiler pan.
   - The oven wouldn’t light.  The microwave didn’t work.  The nice big gourmet style double door refrigerator was marked with a sign saying “not working”.  They had put a smaller fridge next to it that was barely large enough for the food we brought for the 4 days we stayed there.
   - The kitchen garbage can was broken.  We asked for it to be emptied mid week – which they did but then they had no additional garbage bags to line it with.  We used some old gift bags for the kitchen trash after that.
   - No basics like salt, pepper, or oil.  There was instant coffee and tea, but no pot to heat water.
  - There was limited cutlery.  No steak knives, and only two place setting type knives.  The one kitchen knife was horribly dull and the tip was cut off (see photo).  There was no paring knife.
  - There were limited kitchen tools and no wine bottle opener, and no spatula.

The unit itself also had the following issues:
  - The air conditioning did not work.  The unit got to about 90 degrees in the late afternoon.  The front desk staff tried to tell us that it worked for the prior guest.  But the maintenance crew didn’t even bother to try and fix it – they showed up and just shook their heads.  We happen to be familiar with the particular unit that was installed and we know that its no longer serviceable.
  - The wood tables are gorgeous, but there are no coasters to prevent you from damaging them with cold drinks.
  - The hot tub on the deck was empty and clearly had been for months.  They take days to heat, so no point in even trying to fill it.
  - We went to the restaurant about 4pm.  Got our drinks and appetizers.  But after waiting another 30 minutes, there was no wait staff at all in the restaurant.  We finally gave up on the main dishes we had ordered and went to the register to pay – to find the waiter asleep behind the desk.
  - The shower smelled like rotten eggs when we started it.  This happens when the water goes bad from not being used.  The cleaning staff should run all the taps to ensure the water stays fresh.  Someone had put a drain seal / cover over the shower drain.  So the first shower we flooded the place.  The reason for the cover is that when the traps dry out (because you don’t run the water through them often enough) they allow sewage gas up through them.  The covers should be removed before the unit is occupied.
  - We were eaten by mosquitoes – my face is covered in bites.  We found three scorpions over the course of 4 days.  We live in Mexico – so we are accustomed to bugs.  But for what we paid, we would have expected them to have sprayed for bugs, or at least to have warned us not to walk across the unit in the dark for fear of stepping on one.
