I needed pvt accommodation with internet for some business, and this was perfect overnight, super comfortable and warm twin with great net speed. Jerome at checkin couldn't be friendlier, great tips on area. Some comments note rough around the edges exterior. This is just Chisinau. It's perfectly safe, centrally located. Retro has small stencil signs that wd be hard to see at night, so coordinate your arrival carefully with property: address is correct, apartment entrances are around back, doors to each unit block, 4, 3, then yours, at 2, for #24.

Perfect quick overnight in Chisinau

The staff, Jerome, was extremely rude from the moment I walked in. I asked for wifi so that I can use google translator to communicate with my taxi driver and he refused to share it with me. He then gets in my face and demands I pay the taxi an outrageous price and says "or else you will have problems", threatening me physically. Poor taxi cab driver had to leave without getting paid anything because of the altercation caused by the hostel staff, Jerome. I managed to find the wifi pw on the wall and as I was trying to sit down he literally pushes me off my chair making me fall to the floor and yells at me to get out since I told him I won't be staying there. All this chaos from the moment I walked in. I had just arrived in Moldova with no sim card and can't speak the local language and he wanted me to be stranded outside at 12AM! He literally threw my bags outside. How can a hostel have staff that refuses to share their wifi when a guest has a reservation? How can a hostel have staff that threatens their guests physically and pushes them off the chair because they want to sit down? Jerome needs to get Fired ASAP!!! Do Not stay here unless you want to get in a fight with the staff.

Hostel Staff Will Fight You, Physically! Stay Away!

I called the number that I saw on the website to find out information about the hostel. The woman who answered boorish rare. I did not know the name of the hostel and she answered me: If you don’t know the name of the hostel, then bye bye and put the phone down. The worst service you can meet. I am afraid to imagine how they communicate with foreigners who travellers....

Horrible!! Never, NEVER go There!!!!

The people working in this hostel are incredibly nice. They help you find your way in the city and help you go to other places. Especially Sergio and Christina were a great help. They're also very social which gave the whole atmosphere a friendly vibe and made it really fun. Sergio even tried to teach me some Russian which I really appreciated. This is definitely a place I'll come back to.

Superfriendly!

The place is located in the center of the city. This is a small hostel very clean with friendly staff and close to restaurants. They call a taxi for us in the morning. Far to find the place tho, it is behind the main street.

Bit hard to find it 

Located nicely in the city centre of Chisinau, Retro Hostel is a cheap and friendly place to spend a few nights whilst exploring Chisinau, and even wider Moldova as they offer several day trip package options outside the city as well. We arrived too early to check in, but the staff allowed us to leave our bags whilst we went out to find some food. 

The hostel sells beer, but also allows you to keep your own in the fridge, which adds to its friendly sociable atmosphere in the afternoons. The staff are very friendly during this period, particularly Sergei and Christina, who looked after us the night we stayed and provided a great friendly atmosphere in the common area by socialising with guests as well as simply working. We even took Sergei out for dinner after he finished his shift! They also invited us into the basement, to take a look at the former Soviet nuclear fallout bunker located down there.

There is no air conditioning in the room, which is one of the few downsides as the place gets very hot. The wide bay windows from the rooms to the reception are always open also, which is slightly odd in the night, but not too much of an inconvenience if one uses the lockers provided. The shower is quite good and powerful though, which is rare for a hostel shower. 

Overall, whilst there are flaws, Retro Hostel is a great and friendly place to stay, with a lot of history behind it, and well worth the price.

Friendly and historic hostel

Hostel is located in ground floor of common building and it's easy to get there. Staff are very kind and helpful, but in our case they had outdated information about trip to Tiraspol. Kitchen is fitted with all needed amenites. You have also access to fridge and washing machine. Wifi works very good.

Furniture in rooms looks like might fall apart. Beds are comfortable, but extremely creaky.
