I chose 'couples' but none of those categories apply; I travelled with my adult daughter. 

We spent 3 nights at La Catrina and were very satisfied with every aspect of the hostel.  We'd both been in a rural San Miguel home for almost three months and wanted to have a few days/evenings in Centro.  $50 Canadian per night for both of us, including taxes, a breakfast of coffee/tea, cereal and toast/jam.  I bought juice from the kitchen at a regular grocery store price.  The room was immaculate, twin beds, great mattresses and pillows, good supply of hot water.  The whole facility was clean and well maintained.  I opted for the communal shower simply for more space and a better shower head but the one in our room certainly was adequate.  

Location was ideal, 10-15 minute walk to our favourite Centro haunts, good restaurants near-by...one really great Italian restaurant a block away from the hostel (Andrea's).  As an 80-yr-old traveller I would have no reason to choose a high-end hotel when there are places like La Catrina available!  

All positive, for a mother/daughter 80-60/yr-olds' experience.

Clean. Cordial. Civilized. No Drama. The roof top terrace is a great place to work or to have a meeting or simply take in the marvelous view of the city. There is a life in the streets and there is another life on the roofs.  People can see each other and interact high above street level. It was amazing.

This place is great. The staff is numerous and efficient. The place runs like a well oiled machine. 

The continental breakfast if fine and the menu of additional breakfast items is fantastic. One can of course buy food and store it in the kitchen and use the kitchen as needed after 8AM. 
The internet service is adequate throughout the lodging, however I had issues with my Skype calls, even when I was relatively close to the modem on the entry level. If you work online with voice to voice communication as I do, ask reception about a second internet service. 

I stayed in a 4 bed female dorm room. There are not chairs, beds or mirrors in the dorm, but there were two windows equipped with insect screens. Housekeepers entered daily to sweep, mop, open the windows and empty the trash cans.

The bathrooms were adequate, but during my short stay I never had hot water for a shower at night. I am not sure it that was due to the month, January 2022 or the time of day. No matter. I took care of business at the bathroom sink with soap and (cold) water. lol

I chose La Catrina because it had an excellent rating and over 800 reviews on Booking, Plus the price was right, even though it was different on the La Catrina website, on Booking.com and on Hostel World. Of course you can know the price for sure by booking in advance.

La Catrina Will Keep You Coming Back for More!

Maybe it would be helpfull to explain in their descriptions, that wifi is just usable in the « lobby »! Especially for people who have to work from abroad!

Breakfast was absolutely MINIMALISTIC, jam, butter, coffee and toast, for everything else you had to pay.

Not superb

There is a lot to like about La Catrina hostel. The staff are friendly and helpful and they also speak some English. The location of the hostel is in a quiet area only 5-10min walk from the centre of the town. We also liked that they had beautiful Catrina murals throughout the hostel too. We had a room with a double bed and shared bathroom. There was not a lot of space around the bed, but given the price that was not unexpected. The room was cosy and even came with a tv. There is a DVD library as well that you can use. The inclusive breakfast was basic with toast, cereals and tea/coffee. However you can get additional options for 30 pesos extra. All in all, this stay provided tremendous value and we really enjoyed our time here.

Great Value Stay

Very good location in Centro, 3-4 blocks from the Jardin, 1/2 block from the mercado de artesanias on a quiet street.  Rooms are clean and comfortable.  dormitory or private rooms with or without bathroom are all available.  2 floors, with a nice terrace on the roof. A big common area on the main floor where breakfast is served.  Continental breakfast is free, or you can pay 30 pesos for very good chilaquiles, molletos, pancakes, eggs etc.  The kitchen is available to use any time after breakfast.  The staff is terrific, very friendly, helpful and kind.  We made friends with people from all over the world. 
We ended up staying there for a month!  
There's plenty of inexpensive restaurants around but we often bought groceries at the nearby mercado Ignacio Ramirez and cooked most dinners at "home."  If we weren't going to some event in the evening, we'd stroll through Plaza Civica to the Jardin.  It felt very safe at night.   
We've stayed in a lot of hostels in San Miguel. This is the best one we've found.

Perfect hostel!

I’ve stayed in many hostels all over the world and can honestly say that La Catrina is my new favorite! Great central location that’s an easy walk to many memorable sites in San Miguel de Allende. Beautiful Catrina themed murals. Comfortable rooms, both dorms or private en-suite as you prefer. Several outside terraces to enjoy the views. Free breakfast (cereal, toast and coffee or tea) or you can pay a dollar fifty for freshly made hot breakfast choices including traditional Mexican food such as chilaquiles and molletes or classic favorites such as eggs, pancakes and waffles. But by far the best thing about this hostel is the fabulous staff. Thanks sooo much for the superb service (and the great music playlist) Jaimal, Calaf, Armando, Angel, Rafael, Fernando, and Carolina! (Sorry if I neglected to mention anyone.) You were all beyond awesome!!! Couldn’t recommend this hostel or it’s diligent workers more highly! 

La Catrina—Best Hostel in San Miguel de Allende!!!

I stayed here and just didn't like the vibe. The owner was rude. The place was in a good location near the Mexican artisan market, but I don't like to stay in places where the owner is yelling at someone. Also, the decor inside was nice but outside it didn't fit the historic centro of San MIguel de Allende. It had a lot of bright colors that are not in keeping with the historic residential neighborhood. 

Unfriendly management, bad vibe

This is one of the best hostels I've stayed in, except for the roosters!  Be prepared for an EARLY wake-up call each morning, and to hear them constantly throughout the day.  Even with the windows closed and earplugs in, they were still audible.  Considering how many people need to sleep here, I'm surprised the hostel can't come to some sort of agreement with whoever owns the roosters.

Other than that, this really is a great hostel.  The rooftop decks (yes, there's more than one) are a fantastic place to hang out.  There are a lot of little thoughtful touches that most hostels lack, things like hooks to hang towels and things in the bedrooms and in the bathrooms, a shelf near the bed to put small things (such as a charging phone), etc.

The bed was comfortable and the hostel was clean. The location is great, in a quiet area but a 5-10 minute walk to the heart of San Miguel de Allende.

The only other thing I didn't like, aside from the roosters, was that it didn't seem very social at all.  It was mostly couples or groups staying here, from what I saw, and everyone pretty much kept to themselves.

*This is by far the cheapest hostel I've stayed in while in Mexico and maybe the best. How is that possible?
*Dorm was spacious with locker under the bed and plugs for each bed. Bathrooms were outside of the room, which I always like, and a decent size.
*Location is good.

CONS
*The free breakfast wasn't anything special, but it was free so I shouldn't complain -- especially considering the price of the place. You also have the option of upgrading your breakfast for a small price.

Best deal around

This is by far my favorite hostel!   I liked that everything is clean , people are nice and that it is in the perfect part of town !  I would definitely recommend staying here whether it’s by yourself with friends or with family. I  liked that it had many restrooms , a communal kitchen and delicious food in the mornings , and that overall  everyone was respectful towards me and everybody else .  The staff was great ! I stayed here longer than a week and all I can say is that I would definitely be coming back if I ever come back to San Miguel !
