I have stayed at this hotel since the 1990's when it was the only first-class hotel in town. The restaurant used to be renowned for excellent food. The last time I was there, the hotel is still a good hotel, the rooms are still very clean and it is still quiet. However, the Internet is lobby only, the rooms are small for the money. Basically, it is a good hotel, but overpriced. The restaurant is okay, but limited in its offerings. It is good enough, but overpriced. The waterfall in-between the wings of the hotel is a nice touch and I appreciated that touch of uniqueness. The enclosed parking lot is a big benefit for those who don't want to unload their car every night. I have never had any trouble there. 

Tamazunchale now has two newer hotels, one of which is more reasonably-priced with more amenities on the outskirts of town, the Sierra Huasteca. The other hotel is not so hot, according to friends there, but I have not stayed at either yet. Will do so next trip and report.

Still good hotel, but ...

I stayed in Hotel Tamazunchale for four nights in July of 2002. The hotel was clean and comfortable, and the restaurant was safe for American stomachs. The rooms were clean, air conditioned, and had televisions. The problem I ran into is that my brother and I were forced into a small, one twin-bed room with my mother for two nights because apparently a tour group came in unexpectedly and they somehow had higher preference than we did. Unfortunately, we paid the same amount because they charged on a per-person basis instead of a per-room basis (gringo policy, I'm sure). Also, the rooms are now $65+ per night, and there are other, comparable hotels in Tamazunchale now. They just don't have guarded parking.
